Deadheading Tulips

Posted by F&S

Because we spend so much time in the garden, we Frenchies know the importance of deadheading, the removal of dead or spent flowers.  Depending of the flowering plant, there are different methods of deadheading and today, we will discuss how to deadhead tulips.

Ryan, the tulip flowers on the terrace are spent and it's time to trim them back, don't you think?

I'm sure you know that this type of trimming is called deadheading, where you remove the dead or spent flowers.

It's been our observation that tulips often don't return so strongly the following spring.

One way to encourage strong spring growth is to remove the seed head when the flower has finished.

The best way to grow tulips is, of course, by planting tulip bulbs in autumn.

If the seed pod is allowed to mature, too much energy is drained from the bulb, causing it to become weak.

That's right, Sharkey! We want to do everything possible to keep the bulb strong.

Once the flower stalk is removed, the left over leaves will slowly dry up and as they do, they feed the bulb, giving it energy for next season.

And Ryan, I'm sure you know this too, but when the foliage has dried up, it is easily removed and can join everything else in the compost pile. Growing tulips is just another circle of life!

  • Deadheads? Tulips?

I was half expecting F&S to be jamming to some Grateful Dead tunes! :)

    However, very interesting tutorial!

As the Queen of Hearts from Alice in Wonderland said "Off with their heads" :)

Happy Friday to all the GS and Furries on the Farm!

  • Good morning F,S, GK and all the Glue Squaders!
We certainly hope Martha knows just how valuable you Frenchies are to the smooth-running of her farm. Keep up the good work girls!
Hope everyone is well and/or healing.
    Have a great weekend everyone!!
    Pugs and kisses!

  • Good morning peeps,
Good one Gail, Grateful Dead. I can only imagine the size of the compost pile. Ryan sure is a busy person at the farm. I went back and read all the comments for the week cause I just skimmed over them each day cause we were up and out early working on the new kennel project. But I always go back and see what everyone is up to. I noticed that Zoe is not posting, on vacation again? Also, Molly and Jake. Are they not Glue Squadders anymore?
James Dean and Abby, who or what is your house guest? I bet that was amazing to see the baby fawn and mamma in your yard. Black Mamma, how is James doing? How is Lucinda holding up? I know you will do a good job of taking care of the ranch for a while
So, Brutus and Max had visiting kids with squirt guns recently. That was very nice that they didn't aim for you guys. Kitty, did Delia meet your new BFF yet?

Missy Chow, is it your dad who is making bird condos? Stay out from under them. You don't want bird poo on your head. Yuk. Kirby, is your computer better? You should tell your dad that you are a VIP in the Glue Squad and he might have to change servers so you don't have trouble anymore. Rebel, sawing wood means you did something nice for Mimi. You made a nice steady loud noise that was very soothing for her to hear, just do it louder next time. She will enjoy that. Hehehehehehehe. Martha, Riley and Lucy go to the groomer. You always feel better when it is over, right? Dudley, I read you went on 5 walks. Was that all in one day? You are a little guy. Tell them to get you a skateboard so you don't get worn out. Sonya. baby Favor, Gail and the rest of you have a great weekend. Over the weekend try to think of a way to help Ruby. Lynn is listening to music that hurts Ruby's ears. Frank Sinatra, perry Como to mention a few. I never heard of these people but Karen said poor Ruby should not have to hear it, not at all. So, lets help Ruby. Maybe if we all tell Lynn to either get different people to listen to or turn it off when poor Ruby is around, maybe that will work.
    Love to all,
    Maddox

  • Good Morning F & S and all my Glue Squad Buddies !!

My mom HATES to deadhead, she tries to buy flowers that require no maintenance. Maybe that is a job I could do for her I could go around and chew off the tops of all the flowers - NOT!! Unless there is a little TP hanging around ;)

Maddox I'm not on vacation I was home all week but mom worked some crazy hours. In her business the end of the month is really busy and the improvement with the housing market means lots of closings taking place.

So I have to tell all about the best present I ever got in my life. Ruby and Lynn sent me a Martha Stewart bed that belonged to my boyfriend Basil. It's beautiful!! Sophie thinks it's her bed so I had to set her straight. Big fight last night because she wouldn't get out and I wanted in. I lay there and dream of my Prince and can feel his Frenchie paws stroking my big beautiful ears. Ahhh it's heaven. I can't thank them enough :)

Mom got out my misting bottle last night. I guess that means the hot and humids will be around this weekend. I love my cold spritz as I lay on the deck.

Oh I almost forgot - CONGRATULATIONS GK !! Way to go!!! The next time you have a show in NJ mom and I are taking a road trip. I would love to meet you :)

Have a great weekend everyone - stay cool!!

  • Hello Girls & Glue Squad Buddies,
Helping Ryan deadhead things, is very good information. I will make sure that Mom does this in her flower bed. Things are slow in the flower garden, but coming along. Not blossoming like you girls get to see. Yep, Karen is correct, now that Mom is getting stronger with the "pain in the neck" problem, she is beginning to work on her cards more. She is still going to therapy, 2 hours each session, twice a week, but more and more neck strengthening at home. I know I am a snow girl, but Christmas music in the summer, what is going on? Mom says the old guys and their music motivate her. So...I proceeded to distract myself from the music and got into Weston's turtle filters. He is so good to me, I don't know what came over me. They were under the 200 gallon tank, as spares, but smelled really good and I chewed one up and then left the scene of the crime. I should have taken it to one of the landscape jobs and left it, but just didn't think and was caught in the act. Weston wasn't mad, but I heard him say, "why do all the dogs chew up my stuff?" What can I say, he has the best stuff. What are everyones plans for the weekend? I am beginning BIG party planning. You see Weston's birthday is the 5th and his closing on the house, might be then too. A big, big, big, celebration. I hear his house will need lots of work and love, so at least it will be slow his leaving. The old folks were in bed already last night and I was up with him and butt vrooming to beat the band. Down the road he might get me a puppy that will live with him, but be my friend too. That would be nice. I am glad Baby Favor's friend, Lentil, made it through surgery and is recovering well. I hope everyone has warm weather and a GEM of a weekend.
    Love and licks,
    Ruby

  • Aha! I thought I saw you two tiptoeing through the tulips, and I was right! Thanks for your instructional blog, girls. You rock (but not on the tulips...).

    Bye,
    Malcolm

  • Hello ladies, Kirby here.
I guess I will have to read a little slower when I read your postings. At first I thought you said bedheading instead of deadheading. I just couldn’t see anyone sleeping when you were cutting the dead flowers off. I could be called a bed head at times because I sleep so much. Maddox, I want to thank you for your comment. I am a VIP (very important pup) around here in my neighborhood.; don’t know about elsewhere. It’s the weekend already. Have a good, and safe, weekend all.
    Catch you later, Kirby

  • Hi F,S,&GK+ Glue Squad, Sweet Francesca and Sharkey you did a marvelous job helping Ryan deadheading those great tulips at Martha's farm! I love learning new things and will tell Mom how to fix her flowers, too! Sure hope you beautiful girls and everyone at the farm have a great weekend and say Hi to handsome GK! Sure hope all of you Glue Squaders are doing well and that you weather is getting better! We are supposed to get sunshine more often starting next week and I will get to take many more walks with Mom! Sure hope Delia, James, and Lentil are doing better real soon! I will read all of your new comments a bit later and should have more time to comment to all of you buddies! Hope your weekend is great! Love, Dudley Do Right XOXOXO+

  • Good morning ladies & Ryan,
So, that's what happened to Mimi's tulips! She never deadheads them and (we have a really small bed) 3 of the white ones didn't grow this year. We'll have to do that between storms this weekend. We still have a few flowers to plant, too.
Ruby, we're glad to know that you Mom is doing better. Hoping the same for James, Delia & Lentil, too.
Quiet weekend at our house. Have a good one everybody.
    Your pal,
    Rebel

  • Francesca Baby, thank you for the lesson! Mom has never been quite sure what to do with her bulb flowers to make them stronger, so this year she will try deadheading them the RIGHT way ;) We have finally gotten nice enough weather to spend time outside which makes us all happy, except it makes Mom sneeze because of her allergies. Roxy and I say hello to all the people walking by on their way to the park across the street. I hope the weather is nice this weekend AND that Dad maybe can take a day off, that would be fun. I hope everyone has a fantastic weekend.
    A bientot!

  • I'm with Gail, I immediately thought of the the Grateful Dead and thought maybe you all were prepping for a deadhead party in the garden. I hope everyone is doing better.

The weather has been warm but rainy but temps are going to drop back to the 60's again by late weekend. Everyone have a lovely weekend.

  • Afternoon Girls & Glue Squad, It's nice to know to deadhead the tulips, all of Mom's have stopped blooming and now she knows to make the bulbs stronger. We always learn something new each day. Well, it was a busy morning and no early computer time for me. Mom had an appointment then food shopping, she got everything in the house without my help and I didn't even hear her come in. What's up with that? I couldn't check the bags. Ruby, don't feel bad what you found in Weston's room; I've been caught in action this week with things I shouldn't have either. Must be something in the air, hehe..Maddox, no it wasn't my dad, it was Ruby's dad who built the bird condo's; but thanks for the info on the bird poo... birds are always flying around my backyard. Black Mama, hope James & Lucinda are doing okay. Temps today in the high 90's with humidity, too hot & sticky for me. Hope all my friends are doing well and looking forward to a fun weekend.

    Till next time,
    Missy Chow
    xoxo

  • ..you Frenchies are so busy..me and my tribe are taking over Cora-Belles duties..keeping the raccoons in line and greeting Ivan and Ivanka when they come down the diveway or thur the woods..they are not chasing us near as much as they used too..some nights they sleep on our porch..of course we tell their people where they are at..funny guys!..think they know Lucinda and James miss you know who!..James is doing better..no ugly side effects...two does in the field..I better get out there and spy on them..all my glue squad buddies have a safe week-end..over and out, love, Black Mama p.s.,..goofy Lucinda had the sweater vest dry cleaned..just in case another doggie may need use of it...
