Our Terrace Garden Gets Covered in Burlap

Posted by F&S

Getting the farm ready for winter is a daunting job.  So many things need to be stored away and so many plants and garden ornaments are covered with burlap.  We've watched the farm crew do these things year after year, but it's always amazing to see.  We're just glad that they are so capable and have so much energy!

You're right, Sharkey. Martha takes this winter burlapping very seriously. Everything that can be damaged by the snow and frigid winds is covered over.

The crew used bamboo for the boxwood hedges, but I suppose this terrace garden requires a different type of structure. It looks like they're using some of Dominick's farm-made lumber.

They seem to be using a circular saw for cutting the lumber.

Chhiring, don't you dare turn that saw on with me standing here. I need a pair of safety glasses!

Sharkey, it looks like they're also using a power drill for their building project to screw all of the pieces together. What's important is that it's built to last.

This structure certainly looks complicated and every year it seems to be built differently. I suppose what matters in the end is that the teucrium, miniature boxwood, and the golden barberry are covered snugly for the winter.

Phurba, with all of your burlap experience, you have become a master sewer. Great job!

  • I agree with the sewing skills on the burlap are incredible!

Sheesh, I can't even sew a button on a blouse!

I think I need help from Martha's stellar gang of helpers! :)

  • Hello Girls & Glue Squad Buddies,
You girls are very lucky to have so much help on the farm. Wow,Mama Martha must own a burlap factory to cover everything on your farm. Good work everyone!! We are expecting snow this weekend. Yahoo for me to play in it. Yesterday was much better after my panic after the vet's. Cora Belle, Mom and Dad are going to take me for a ride every day to the coffee shop and I will stay in the car, and mom will bring me a treat with the coffees and the we will go home. I won't even have to get out of the car and panic and wonder why they are taking me somewhere. This will be a little drive and a treat. We hope this calms me a bit about them leaving me. I love my new home and I know my family loves me. Hey, I learned the doggie door yesterday with Dad's patience. I was afraid to come in and get in trouble. Dad gave me treats until I knew it was o.k., then about 50 million times in and out. This learning about Life Is Good is great. Everyone have a "GEM" of a day.
    Love &licks,
    Ruby

  • It amazes me that this is done every year, the best part, someone has a job!!! Kudos to MS! :-)
Now just looking at that photo of Chhiring scared the heck out of me, holding the saw like that can make for an injured leg....yikes!
Ruby how nice to be able to take a ride with your loving humans, have a great time and enjoy the treat!
Kitty is in this morning sleeping by the computer, it's a whopping 23 degrees, just too cold...a far cry from 60's.
Have a great day everyone!!! :-)

  • Abby---I forgot to tell you that Weston sings me that song Ruby Tuesday. Don't tell anyone though. I really like it. Have a "GEM" of a day.

So nice to hear from Rebel, Gail, Ruby, and Delia already this morning!!!! Ruby, you are doing much better every day and I know your Mom and Dad love you!!! Delia, it's cold and wet here! • Hello ladies, Kirby here.
A little late again today, but I am here. So it’s getting cold there Delia; where is that so I can come and enjoy it too. Maybe going to visit Ruby would be more fun; snow on the way. What fun you will be having. Or maybe you could come to visit me and get away from all that cold, and wet, stuff. It will be colder here today with a high of only around 69 or 70. But don’t think that winter doesn’t come to the south; it last about a week or so. Hehehehehehe. Enough with the weather, now to the sports desk. That’s the way it usually is around here. First off is the news, then the weather and the sports last. Funny thing here, there are no sports today. In that case,
    Catch you later, Kirby.

  • Hi everyone. Oh my, I can't believe so much time has passed since the last time I was here. We've been quite busy helping Roxy get used to living with us and then she went and had her spay day. She got kinda sick afterwards, so I have been nursing her back to health.
Maddox, I am called Baby Favor (my registered name is something much fancier) because when I was born I lived in the house with a pup called Baby Girl. Well, my little nose was a little out of joint because I wanted to be THE baby. So FirstMama called me Baby Favor as if to imply I was the favored baby. Of course, good FirstMamas always make each and every baby feel like a favored baby! Anyway, the name stuck. At my new home they call me Gracie sometimes and Baby Favor sometimes. I don't care what anyone calls me so long as they don't call me late for dinner! (Sorry, Mom made me say that.)

  • Hello Francesca, Sharkey, RUBY, Dudley, Kirby Bear, Maddox, Rebel and Beautifullll Kitty,.....
Purrrrrrr. ooops... Big persian paws got in the way. Great job watching all the winter preparations around the farm covering the plants. Franny, no jacket today? Sharkey stay away from that circular saw, not right holding it by a leg. Looks dangerous.
What a great job the man is doing actually sewing the burlap to fit the plants and bushes, amazing work.
Dudley, hugs to you for always thinking of others in your posts. Kirby. its warm here too 51 degrees and mom likes driving on clear roads. Sunshine is out, good weather for cat napping. RUBY, Congratulations for mastering the dog door in one day!!! I am excited for you for the coffee trips each day in the car and lots of treats. Cora belle, stay warm and hope you DO NOT have to wear an orange vest. Where is our meditation leader Maddox? Where is Zoe??? Abby also sends her very best woofs to Missy Chow. Abby is being obstinate and won't eat her medicine today in cheese. I would eat cheese!!!
Stay warm and safe sweet Kitty. Hugs and purrs to all- James Dean the persian cat

  • So much work to do on the farm. Good thing you ladies are there to supervise all of the work. I still think you two would look cute as buttons wearing your own little doggie tool belts. It would make for an awesome photo shoot.

Hello to everyone! I hope a great day is had by all!

  • ..wow..what helpers you are..frost on my ramp this morning..brrr...Ivan and Ivanka (the BIG shepherds from down river) are outside racing around our yard..I love those crazy guys..remind me of myself when I was young and goofy..so I better get a couple warrior prince cookies and race out there and hear what they are up too...all my dog buddies have a great day..over and out, Cora-Belle

  • Oh my, again I am very late. I am so sorry. Karen had some important stuff she had to do on the computer today and then Mammy Jean used it. I took a nap and now it is my turn. I was thinking. I know you are all probably wondering what the heck I was thinking about now. But I was thinking that if Martha had an artist come to the farm they could paint flowers and leaves all over the burlap and then it would look like spring time all winter long. Wouldn't that be kool? Well, except when the snow would lay on top of the burlap but the grounds crew could scrape it off of the burlap. I think that would be pretty darn neat, eh?
Thank you for telling us about your name Baby Favor. Rebel that is good news about no mites. Zoe's mom is on va-ka so Zoe can't use the computer. Cora-Belle you seem like your old chipper self again. That makes me very happy. Kirby, I am sorry to hear your cone had to come back out.
Well gang, it is a beautiful day so I am going to get as much deck time as I can so until tomorrow I will say, love to all.
    Maddox

  • Hey Ruby,
I was thinking about your situation. When your mom and dad go into the coffee shop tell them to leave you a cell phone so if you miss them while they are away from you, the options are to text them with the phone or eat the phone. Either way you will be too busy to think about missing them Hehehehehehe
    Love ya,
    Maddox
