Exploring an Icy Farm

Posted by Sharkey

After G.K. and I watched the farm crew clearing and chipping wood, we took a little drive further into the woods to see if there was anything else to observe.  I know it's been super cold outside, but I had no idea just how cold until we came upon the following.

G.K., have you ever wondered what makes some ice cloudy like this little stream?

4 G.K., have you ever wondered what makes some ice cloudy like this little stream?

Well, it’s cloudy because tiny air bubbles, which refract the light, get trapped when the ice forms. This is clearly visible with home-made ice cubes, because the water used is usually from the tap, which aerates the water.

Ice, of course, forms when liquid water is cooled below 32ºF or 0ºC. It's been plenty cold for even moving water to freeze solidly.

G.K., I know that you are dog with a really thick coat of fur and you probably feel pretty comfortable out here in the freezing cold. I, on the other paw, am feeling quite frosty and I'd like to go home now.

  • Hello Sharkey, G.K. & Glue Squad Buddies,
What a perfect day, out touring the farm and in the cold. Fun and double fun!!! You are lucky to have all the cold and ice. It will be nice for your gardens. If you all don't start sending some of this to Colorado, we will be in big trouble in the summer. G.K. you are such a great brother to be keeping Sharkey warm. Give hugs to Francesca from Ruby!!

Did you all see our very own Ron, Director of Social Media in Mama Martha's photos today? One handsome dude I must say. They all look so happy at her celebration.

Now, Jake I was asking Mom about this fixed business.
I guess it happened to me a while back too. She said it has to do with the birds and the bees. So tell me all about it when you come home--I can't remember. Are there a lot of birds and bees? Now, Cora Belle, do you think you will invite Ivan and Ivanka over when the Chiweenies come? Or do you think they will want their own time with you? Zoe, glad to hear it is warming up for you. Dudley, have you buddy been out supervising Mom at the wood chopping? Abby, soon it will probably be warm enough for you to go to work with Mom. And Martha, Lucy and Riley, tell your Dad a Happy Late b-day. I usually sing to everyone. I am practicing for Martha on the 1st. Sounds like the walks were fun. Did I tell you all my Ruby fence is completed? Looks good! Missy, what trouble did you get into? Rebel, keep resting and feeling good. Everyone, have a GEM of a day.
    Love & licks,
    Ruby

  • Ice Ice Baby!

It's a skating rink here in NH this morning...

Which would be beneficial if I was Dorothy Hamill! :)

However, I am not! Down went the de-icer on the walkways.

    I keep calling Spring...but, she's not answering! :)

    Be safe pooches!

  • Good morning everyone,
I hope Francesca continues to improve every day. GK, you are doing a good job of filling in for her. The last picture on the blog today made me laugh. Sharkey looks so tiny standing next to you. And may I say, you both look marvelous.
Ok, I am playing catch up with all of you but I am now up to date Zoe, how is Precious? Please give us any info you get on the vet report that will come later this week. Rebel, Mimi is a very busy person. Now she is making quilts. I bet they will be beautiful when she is done. Maybe she will make a mini one for you. Kirby, I was going to tell you to come North but it is supposed to be in the 60's today. Dudley, maybe Martha can design something that looks like a headset but would act like earplugs for animals of all sizes.
Ruby, I never saw the recipe for the Warrior Prince Basil treats either. Karen doesn't bake but I will just give a real sweet charming look at the neighbor and she will fall under my spell and make some for us. Hehehehehehe. Cora-Belle, how does Lucinda look with her new doo? How many critters can you get on your trailer? Maybe we can have a Glue Squad Explore The Ranch In The Trailer Day with you and James can be our chauffeur.
Baby Favor, thank you for the info on the nose butter. My nose is fine but Yucky and Abram are older and they have dry noses. Martha, Lucy and Riley, please wish your dad a Happy Belated Birthday from me and Karen. You will have two big parties this week cause yours is on Friday. Was Huu. Missy Chow, don't be sad. It sounds like you misbehaved but you are young and you will learn as you go. And remember, your parents love you even when you are bad. Abby, James Dean, Molly and Jake, Kitty and the rest of you maniacs, have a great day. I'll be back on Friday
    Love to all,
    Maddox

  • Sharkey, to continue your thread, I on the other paw am glad I live in Texas where we have had record high temperatures lately. It's hard to fathom frozen streams when one is running around in tank tops and flip-flops (not easy on 4 paws, to tell you the truth). Stay warm and tell Franny to get well soon!

  • Hello ladies, Kirby here.
Boy it must have been really cold for moving water to freeze. I’ll be it froze a little at a time and not all at once. They tell me that all the rivers freeze during the winter in the far north; even the ocean. Now that’s my kind of weather. I’ll bet that Daddy and could find a bear up there. I sure would like to see a polar bear just as long as he doesn’t see me. Hehehehehe I saw a white Chow Chow one time. I’ll bet those bears look a little like that. Wait a minute here. We started off talking about frozen water and ended up on white Chows. Just ‘shows to go you’ how much we Chows know.
    Catch you later, Kirby.

  • Morning Sharkey, GK & Glue Squad Buddies, You two look so cute together, Sharkey, stay warm next to GK. Be sure to keep Frannie updated on the icy stream and the happenings on the farm. GK, you are sooo handsome, be still my heart!! Handsome just like your Dad ;) !!! Ruby & Maddox, I'm trying to be good today, you see, when Mom came home yesterday from work,(1) I had something in my mouth that I shouldn't have had, she took that away, (2) I checked out her cactus plants in the living room, (3) then while she was checking her plants, I headed to the counter tops while she was getting dinner ready; (4)I got into "cat overdrive from the front window", not a good idea so that's why I was in trouble. My adventure puppy days are still with me.
Rebel, how are you doing? Kirby, we are suppose to hit the 50's today. Zoe, sounds like a busy day for Mom today. Cora Belle, a tractor ride, sounds like fun. Dudley Do Right, hope you are doing well. Hi Kitty, have you found anything interesting outside lately? Abby & James Dean, how are things with both of you? Hi Molly, Jake, good luck with your fixed business ;) , Martha, Lucy & Riley, wish your Dad happy belated birthday for me, did you get him something good? Hi, Lynn, Gail, Delia, Sonya..hope I didn't miss anyone.

Better run, outside time for me before the rain comes later today.

    Till next time,
    Missy Chow
    xoxo

  • OMGoodness!!! what is going on with this weather? yesterday 60 degrees and little rain, snow melted and now freezing rain and huge snow flakes dropping to -2 degrees by tomorrow, this has to be one of the oddest winter weather ever here, and I thought when I moved to Missouri in 1983 I was living on Mars, the weather there was so strange. Something definitely is going awry and think it must have something to do with the ice melting into the ocean.
So much for the weather report! :-(

Kitty slept in her tent outside most of the day yesterday, she was happy with the warmth. I just opened the door for her to go out and she turned around and looked, "are you kidding me!?" running right back in.

Sharkey you are so smart knowing all the scientific explanations for things...nice to see you and GK doing things together. :-)

I'm cooking a nice Stew today and making a Pineapple upside-down cake for hubby as a Welcome home meal...he's been in California since the 16th

Have a better day then I will be having...brrrrr
    delia & Kitty =^. .^=

  • Hello all the GSquad buddies:
Hope everyone is on the mend, or at least is doing OK. Franny and Precious, we are thinking about you and wish you speedy recoveries. Sharkey and GK, we certainly would like to ride around in that cool vehicle you have on the farm, we are always up for adventure. We have a small garden tractor with a cart, Dad tried to pull us around in it, but it was just too strange and we jumped out.
Well yesterday's party was nice, we all got a little bit of chicken and a tiny smidge of birthday cake - not our usual fare, but it was a special occasion and we are all for special occasions! As Martha will be 6 on Friday we are going to get a pizza - we all love pizza and on our birthdays we are allowed a piece each! Can't wait cause pizza is soooo good - just pepperoni and cheese, no green or red things for us!
Ruby, your fence sounds wonderful, it will keep you safe for sure. Maddox and Ruby thanks for the birthday wishes for our Dad. Well its crazy weather again, today its in the low 50s, tomorrow its supposed to be freezing again. We have had so much rain (I'd love to send you some Ruby) that Mom says we need to start thinking about building an ark (what is an ark?) - everything is so soggy, and we need to get towelled off every time we come in the back door.
I too am calling Mother Nature about getting Spring here early, Old Man Winter can leave any time now, although we still have February to get through. March usually is a more hopeful month, and much lighter. Well gotta go, Mom says we need to get some work done today, we'll of course be supervising, like usual.
Bye for now, Lucy (writing), Martha and Riley.

  • Hi F,S,&GK+ Glue Squad, Sweet Sharkey and handsome GK, you both look so cute traveling around the farm and checking out the frozen streams!! Sharkey, you are so brilliant telling us all about how the streams are frozen! Sure wish that Franny could be out there with the two of you, but I'm sure she is getting better and will join you later! Zoe, our weather changes a lot, too from fog to freezing to rain to wind! Ruby, we did see Ron on Martha's great blog today-wonderful! Yes, I help Mom as often as I can so it will stay warm in our home! Gail, we wish it was warmer, also! It did get up to 48 yesterday! Maddox, you always have great ideas and I would like something to keep the loud sounds away! Malcolm, I sure wish it was warm like your place in Texas! Kirby, you are another great Chow and I love your comments, too! Hope to hear from you others later today! Hope all of you are safe and doing well! Love, Dudley Do Right XOXOXO+

  • Good morning G.K. & Sharkey!
Ohhh, what a chillly walk. Our little lake was frozen and even had some folks out there with sticks and a flat black thing. Boy, were they smacking it around! They were skating real close to the lake edge, nobody went out to the center. Mimi says if the ice is dark then it's not safe. Doesn't matter to me, I'm not going out there!
I had to chuckle at pic #7, too! What a pair you make, the big and the small.
Hey, Zoe, I'd like to know how Precious is doing, too.
Ruby, you sing? That's super! I love to hear my neighbor, Erroll sing along with the fire truck sirens.
Well, you pals out East watch out today. Storms on the way.
    Til Tomorrow.
    Your well-at-last pal,
    Rebel

  • Hello Francesca,Sharkey,G.K.,Ruby Tuesday,Kirby,Professor Maddox, Sweet Dudley, Missy Chow, rebel and all my buddies-
I always wondered about that white ice. We had a lot of ice on the roads on monday, today most of the snow has melted and its 55. Wild weather, supposed to be cold again on the week's end.
I WANT SPRING!!! Ruby, if we could send our snow to you we would. Don't like that stuff on my feet.
Mom has to go back to work today, she misses the animals at the hospital. She calls her favorite dog boarders- "wolf dogs". I prefer to be called "pumpkin" myself. Rebel, sounds like you were watching good ole hockey! Martha,Riley, happy belated birthday to your mom. Zoe,Maddox, are you sleeping out on the deck? We did not know Kitty had a little tent outside, must be a teepee- (don't tell Zoe).
Missy Chow, stay away from those cactus plants. Hope franny is feeling better. Anyone getting ready for Valentines day yet? Jimmy is upstairs making valentines. Hugs and woofs to all- Abby

  • I hope you felt nice and cozy when you got home after that icy trip out! Love your blog! So cute.

  • Don't fall in Sharkey!!! You and G.K. look like wandering explorers in the woods. Good thing G.K. is extra fluffy in case you get too chilled before you get back home. Franny I hope you are quiet and recovering nicely little girl.

Zoe how is your sweet sister Precious? I hope things are going much better. How is everyone? Crazy weather. Yesterday in Chicago it was 63 and today its back down to 37 yikes! Stay warm and cozy everyone!

  • hi fellow doggers..wish I could have been there to explore with you..hope you barked and and acted naughty..that is what I do on an adventure..cold and wet here in my end of Washington..bet Dudley has the same weather up at Puget sound...nothing special going on here today...think it is a lounge around day, I see Lucinda has a stack of magazines next to her couch..she still likes a real magazine..but does books on her Kindle...hope she doesn't think she is getting on my couch..so I better race over and get on it..talk to you all later..love, the Cora-Belle

  • Good morning S&F&GS,

Brrrrrrrr Jake and I remember the cold in the midwest but still I don't remember it THAT cold. Sharkey, maybe you need one of those fabulous coats that Martha has for you on. Looks like GK is nice and warm in all his fur!

Ruby, I will tell Jakey that it all about Birds and Bees. He will like that because he is always chasing them in the yard! I had a similar procedure done a year ago and don't remember seeing any birds or bees. Actually I don't remember anything of that time!

Hope all you Midwesterners and Easterners keep warm! Our Mom and Dad said there were benefits to moving out here to San Diego. Now I can see why!

    Molly
