Our Tree Survey Continues

Posted by F&S

On yesterday's blog, we showed you one of the mighty trees that fell at the farm during Hurricane Sandy.  As we continued our drive, we came upon so much more damage.  One area really took a  beating and after seeing it, we decided to stop looking.  It's heartbreaking to see so much destruction.

Francesca, as we drive around the farm, it's simply shocking to see how many trees fell during the hurricane! The maple woods alongside Maple Avenue especially took a beating.

Look at the size of this maple tree!

This tree must have made a horrible sound when it crashed to earth!

The trunk is massive! It's unbelievable that it was blown over.

Sadly, it's only one of many that bit the dust that day.

I think we have enough firewood to last a lifetime.

You can say that again, Sharkey!

There's another pile over here.

Those aren't the only kind of wood piles around here. Look at this big pile of wood chips!

These wood chips smell awfully good, but the whole thing makes me enormously sad.

  • .yes, that is a lot trees down..but thank goodness they are just trees..it could have been much worse...and you will all be snuggy and warm this winter with all that wood...we always have a lot of big firs go down during the winter..but it seems that for every one down another seedling takes its place... i am feeling very tired so I am going to take a couple days off..will check back Friday..so all my fellow doggers behave and I'll chat with you Friday...love you all, Cora-Belle

  • F & S if you changed the way you thought about the changes you see, from destruction to opportunities I know you would come up with some new projects, etc. As hard as it was to accept when it first happened, there are new things and events out there waiting to be done. It is the cycle of nature to live, die and recycle.

  • Hello girls,
I too am sad to see all the trees down on your farm. But I was thinking. I know, I think a lot. But, when you said you had so much firewood, why not take it to the places where they lost their homes? There are still people living outside waiting for some kind of shelter. They don't want to leave what is left of their homes because of looters They could use the firewood to keep themselves warm. So many are without heat and power yet. Or, make arrangements with someone that sells firewood that you will give them firewood but a percentage of the proceeds must go to Sandy victims. That way you are changing a negative into a positive
Cora-Belle, I am very sad that you are so tired. Very sad. But I am so glad you told us when you would be back on the DW. You get your rest special lady. We will all miss you and think about you and hopefully by Friday you will be all refreshed again.
I hope everyone is doing well. It is raining. Yuk. Back to bed
    Love to all,
    Maddox

  • Good morning ladies,
Well, it is sad to see a mature tree come down. We had 3- 50 foot tall Norway pines die off. What a project that was to have them remove and all the sticky pine wood shredded. They had borers in them. But the roots have been removed and a pretty planting is there now. Sandy sure was a super windy storm, but the truly strong trees are still standing. Good thing, the squirrels & birds need homes, too. All that firewood will keep your little family warm for a long time to come.
Cora Belle, rest and we'll hear from you on Friday.
    Til tomorrow.
    Your Pal,
    Rebel

  • See this is exactly what I meant yesterday...not only is there wood to burn and keep you warm, but new growth will come, it rejuvenates. I'm sure mommie Martha will choose particular trees to grow again. Nonetheless, it is sad to see your own trees down.

Cora Belle I hope you're OK, rest up and tell Jim Thank You for his service! And a Thank You to all the Glue Squad friends that have served and or have a family member serving.

I will also be busy doing art for some commissions for the coming Holiday...but will check in and leave a small post. I tried getting Kitty to post but she is very lazy ;-)

    Hugs
    delia & Kitty =^, ,^= purrrs....

  • Hi F,S,&GK+ Glue Squad, You beautiful girls sure did a great job checking out more of the farm and finding so many cut up log piles of maple trees! You look so cute standing up on some of those piles and the huge pile of wood chips! I love your outfits! It's been cold and wet here, but is back up in the 50s now and more fun to go outside and help Mom cut her firewood! Cora-Belle, sure was fun to read your comments from yesterday and today! Hope you get some good rest and can't wait to hear from you on Friday! Maddox, you are our super new idea make-upper! It is so much fun to read all of your comments! Will check back later to read more comments! Hope you all have a great day! Love, Dudley Do Right XOXOXO+

  • Hello Francesca, Sharkey, Maddox, Super Dudley, Delia, Kitty and my friends-
It is sad to see the staely trees down that took so many years to grow and obtain their height. I am sure Mama Martha will replant new trees and take care of the damage done by the strom's wrath on her foliage. The tree branch that pierced the beautiful cottage house must have been difficult to deal with. It looked like a javelin on Martha's blog. We are thankful the frenchie dogs, G.K. and all the horses are safe.
Corabelle, hope you get lots of rest and comfort and cuddle time. Just dream about all the glue squad buddies at a nice bonfire eating maple bars, catnip cakes for the felines, hotdogs and that should make you have a good sleep.
Hugs and woofs and purrs from James dean- Abby alias batgirl

  • By the way, great job Kirby bear standing up to that husky, very brave buddy! Abby

  • Hello Ladies & Glue Squad Buddies,
Seeing all the damage done by Sandy is so bad. But what I am happy for, is that all my Glue Squad buddies are alright and their families o.k. My prayers go to all those recovering. I am late today as we are in full adoption mode for not one, but 2 pups. Yahoo for Lynn!!! Will is being a bit particular. Lynn wants anyone with fur and 4 legs. In other words he is thinking with his head, and I think with my heart. At this point we would have had several hundred new furry children if he had listened to me. Anyway, we are approved with flying colors to many rescues, so it is getting more and more exciting. This is a real test of my patience. Anyway, trying to think of Thanksgiving and Will and I are going to mountain for 3 days in the snow, with the camper over the weekend. I will miss Cora Belle during her rest time, but am glad she is keeping us informed. Hoping many Maple Bars are in her future this week. I have found someone that is much smarter than I on techno stuff and has said she would be the contact to Dr. Pia, when she asks the Glue Squad for photos. And that is.....drum roll please, Maddox's Mom, Karen. Dr. Pia will give all the low down. Thanks Maddox for telling Karen about this and lots of hugs to her, and thanks Zoe, for getting your Mom in charge of the e-mail list. Abby, I hope you are getting stronger. Will this always be underlying and have to watch for? Rebel, I can tell you are getting stronger as well. After all, how many days Zoe, until the man in the big red suit comes? All of you need to start getting your letters ready for Santa. Well, take it easy and have a great day.
    Hugs & smiles,
    Lynn

  • P.S. Didn't mean to sound confusing. Karen will be the contact when Dr. Pia wants our photos for The Daily Wag. Thanks, Lynn

  • Hi Girls & Glue Squad, You've been very busy the last two days checking for down tree & damage. Good job making sure that everything else is okay and all the other animals had been safe. Perhaps new trees will be planted in the future that will be able to withstand Mother Nature. Kirby Bear, you are funny. Glad you stood up to that husky. When we go for a walk and we pass a certain house in the neighborhood, sometimes their dog is out. Well, needless to say we "exchange conversations" too,Dad has to hold me tight; but once we pass the house, I'm back on my mission of walking. Cora-Belle, you get plenty of rest and c/c time with Lucinda & James. Zoe, where are you? Kitty, you didn't want to post today?? Hi to all my buddies, Maddox, Abby, James Dean, Dudley Do Right, Rebel. Hi to Lynn, Gail, Sonya.

One day late, but not forgotten; however, to Scott, our Veterans, thank you for your service.

I got into a couple of Mom's fall decorations this afternoon and tried to redesign them for her. Don't think she appreciated it too much. Besides, Dad was on a conference call and didn't see me either.

Better run, she needs the computer.

    Till next time,
    Missy Chow
    xoxo
