Do You Know a Crow?

Posted by F&S

We Frenchies have many friends at the farm, including a large number of crows.  These big black birds gather in communal groups, called roosts, in the autumn and winter and they are seen sleeping together perched in trees.  Needless to say, the roost can make quite a racket with such large numbers.  Anyway, we have witnessed  more crow activity lately and wanted to share our knowledge about these fascinating birds.

Hey Sharkey, do you see what I see?

Why yes, Francesca, it's that crow. As usual, it's perched on that same branch. I think it really likes it there.

I've heard folks say that crows are a bad omen of things to come.

But, in reality, crows are very, very intelligent creatures. In fact, they are considered to be the most adaptable and intelligent birds in the world.

Will you just look at it take flight? Did you know that during the day, groups of crows may fly up to fifty miles in pursuit of food?

Crows have a vast habitat but, they prefer areas where they can live in close association with humans and Frenchies.

A group of crows is sometimes referred to as a 'murder' of crows. Little wonder that some people feel uncomfortable with crows. I mean, what's in a name?

It's been proven that crows are so smart that they actually use tools! With the help of curved sticks, they can gather food from inside small areas.

They also say that crows are great with facial recognition. I guess we can consider them to be our friends, since they seem to live here at the farm.

Franny, maybe we should try caw-cawing so that we can communicate with these amazing crows. Martha always says that it really helps to have a strong network behind you.

  • Hello girls,
This is a very interesting post. I am very sorry that I am not commenting about the other Glue Squad members but I am so crazy worried about our Cora-Belle. She said she was taking off die a few days. I was hoping she would have posted by now.
I guess I should go to bed and try to get some sleep.
I hope she posts in the morning.
    I will be back
    Love,
    Maddox

  • Good morning everyone,
I am awake already. In my previous post I meant to say "she was taking off for a few days". My big fat paws once again got in the way.
Zoe it is good to have you back. No TP tricks for super nanny?
Abby, does your mom do a lot of running? Missy Chow and Kirby, are you both loving this weather? I am. Little ones like Rebel and Dudley don't have big fur coats like we do. Kitty, what about you? You probably don't mind the cold weather either. Franny and Sharkey have all those leaves to play in to keep them warm when they are outside. And Lynn, Gail, Delia, Sonya and all our Gkue Squad parents can wear long johns hehehehehehe
Well Lucibda or James or Cora-Belle, please give us an update on Cora so I can stop worrying. You know I would rather think than worry
    Love to all,
    Maddox

  • I love the close up photo of Mr. Crow.

    He's a dapper looking fella.

From what you have shared, crows seem quite smart creatures.

I like the tidbit about using sticks as tools. Very resourceful. :)

Caw-caw kachoo to you! hee hee

  • Hello ladies, Kirby here.
We have a few of those crows around here but the trees are so close together that they have problems getting into, and out, of my yard. When they do come, they usually have about ten or twelve of them at a time. Now that hawk doesn’t have any problems with the trees. He just folds his wings and sails right into the yard. He usually misses the birds because they always have a lookout. It is usually the squirrels. They make a funny noise when the hawk, or a cat, is around. The birds know this sound and hide. On the other hand, when a snake comes around, the birds warn the squirrels. One has to know the sounds of the animals around my house to survive.
    Catch you later, Kirby.

  • Mornin F & S

So what's up with the crows? They scare me reminds me of the movie The Birds. They are some very interesting facts you posted.

So Cora Belle where are youuuuuuuuu?????? It's not nice to make everyone worry. I hope you are ok!

Maddox no TP tricks for Super Nanny she kept the bathroom doors closed. I did get into the closet and found the baby toys mom keeps stored for the grandkids - loved the taste of the plastic blocks :) Now they have all little bite marks in them and they won't fit into the holes ;)

    Gotta run I hear breakfast!!

  • Hello Ladies & Glue Squad Buddies,
I think you girls should be called the crow whisperers. You are so very smart learning to talk to them. They can help you keep an eye out for bad critters like coyotes. Speaking of coyotes, I paniced, as we saw 2 on our night camera. I don't want to see a feeding frenzy one night--geez!!! Sounds like everyone is enjoying their Fall days. Beautiful aren't they? I am missing Cora Belle and hope also we hear from her today. Cora Belle, if Lucinda let you put your e-mail on our address list, I could send you Fall flower photos to cheer you up. Working hard on pricing today. Snow is moving in for Thursday-Friday. Abby, how did Mom do in her run? I bet she is sore. She is amazing doing those marathons. Will teases that I can't walk across the floor without falling, I am so clumsy. Have a beautiful Fall day all---hugs to everyone----Maddox, Zoe, Rebel, Abby, James Dean, Cora Belle, Dudley Do Right, Baby Favor, Missy Chow, Kitty, Delia, Sonya, Gail and Kirby and everyone my senior brain forgets.
    Hugs all around,
    Lynn

  • F,S,&GK+ Glue Squad, This blog about crows is so fascinating to see and read about! You girls sure know a lot about them and these photos are terrific! We have hundreds of crows in our area flying all around here, over to Puget Sound and into many of the fir trees in this area! They are the smartest birds who always protect one another from the hawks and eagles that fly here, also! I love hearing their babies hollering for food during the spring time and the parents feed them continually! Interesting to read the 1st 6 comments today and I am also very worried about our great Cora-Belle and my prayers are with her, Lucinda, and James!!! Hope all of you great buddies have a safe, wonderful day! Will check back later! Love, Dudley Do Right XOXOXO+

  • Hello Lynn, Francesca,Sharkey, the crows, Maddox, Kirby Bear, Zoe, Kitty and Delia,Dudley, and my friends,
What a great post! Mom loves crows and there is no doubt they are very intelligent birds. We loved your sweaters Franny and Sharkey and it was fun seeing you both vocalizing to the crows.
When mom runs by the pond in our town in the winter there is a small crow that actually follows her down the sidewalks and perches high up in the trees. He seems to know she will feed the ducks and the crow after her run crackers and old bread.
Mom runs several times a week but competes in 5Ks, only 3.1 mile races. I run up our grassy slope sometimes then take a big rest. I like to run at the dog park too.
Where is Cora belle?? Is she out there eating maple bars and enjoying some cuddle time? Nice post Kirby, our squirrels communicate a lot to each other too. Maddox, please don't worry too much. Lynn, we loved the pictures of Basil. Jimmy sends his best purrs to Empress Tang and Kitty. Well off to nap before work, high paws to all my friends from Abby alias Batgirl.

  • Sweet post about your friends on the farm. I too share my hopes and good thoughts that our pal Cora-Belle is getting some much needed rest and will be back ASAP. Hope ALL of our Glue Squad buddies are doing well.

  • S.O.S. Delia and Kitty,
Tried to send an e-mail and Basil photos to your art e-mail and it was returned. Then sent the same thing to the Glue Squad e-mail and it was returned. Hello Delia and Kitty are you there? Send me an e-mail so I can see what is going on.
    Hugs,
    Lynn

  • Hi Girls & Glue Squad, I did not know that information about the crows. There isn't a day that goes by, that we don't learn something new. From time to time, we can hear them but not often. But the squirrels, we have plenty and boy can they talk especially if a cat is cutting thru the woods. They definitely send out the message to the others in the area. Yes, Maddox, I am enjoying the cooler weather, it certainly is our time of year. I sure hope Cora-Belle is okay, keeping my paws crossed. Abby, you look so cute in your Batgirl attire. If I know Mom, she is thinking of some type of costume, but hasn't decided yet, oh boy!! Zoe, sounds like you had somewhat of a quiet week with S/N, are you back in full swing yet of your daily adventures? Hi to Kirby Bear, Dudley Do Right, James Dean, Kitty, Baby Favor - Hi Lynn, Delia, Gail, Sonya.

Didn't have much nap time today - today was Spa Day. Think I'll go catch a few zzz's before dinner, ;)

    Till next time,
    Missy Chow
    xoxo

  • ..hi everybody..I am feeling like my old self..just need to do a lot of resting..will check back with you all tomarrow..love, Cora-Belle

  • Don't you Frenchies look spiffy with those jackets! Yes do caw-caw, that would be hilarious seeing that coming out of your muzzles ;-) Crows certainly make noise, we have a gang (murder??)of them in our woods. Did you know that crows go after Owls and their babies and gang attack them? we saw it happen.
You can train a crow like a parrot to talk, I have seen and heard one in San Francisco years ago.

Got the photos Lynn and I wrote you back, they're so cute..thanks!
I was in Madison today at the doctor...so I'm late ;-(

Dear sweet Cora Belle, I do pray that all is well with you, and hope to hear what is causing you not to be here.
Maddox, Missy Chow, James Dean, Zoe, Rebel, Baby Favor, Abby, Dudley, Kirby, JD, Baby Favor and Cora Belle...Jan, Lynn, Sonya,Gail and if I forgot anyone YOU as well, have a Good Evening!!! :-)

  • Yeah!!!!!!
Cora-Belle, you are back. I am sooooooooooooooo very happy to see you are back. Girlfriend, you scare me sometimes. You make me worry about you. But I love you very much. We all do. And we care deeply for James and Lucinda too. Now I can stop worrying and start thinking about all kinds of things again.
Well Glue Squad, our girl is back. We can all relax a bit
