Planting Oriental Poppies and Enjoying Fragrant Wisteria

Posted by F&S

We like to keep the Glue Squad up on all that's going on at the farm.  Spring is such an exciting time and there is a lot happening.  Here's a little of what we found on Friday.

Sharkey, it looks like Ryan is busy planting in the garden.

Francesca, these are Oriental poppies that Ryan grew from seed in the greenhouse.

Oriental poppies are prized for their huge, crepe-petaled blooms in gorgeous pinks, reds, oranges, and even whites.

Hi Ryan! Poppies are perennials that bloom in May and June.

However, these plants don't look big enough to offer any flowers this year.

So the idea is to plant the poppies now so that they can grow big and strong and begin blooming next spring?

I'd say you are a very patient gardener!

But still, it's a great idea anyway because you are filling up empty spaces where weeds could grow instead.

Oriental poppy blossoms last only a week or two, but during that time they furnish one of the high points of the gardening year. You certainly have a lot of plants. Can you imagine how gorgeous this border will be?

Good job, Ryan! Keep up the great work in making this farm so amazing!

You must take a whiff. It's so fragrant!

You're right, Francesca. Did you know that wisteria is in the pea family? There are two forms of wisteria - the climbing vine and the standard upright, like this one. Ahh - I could smell this all day!

  • Hello everyone,
It is amazing to think that not too long ago the farm was all wrapped in burlap and now look at all the color from the plants as they grow. That Ryan, he is really good at what he does. Sooooooo, hope all the Glue Squad moms had a great day and got all kinds of nice things yesterday in honor of Mother's Day because you ladies all deserve nice things. You rock.
    Later,
    Maddox

  • Ooh the Wisteria is simply beautiful!

Photo #11 is my favorite. Almost postcard worthy!

After Spring like temps for the past week, a cool off begins today in NH. Am I aspiring to be a weather-forecaster? :)

Happy Monday to all the G.S. gang...

  • Good Morning F & S

Your farm must be just beautiful this time of year with everything in bloom. Things are looking very pretty at our house as well. I wish this green stuff that is flying through the air would leave it's nasty stuff. Mom said she has to keep the windows closed otherwise we'll have a green film in our house - YUK.

We all had a beautiful weekend. Mom worked in the garden Saturday and yesterday we surprised her with 2 really big hanging baskets with pretty flowers. She went and had a message with her mom and then came home and cooked lobster and steak on the grill. My grandmom was very happy.

Today I don't think I'll venture out until it warms up - a bit nippy out there this morning. The big guys must be freezing their buns off with this chilly weather after just having their summer cuts nothing to keep them warm.

Well I think I'll go snuggle with dad he is still asleep :)

  • Hello Girls & Glue Squad Buddies,
Planting with Ryan sounds great. I have seen Oriental Poppies, but never Wisteria. It looks a lot like Lilacs. Everything is late here in Colorado budding out, due to the late snows. We did some planting over the weekend, but are getting ready for a giant garage sale this weekend. Mom and I are not thrilled. The house is a war zone, the garage and patio. We tried everything we could do to get out of it, but Dad says no go. We thought we could just put a sign out saying, FREE, please take to a good home, but once again, Dad says no go. So.....he is retired now, so he gets to help lots. Due to be in the 80's this week. Must get the swamp cooler going. I do not like heat---have to get out on a walk early before this gal wilts. Hope all you Moms had a great weekend. Everyone cooked up Mom's favs and it was great. Better get going now for a cool walk. Have a GEM of a day.
    Love and licks,
    Ruby

  • Good morning ladies,
Well, once again I learned something new. I did not know that there was an upright wisteria! Mimi may have to buy one now. There is an old house that has very pretty concrete pillars and an arbor sturdy enough for the really big wisteria that grows there. I think it's really old. There is an old picnic table under the arbor. It's so pretty.
We had a real Mother's Day surprise! I have 12 new mallard ducklings! They made their debut yesterday with their proud Mama. They are sooooo cuuuute!
It's nippy outside at our house, too. At least it's sunny.
Hope everybody had a great Mother's Day.
    Til tomorrow
    Your pal,
    Rebel

  • Hello ladies, Kirby here.
What a good weekend we had at our place. It seemed that everyone was lazy and napped again and again all morning long. Daddy has been working on his genealogy for the past few months. I found my papers and was looking at my ancestry too. Boy what a colorful family I have. Mom and Dad were red, that’s why I’m mostly red too. Some ancestors were black, white, tan, and red. And don’t forget those mixes which gave me the black markings at my shoulders. So far Daddy has more than six thousand names going back 19 generations. So far, I can only trace mine back six generations. I’ll bet if I keep looking I could go back to China where Chows started. Before I start looking again, I think a nap is due.
    Catch you later, Kirby.

  • Hi F, S, &GK+ Glue Squad, You two sweet, beautiful girls must have had a great time helping Ryan plant those great oriental poppies! You both looked so cute and happy and I never wear a collar when being in my home or wondering around my yard, either! Mom only puts one on me when I get to take a nice walk with my leash! We did have a wonderful walk on Mother's Day and I didn't bark at anyone! I only bark now to talk to Cora-Belle, our sweetheart! Have another great day and say hi to our buddy, GK! I'll bet you had fun with Martha, Alexis, Jude, and Truman on Mother's Day!!!! Maddox, I agree with you and I hope everyone had a great Mother's Day, too! Gail, sure hope your weather improves! We are to get some rain all week and it's cooler already! Zoe, sure glad your Mom had a great Mother's Day and my Mom did, too! Stay warm! Ruby, Sounds like your Mom had a nice Mother's Day and nice that your Dad is retired! WOW! Getting up to the 80s this week is awesome and hope you stay cool! We will be in the 60s all week! Will check back later to hear from the rest of you! Love, Dudley Do Right XOXOXO+

  • Hope Mother's Day was fulfilling for all...I had a marvelous time with one of my daughters.
I just got back from the Ophthalmologist...my eye glass prescription was way off but it's not what is causing my dizziness...the Optho Dr. said he had never seen such healthy eyes for someone my age...don't really know how to take that, but I was happy.
So now on to the Ear, Nose and Throat doctor...just want to find out if I'm allergic to something, hope it's not Kitty..if so I'll learn to live with it.

Ruby and Kitty Thank You for the sweet handmade Mother's Day card....too sweet...Love You!

My eyes are still dilated so will sign off and wait for it to clear.

    delia and Kitty =^. .^=

  • ..wow..you frenchies are helpers..I help, too, but from a distance..hope all you moms had a nice mom day..Dudley, looks like cooler weather here in the N.w., thank goodness...Kirby, my family tree would impossible to trace since I was dumped off by some uncaring jerks..(best day of my life, though, get to live here at the farm/ranch)..wish we all could go to Rubys garage sale..can you see me and Rebel and Zoe, Kitty, James Dean and Maddox and the rest of my glue squad buddies all getting treasures...we would all eat snacks and act naughty...Lucinda is thinking about pasturing some horses for a friend for the summer..now that would be cool..first have to find out if Ivan and Ivanka from down the road would not chase them and get kicked in the head..we know for sure one naughty cattledog would have...must round up the group and patrol the farm..later, Black Mama p.s. the stupid Chiweenies are still visiting..I will tell you about them tomarrow!

  • Hello to F,S, GK and all my new Glue Squad Friends!
First of all, my Mom had a great Mother's Day. My human brothers and sister brought cards, flowers and most important their love and thanks. Brutus and I, of course, gave her licks and kisses and reminded her all day just how lonely her life would be without us.
As big as brother Brutus is, he is scared of storms and loud noises. Saturday evening we had thunder, lightning and rain. Brutus decided he would spend some alone time in the basement. He couldn't understand why Mom, Dad and I didn't follow. Personally, I'm not going to that basement unless someone carries me! He finally came back up about a hour after the storm blew through. But he stayed close by Mom the rest of the night.
I'm not afraid of anything, except missing dinner! haha
    Pugs and kisses for now!
    Max

  • So nice to see Spring has arrive on the east coast!

Jakey and I are moving, with our humans of course, so we have been busy helping with the packing. We move in offically tomorrow. Our beds are there now so we sort of miss them for a day or so.

  • Hi Girls & Glue Squad Friends, A belated Happy Mother's Day wish to all of you. I sure hope everyone had a terrific day. You girls are certainly very helpful to Ryan;I'm sure he appreciates your opinion when he plants all the flowers. It was a somewhat rainy weekend but finally cleared late yesterday afternoon; now today's temperatures are only in the 50's but it is certainly my kind of weather. Plenty of deck time for me. I've been trying to be good; but there have been moments when Mom has had to go back and remind of my manners. Some days I just can't win :) . Hi to all my buddies, hope everyone is doing well.

    Till next time,
    Missy Chow
    xoxo
