What do you Know About Growing Onions and Potatoes?

Posted by F&S

We Frenchies wandered down to the greenhouse to check on the progress of all the seedlings.  We were very happy with what we saw.  The plants are growing so well.  While we were there, a package arrived for Ryan and, of course, we became extremely interested in its contents.

Franny, look at this package that arrived for Ryan. The box says it's Soup Supreme, but why would he need soup in the greenhouse?

I'll just open the box and get to the bottom of this. Franny, I get a strong whiff of onions. Do you suppose it's onion soup?

The invoice says it's from a company called Irish Eyes Garden Seeds. I guess they just recycled the soup box. I wonder what they sent?

Sharkey, this bag says it contains Ailsa Craig onion transplants.

Well that explains why the box smells like onions.

And here's a bag of Walla Walla onion transplants.

I recall hearing Ryan say that the very best way to get a head start on bulb onions' long growing season is to begin with pre-started plants.

I suppose you just pop these into the ground and watch them grow. How exciting!

And what have we here? Potatoes!

Sharkey, to plant a potato, you cut it up, making sure that each piece has a little eye. The eyes get planted and each one forms a potato plant with many, many potatoes that grow beneath the soil. I can't wait for all of this to happen!

  • Hello ladies,
I didn't know there were so many kinds of potatoes. I wonder if they all have a different taste. Hmmm. Love the last picture of you girls behind the bags. It looks like Ryan is going to be very busy. I have to go back and read all the posts from Friday a little later today. I am feeling a little sluggish today. I think I had one too many biscuits over the weekend. It was a biscuit free for all. I think when Katen goes to a dog show again, she better put someone else in charge of the biscuits. NOT. Hehehehehehe
    Love to all,
    Maddox

  • Let the planting begin!
I bet you gals will be helping to dig the holes, am I right? We've seen you handle the garden trowels. I like the smell of onions, too. We have a mound of chives that smells really good.
I'm still bushed from last week when I had to be at the office all day and then the grandchildren came & played on Saturday night and all day Sunday.
It's dark & rainy today, just right for catching some zzzzzz's.
    Have a great day all.
    Your pal,
    Rebel

  • Hello Francesca, Sharkey,Maddox, Ruby and all my glue squad buddies,
What fun seeing you girls inspecting the onion transplants and seed potatoes. So many types of yummy potatoes. Yukon gold sounds very good, what about little red russet potatoes? Maybe we will see the girls help out planting soon. Francesca, you look great today! Hope your neck is feeling much better.
We had a wonderful St.Patrick's day weekend. Mom ran in a Shamrock race on Sunday and we had quite a celebration too. Cards and lots of wearing green. I hope you all liked my Irish blessing poem.

  • Gee, I wonder if I planted the sprouted onions and potatoes growing in my refrigerator would grow if planted? ;-) (why does my husband always buy big bags of these? we never can eat all of it in a short period of time.

F & S does mommie martha have Purple Potatoes from South America? I got to taste those at a "NRA" convention not Rifle but Restaurant Association ~ he he ;-)

I'm so ticked off at Kitty right now, it started to snow about an hour ago 7:30am she is out, it now has accumulated to about 2" and the temp is dropping and suppose to bottom out to -0 with 3" of snow. She will not come in, because this weekend she enjoyed the sunshine although cold...she almost acts like she's in heat (but she's fixed)

Everyone have a better day then me!

  • Good Morning F & S

I'm so confused - why do you plant a potato to grow a potato - why not just eat the potato?? I'm going to ask mom for an explanation.

Mom worked in our veggie garden this weekend the soil is all turned and she put some organic fertiziler down. I didn't help this time it was too nasty out there on Saturday. Snow, rain, ice then rain again. Mother nature couldn't make up her mind so I just stayed indoors and watched from the sofa. I think the lettuce, swiss chard and spinach will go in this weekend.

I'm getting ready for the Easter Bunny. Mom and I started to stuff the eggs with money and candy for the big hunt. It's so much fun, I run around and steal the eggs ;) I can't believe it's only 2 weeks away!!

Can I ask everyone to keep Precious in your prayers. She seems to be tired a lot lately and not eating like she use to, I'm really sad. Mom has a call into Dr. Keefe I hope she feels better :(

  • Hello ladies, Kirby here.
OK now, who thought of putting something about a “greenhouse” on today’s post? There wasn’t a post yesterday, St. Patrick’s Day, and nothing about “green” until today. You two just had to sneak it in didn’t you? Very cleaver of you two. Maddox, let me know when you are in charge of the treats; I’ll come to visit. Just love treats. Can’t get enough of them. My “bald” spot is growing hair but I’m not allowed to scratch it. Daddy rubs it down for me once in a while. They say I’ll just have as little scar and won’t show much. What are they thinking? I have long fur and you’ll never see my skin, or scar, at all.
    Catch you later, Kirby.

  • Hey, how nifty about growing 'tatoes'! :) I had no idea that is how it's done. So the 'eye' must be kind of like a seed?

I need gardening 101 ASAP! :) I'm certainly a brown thumb kind of girl.

Another round of snow is heading to NH overnight.

To say I'm a bit miffed is an understatement. :)

    Happy Monday to all!

  • Hello Girls & Glue Squad Buddies,
Very late today because I have been waiting to hear about Mom's "pain in the neck" appointment with her doctor. Those bulging discs are bad news bears for Mom.

Anyway, I loved seeing about potatoes and onions. Think that I convinced Dad to plant some potatoes. He tried them before and didn't do to well, but then we didn't know Mama Martha's sources.

It was really warm and nice and sunbathing weather today. I just loved it. The skunks has been in rare form and stinking up the place at night. Very cautious going out. Glad to hear everyone's weekend was good. Rebel, those grandkids must be fun and Zoe, I am so excited for turning one and two this week I almost forgot about the Bunny. Dudley, Mom says your Mom likes to garden lots, and Abby's and Zoe's and Missy's and Trace's. I think I will be hearing a lot of garden stories soon. What red flowers can Mom plant for me than will come up every year? Well, gotta go help with dinner, cause of that "pain in the neck" think going on with Mom. Oh and Maddox give Sequoia and Wu Tang loves of congratulations from Ruby. Jimmy, I am still overwhelmed by your great poetic skills. You are one smart cat. Have sweet GEM dreams and talk soon.
    Love and licks,
    Ruby
