Studying Animal Tracks

Posted by F&S

The farm looks pretty covered with a blanket of snow.  Snow also offers something else.  It allows us to see all sorts of animal tracks - some quite normal and others quite surprising.

Sharkey, the thing about when there's a covering of snow, you get to see all of the animal tracks.

In addition to squirrel, I see many, many bird prints, too!

And what have we here? It looks like a well-beaten path. Let's follow the trail.

Ah-ha! Just as I suspected! It's the path of the donks!

Hi Clive, Rufus, and Billie! It's great to see you, too! Francesca and I are studying foot prints in the snow.

These tracks are pretty unmistakable. They definitely belong to one of the Friesian horses.

Franny, I also see plenty of tire treads. I bet we could match them up to the car. How CSI!

Now these don't look much like animal tracks. I think they belong to a human wearing heavy boots. I wish I had some boots, right about now.

Sharkey, these prints look pretty wild, like I don't think I want to run into the animal that made them. I believe it's a red fox because the tracks run in a straight line, one print in front of the other.

These are bigger, like they may me the mom's. Red fox tracks show four toes and claws, just like these. Let's leave this area at once!

  • All snowy paths lead to donks! :) At least in my heart they do! :)

Ooh clever investigating skills with the animal tracks. I see lots of gray squirrel tracks outside my home. The rest of the critters are in hibernation, I think! :)

NH has been in a couple day of bitter cold temps. I think we are heading up temp wise...it will like 'summah' :)

    Happy Weekend to all!

  • Once again, just too precious!! You guy's make me smile.

  • Hello ladies,
How are you doing this fine morning? Now girls, if you caught a squirrel, what would you do with it? Take it to the kitchen for Chef Pierre to make squirrel stew for Martha's next luncheon? Hehehehehehe
I was thinking, I like Friday's cause the people that have jobs are home with their pets for the weekends which is a good thing. But on the other paw, I don't like Fridays cause then we don't hear from the Glue Squad for two whole days. And that my friends is a bummer. So I am very torn about Fridays. So maniacs, what are your plans for the weekend? Anyone doing anything special? I am going to Maryland to spend time with Gerry and Dick over the weekend. But I have all the dogs under control at Karen's place so they should behave till I come back. They have to because none of them knows where the key is to the treat cabinet. Hehehehehehehe. Maddox rules yet again.
    Love to all,
    Maddox

  • Hi F,S,&GK+ Glue Squad, These are more great photos of you 2 girls walking around in the snow again! It looks pretty cold out there, but it looks like you had fun checking out all of those foot prints in the snow! Did you catch that squirrel?! I wouldn't want to be near that red fox either! We still have a coyote in our area, but I've never seen it! I can just smell where it's been in the yard! Hope you have a lovely first weekend of 2013 and Happy New Year! Gail, it's pretty cold where we are and the rain returned last night! We might even get snow pretty soon! Maddox, hope you have fun visiting Gerry and Dick over the weekend! I agree with you about Fridays because I miss seeing new blogs over the weekends, too! Sure hope all of you other Glue Squaders are doing well! Mom and I have to cut lots more wood this weekend because Uncle Tim found some great big pallets for us! Sure keeps us busy! Happy New Year to all of you! Love, Dudley Do Right XOXOXO+

  • Hello ladies, Kirby here.
Those tracks in the snow are really interesting to look at. I know you can identify animals by the smell of those tracks, but just being able to tell the animal by looking at their tracks takes some time and knowledge. As for me, I can identify many animals which come around my house. I learned the smell of many animals in my travels with my Daddy. Some of those animals we didn’t want to run into, but we did. I stood really still and said, “Be brave Daddy, be brave.” He was brave; the bear went one way and we went another. The bear didn’t mean us any harm. All he wanted was to get to the garbage can behind us. Hehehehehe
    Catch you later, Kirby.

  • Hello Girls & Glue Squad Buddies,
Footprints in the snow, heh? This reminds me of some Sherlock Holme's investigations. You two could call yourselves, the Wag Investigators. Hehehehehe I wish we still had snow on the ground to help me in my investigations. Yesterday, I got into big trouble, not just chasing squirrels, but Yukon, the dog next dog that just happens to be the same age as me, was barking at the squirrel. I soon learned to chase and bark. That darn squirrel just sat in the tree for an eternity teasing us. That is why Mom and Dad have decided to put up a 6 foot wooden fence on that side, so I don't see the other dog. I like to dig under fences to get to him and go through our flower and where the veggie garden will be in summer. So putting off painting and carpeting inside and planning the Ruby proof yard. I never knew to bark at those darn squirrels, but learned quickly. When they tried to get me to quiet down I butt vroomed around and around the yard and stopped just to throw up, I was excited. Squirrels, my world has expanded big time. Well, Maddox this is very clever to hide the key to the treats. You are one clever champion dude. The best Glue Squad Professor ever. I will check back because I have to hear from ALL of you to have a good weekend. Have a GEM of a day.
    Love & licks,
    Ruby

  • Franny and Sharkey I love the little coats you have on! :-) We have tons of tracks, mostly Deer, matter of fact yesterday for some reason a helicopter flew over our area real low rounding up deer. I have no idea what was going on, but the deer were running into the road. I do think it was the DNR.
A couple of days ago two grown deer with two small deer came and laid down right at the edge of the tree line of our yard, they slept there for the evening...so cute.
Glad to know what the Fox paw prints looks like since we have Fox here. Our neighbor said, they have heard reports of wolves in our area, besides the coyotes....maybe this is why Kitty doesn't go out!

gail, you have it bad for Donks, don't you!

Oh my, it's Friday again? how fast time is going by...I don't like that! :-(

Hope everyone is well and that the weekend will be safe and happy...

    delia & Kitty =^. .^=

  • Good Morning F & S

T-Bone caught a squirrel once and Precious tore it apart. Dad found her laying in the grass chewing the varmit to shreds - totally grossed me out. Have you ever chased that fox around? That would be kind of cool ;)

Looking forward to the weekend and helping mom we are going to clean out the kitchen cabinets. It's that time of year when mom gets the cleaning bug - happens every January. Then she moves on to the closets and we take lots of bags to Goodwill. Mom says if she didn't wear something last year it goes in the bag. I wish she would take some of those outfits she buys me - I'm sure there are dogs that need clothes - I hate wearing anything!!!

Well F & S and my Glue Squad buddies - have a great weekend. Stay warm and safe :)

    Zoe

  • Hello Francesca, Sharkey, Maddox,Rebel, Kitty, Dudley, Ruby Tuesday and all my glue squad buddies-
What a nice animal tracking session. Yesterday, mom bundled me up for one too out in the snow and field by our house. Pug/peke/frenchies are low to the ground so I was happy to run around in my fleece outfit despite the snow. We saw deer tracks (ungulates), bird tracks, squirrel tracks and rabbit tracks. Thankfully no coyote tracks. Mom even showed me impressions in the snow where the deer bed down at night.
O.K. so who's ready for spring ???? Bartok looked so funny the other day in the girl's toy box. Rebel, we are so sorry to hear about Happy passing away. Feel better buddy.
Maddox, enjoy your road trip! Ruby, take care of your mom and her sore neck. Hope everyone, especially Missy Chow has a great weekend! love and woofs- Abby

  • Good morning ladies,
I've been doing some tracking, too. I have found rabbit, squirrel, little birds, big birds and THE COYOTE! Yikes. There was a small flock of robins this morning eating the berries off the ornamental crab trees. They sure made a lot of tracks in the snow!
Well, everybody. I've been to Dr Becky's already this today, got my injection & my peanut butter and gave a lot of kisses to Janine, my favorite assistant. I have one more injection next week & that should be it. Did I tell you I now have cherry eye and will need surgery on both eyes. Whew. I like Dr. Becky and all but this is getting a bit much. Mimi says that we won't do that right away & Dr. B says that's o.k.
In the meantime...I am having a very quiet weekend. The folks will be busy putting away the Christmas decorations and I'll stay cozy in my bed with my new brown blanket by the fire.
    Great weekend to all!
    Your pal,
    Rebel

  • Hi Girls & Glue Squad, You are quite the detectives checking out those footprints. The only ones we have on the other side of my fence are the squirrels, and one "large" print in my area; oh wait, those are my prints. Rebel, so sorry to hear about Happy, remember the good times you had with her. Maddox, have fun this weekend-I'm sure your other friends will be good until you come back, they will be looking forward to their treats. Ruby, those squirrels know how to get us into trouble for sure. Dad usually has to make some noise before he lets me out if he sees them before I do or else I'll chase them out of the yard; then, they look at me probably chuckling to themselves. Hope all my other buddies are doing okay. Not much happening this weekend, maybe the weather will warm up just a little, it's been cooold this week. Mom's put away the Christmas decorations and she didn't even ask me for my help either,I could have helped ;)

    Have a nice weekend everyone.

    Till next time,
    Missy Chow
    xoxo

  • ...I, too, am an excellent tracker..being a old farm dog, every time it snows I race out and check the prints, though I can't see any more, I can smell them..and Lucinda confirms my answers..it snowed lightly the other day and there were grouse, coyote, raccoon, deer, elk and assorted bird prints..and that was just around the house..imagine had we gone in the woods..oh Ivan and Ivanka tracks, too,..we had our bon-fire the other nite..James built a huge fire and made an enclosure next to it to keep all the doggie pals warm and out of harms way..like falling in the river or getting nipped by a raccoon..guess what Ivan and Ivanka jumped over the enclosure fence and ran around crazy like..I cheered them on..!it was fun...I am still worn out..hope all my dog buddies have a safe and happy week-end..over and out, Cora-Belle, the cattle-dog

  • Rebel I am sorry to hear about your upcoming eye operations. I visited my eye doctor yesterday. I am very lucky because it looks as if my ulcers are almost completely healed and I won't need eye surgery. Yay! I will keep good thoughts for you and hope Dr. Becky does a fantastic job on your cherry eyes. Ruby, I don't want to give away any secrets, but you will probably soon learn that it is almost as much fun to chase the dog along the fence even when you can't see them as it is when you can. That's what Roxy and I do with the next door dog.
    A bientot!
