Why Does This Flower Smell so Badly?

Posted by F&S

When we were in the greenhouse looking at the onion plants and potatoes, another very unusual plant caught our eye and our nose, too.  Now, we Frenchies love flowers, but this may be one exception.

Sharkey, wake up from your nap! There's a really unusual plant to see.

Francesca, it's really not hard to wake up from a nap with this thing around.

This is the strange flower of Amorphophallus 'Rivieri'.

This plant is also known as the Voodoo Lily, Devil's Tongue, Snake Plant, and the Corpse Flower. It has a horrible odor, reminiscent of a decomposing mammal!

Sharkey, I see you've had enough of its stink, but I'll be brave and have a little whiff.

Phew! It sure does stink!

I've heard that there's a much larger version of this flower called Amorphophallus 'titanum' and when that thing blooms, one can actually get ill from smelling it.

If we must have this plant, I think we should stick to this size.

  • Thanks for telling us about this unusual plant, you two. Love your blog!

  • Hello all,
I must say, this one has me baffled. I cannot understand why Martha would have a flower like this on her property. Ryan must have to wear a mask when he takes care of this plant if it smells that bad. Yuk. I wonder where those real big ones grow that make people sick. It seems like there is no purpose for this plant. Is it used in medicine? I was thinking and thinking and the only thing I came up with is that this plant is brought out when a person is trying to get rid of guests that just don't want to leave. You know, we all have friends or relatives like that. When they come for a visit you make sure you have them sit in the area that is closest to the plant. And then you set a timer to see how long it takes for them to vacate the premises. So girls, where can I get one of these plants? Hehehrhehehehehe.
    Love to all,
    Maddox

  • Good Morning F & S

I might get one of those stinky plants and keep it in our family room so next time I pass a little gas I can blame the plant ;) Let me ask why would anyone want a plant that stinks???

Hey can someone tell me when Spring is going to show up? I froze my butt off yesterday and what's up with this snow and rain - really???

I'm going back to bed, ate my breakfast and it's another cold dreary day :(

    Zoe

  • Good morning ladies,
Well, I just don't know about this plant. I thought marigolds were bad.
I must say that I did think of our you, Zoe. Your little stinkers wouldn't even be noticed!
It's a freezing-my-butt off today, too. I'm getting tired of having to hurry my outside time 'cause of the cold!
    Have a great day all.
    Your pal,
    Rebel
Oh,oh...who's birthday is on Friday? Look it up!

  • Hello ladies, Kirby here.
I’ll bet that plant is used in the garden to attract skunks. This will keep them in one place and the rest of the garden will smell clean and fresh. Maddox, when I think too hard I often get a short between the ears. When that happens, I just take a nap and things will be better when I wake up. Speaking of naps; better take one before the morning is over.
    Catch you later, Kirby.

  • Hello Girls & Glue Squad Buddies,
I am back on track today with getting my regular computer time. A stink plant heh, well I think it is the home for stink bugs. We have a lot of those here, especially in Fall I here. If I get one of those plants, then if I see a bug, I can just move him there.

I wish we would get some of the rain you are getting Zoe. Said that we are going to be on water rationing this summer. That can't be good. Tomorrow is the first day of Spring isn't it? I should have Springfest I think. Mom is shopping today for my you know what party. Since it is going to be my first and second birthday party we are spreading it over the weekend, and I get 2 cakes, 2 hats, and I am hoping 2 presents. Do you think???? The only thing I haven't been too good about is rolling lots in the dry grass. A girl is just born to roll you know. Well off to grass central, and I hope everyone has a GEM of a day.
    Love and licks,
    Ruby

  • Hello F,S & GK - what a cool plant (even though it is stinky to humans it might smell alright to all us canines). Our superior noses might make the smell quite nice to us, just think of all the times we find something dead somewhere and just have to roll in/on it to get the smell on us. Perhaps you guys have it all wrong!
Well we are back, had a bit of a time out, Mom was off and had a million things to do, doesn't leave us much time for commenting. Riley boy got into something he shouldn't have - he ate some chocolate that was unattended - did I tell you he is a countersurfer extroardinare? What a guy, he snarfled it down so fast and what happened - OMG he was not a happy camper later on - pooping through the eye of a needle - AND Dad and Mom had to give him two baths because it was everywhere on him and he was stinky - probably about as stinky as the flower in today's blog. Ah well, good thing he likes baths and will sit down and be washed.
All of us are thinking good thoughts to send to Precious, its not nice when a buddy is sick, especially when they can't tell you exactly what is wrong. Hopefully the vet can give some medicine, you can take pills in these great things called pill pockets - they are yummy - did I tell you that Riley loves food, ALL food, but especially food he shouldn't have like cat food, snacks and whatever else may come his way. Also, Rebel's reminder about Friday ....... I think it is Miss Ruby Tuesday .... going to be 2! A party for the party planner is in order for sure. Have cake and ice cream and pizza.
Well gotta go, Mom needs to get back on the computer. Love to you all, Lucy (writing), Martha and Riley (devil dog).

  • I agree with Zoe. Bring that plant near me when I have gas and I can blame it on the plant! Perfect idea!

My human said he might use it around his feet. Someones they are odorific!!

    Molly

  • hello Francesca, Sharkey, Angela, Riley, maddox, Kitty and all my glue squad buddies,
So Franny, a real Voodoo Lily???? What can the purpose be?? Sharkey, could you really nap near one?? Sounds so odorific, maybe a house warming gift for a bad neighbor sent anonymously of course....
Maddox, you really are too funny. Zoe, I sincerely hope Precious feels better soon! Ruby Tuesday, get ready for your rocking birthday on Friday girlfriend!! Hope Lynner feels better too!
We have yucko rain and snow again, several inches so Mom stayed over at the animal hospital last night. The beagle and cats really liked it, Abby not so much. Riley, be careful of that nasty chocolate. Kitty, hope you are home safe and dry. Dudley, hope you are having a great day. Maddox, feel better Professor. Kirby, your spring hair coat will be here soon. Zoe, we saw robins in our yard yesterday so SPRING is coming!! Welcome Angela to the DW!!
Parting is such sweet sorrow- James Byron Dean

  • ...I agree, who wants one of those nasty plants?..first off, Hope Precious is feeling better, I will act naughty for you..and Lynn, hope you are doing better...west wind blowing..time to load up and go beach combing..big glass floats roll in this kind of weather..James being an old salt( retired commercial fishermen..king crabber in Alaska in the 60's thur 80's)loves the water.. and beach combing...and we can take the truck on the beach and look for stuff from the comfort of the Tundra...so that means mochas and maple bars..yippee!!!!love, Cora-Belle
