We Discovered a Wooly Bear!

Posted by F&S

The days are certainly getting shorter and cooler in our neck of the woods as autumn settles in.  Although we haven't gotten our winter wardrobe out yet, there have been times when we've thought about it.  Of course, everyone is speculating about what kind of winter we will have.  Last year was so mild and the year before, it seemed like it never stopped snowing.  But, who can predict the weather?

Hey Francesca! Come here, I want to show you something.

I think I've stumbled upon a woolly bear caterpillar!

You're right, Sharkey. Did you know that these fuzzy creatures have the reputation of being able to forecast the upcoming winter weather?

I remember reading that if the middle brown section is wide, then it will be a mild winter, and if the brown band is narrow, then the winter will be harsh.

And according to The Farmer's Almanac, these caterpillars are supposed to have 13 distinct segments of black and reddish-brown. Let's start counting!

Nine, Ten, Eleven, Twelve, Thirteen! It really must be a woolly bear!

Let me have a closer look, Franny.

How are we supposed to tell anything about the weather when this guy is all curled up?

Oh you silly dogs - go away and leave me be. Besides, why would you care how harsh the winter might be? I know for a fact that both of you have a fine winter wardrobe to keep you warm.

  • Good morning ladies,
The wooly bears are all crossing the roads. From one field to another. I think they're saying "would someone get that combine out of my neighborhood!" They roll up and blow all over the pavement when a car or truck goes by. The woolys by us are all very dark brown to black this year. Does that mean a lot of snow? Like you said, who knows. We'll just have to wait & see.
Not much going on here today. I'll check in later to see what everybody has to say.
    Your pal,
    Rebel

  • Hello girls,
That was funny, the wooly bear had a good come back for you. Cute little bugger, isn't he? I like the snow. I don't mind going out in the morning when it is snowing. Karen says she can never understand that because snow and rain are both wet on my feet but I don't mind the snow. It is a dry wet. hehehehehehehe
Hey mimi, nothing like making your own birthday cake cause then you know you will get exactly what you want. Good thinking. Glad the shot is working Rebel. Where are Zoe and Cora-Belle? I hope Zoe didn't get in trouble for her TP gift. And I hope Cora-Belle is not hiding cause she has to wear her vest. Well, Glue Squad family, it is nice and cool outside, tghe deck is dry and it is calling me, saying Come To Me Maddox. I always listen to what I am supposed to do, so I am off to the deck.
    Love to all,
    Maddox

  • Hello ladies, Kirby here.
When you said you found a Wolly Bear, I thought you were talking about me; I’m woolly and a bear. Hehehehehe Ok, so its not that funny. Well it stopped raining yesterday morning and I had a fine day. We are expecting some thunder storms later on today and tonight. That will mean no sleep for me; have to keep my Mommy company you know. All I can say about the coming winter is it will be another mild one for me. I just can’t seem to get enough snow to please me.
    Catch you later, Kirby.

  • Hi F,S,&GK+ Glue Squad, How interesting to see this wooly bear caterpillar because I just saw one on our sidewalk yesterday! The one I saw was black and reddish and out weather people did say we could have a mild winter but you never know until it comes! Mine didn't talk to me but it was fun to hear what yours had to say! Kirby, sorry about your rain so I will share our sunshine with you! Sonya, how was your weekend? We went to Costco and I got lots of treats and walks! Abby, you and JD sure have fun! Would love to see your Mom's craft stuff! Gail, I remember how much you love the donks and I would love to see them again, also! Missy Chow, glad your rain is gone! Hope you do get to go to PetSmart on your Birthday! Cora-Belle, hope you are OK and enjoying our nice fall weather! Rebel, so happy you are feeling better day by day! Maddox, I love reading everyone of your great comments! Will check back later to read more! Hope all of you have a great, safe day again! Love, Dudley Do Right! XOXOXO+

  • Hello Francesca, Sharkey, Wooly Bear, kirby Bear, missy chow, maddox, Dudley and all my glue squad buddies-
How nice to see a wooly bear caterpillar! I love to see them out on our grass crawling by. Abby saw a monarch butterfly chrysalis this summer hanging from the gate door of the small dog park in town.
Today is rainy so i am helping my mom make more bracelets. She is learning to work with chains and findings. My idea of findings are catnip- right Kitty- and stuffed mice.
Quite a few of you love snow but when the roads are bad mom stays over at work to take care of the dogs and cats so I don't like it because i am home waiting for her to return. It's only October so we still have some time in the warm sunshine.
Maddox, glad your deck is dry there for napping purposes. Kirby Bear, our favorite bear, glad you enjoy the winter. Dudley, hope you are having a wonderful day! Missy Chow, happy early birthday and we hope you get to petsmart! Rebel, how are those ducks?? Cora belle, hope you are having maple bars and fun by the river. Lynn, hope you do not have inclement weather this week and lots of purrs. Abby got in trouble this morning, which is RARE, and barked and spun in circles when she had to get down off a chair!! She is grumpy today so I am taking over the computer... Purrs and high paws to all- James Dean the persian cat XXXXX

  • Francesca and Sharkey you two girl crack me up! I bet if there wasn't someone photographing you guys, you'd have smoosched that poor Wooly Bear....sadly this is what I use to do, I'm ashamed that I have ever caused the demise of these cute creatures...I have no idea if they are good or bad, but I have learned a lot today form you girls. Thanks for sharing!

We had a couple of Foxes running through the yard yesterday, and Kitty wisely sat on the deck and watched them go into the woods. Last night Kitty came home at 1:30am and snuggled up to me on the bed, I just love it because it's short lived, and I enjoy any kind of personal contact from her.

Belated Birthday Wishes to those that added another year to their lives...and to the rest of my Glue Squad friends, enjoy whatever good weather is left.

Got to go paint another Paris scene...I'm on a role! I also did a couple of Plein Air paintings in Paris that I enjoyed doing...posted one on Facebook.

  • Hi everybody, I have been resting the last couple days.. I am taking some new meds..egads! I am a walking pharmacy!!!glad to hear that I am not the only one that woolly caterpillars talk to!..I missed a couple birthdays..so belated birthday wishes to my pals..hope everyone had great time..I like cake, too,..we have four baby feral kitties, I was resting out in the yard and one tried to pounce on me..in my younger days that would have never happened, I just let it think it was tough...Lucinda is going to bake me some Warrior Prince cookies today..and James said he would fire up the tractor and attach the trailer so I could patrol the property since walking is becoming more difficult for me..that will be fun..lots of blankets and me and Lucinda snuggled together spying on critters..James will lift me down so i can get a few barks in and let those critters know I am still in control..love to you all, Cora-Belle

  • Good Afternoon F & S and my Glue Squad gang

Oh where does the time go? This weekend just flew by and I missed Monday all together.

Dad had a great birthday and he loved the new shoes and socks we got him, very comfy and stylish. I made him a nice breakfast on Saturday morning and mom took him out to dinner - he had a great birthday.

I hope we have a mild winter I hate the snow. And I really hate wearing a coat. Mom has pulled out my sweaters already - brought a tear to my eye just the thought of chilly weather.

Precious has to go see the doctor tomorrow she keeps licking under her tail. Mom said there is nothing there but she keeps licking away at it. Sophie has to go on Friday for her annual checkup, I hope my name isn't on the checkup list :(

    Zoe

  • Aw, I like your new found woolly friend! What's his name? Willoby! :)

Last Winter in NH is was relatively mild. I'm hoping for a repeat...

    gail

  • "Wooly, wooly bully!" What kind of weather do you three want a mild winter, a snowy one, or a mixture? Give me warm weather every time. I bet many Glue Squadders are super busy these days but are doing quick lurking in.

  • Hello Ladies & Glue Squad Buddies,
I just loved this Wooly Bear post, and think you both are so sweet in taking the time to talk to the little guy. He is certainly keeping it under wraps what the winter weather will be. Rebel, I hope you are starting to feel better from the shot. How often do you get them while recovering? Cora Belle, I thought of Rebel loosing some fur, and thought that might be a good place for your sweater vest. I bet in the days ahead you will need it though. Glad Kirby and Maddox you didn't have to invest in scuba gear. Dudley, I can just see you munching on those Costco goodies and perhaps playing in leaves. Abby and JD how are Mom's decorating of the clinic going? I have put out another SOS to contact you Abby and hopefully soon we can have girl talk! I think you are all out playing in the leaves---Zoe, Missy Chow, Abby, Baby Favor,Cora Belle, Gail, Pam. I miss you all and hope you comment today. Delia and Kitty and Sonya, the Glue Squad needs you. Hope you all are just rolling in the leaves and having a great day.
    Hugs & smiles,
    Lynn

  • Hi Girls & Glue Squad, No playing in the leaves today. Raining again :-( . Thanks for the information on the wooly bear, I haven't found one yet, but then again I might not have known what it was either. If Mom finds one, I hope she shows me what it looks like so I won't hurt it.

Not much happening and I am really trying to be good, by being good, I get extra c/c time, and belly rubs.

Abby, tell Mom it must be the rain that is making you grumpy, I'm sure you didn't mean it.
Zoe, check that list, hopefully you are not it for a dr appts.

Hi Lynn & Delia and to all my buddies.

    Till next time,
    Missy Chow
    xoxo
