Checking The Crops For Frost Damage
Posted by F&S
Last Friday was a really chilly day and the weather reports were calling for widespread frost. We were so busy all weekend keeping up with Martha, that we didn't get to check on the crops until Monday. We must tell you that we weren't very happy with what we encountered.
1 Francesca, just last Friday, this patch of popcorn was bright green. Look at it now!
2 The temperatures really dove on Friday night and many tender annual plants were badly damaged. All I can say is that I'm glad I was all tucked up and cozy in bed when things got so cold.
3 Alas, from the looks of things, the ears didn't have time to mature and we won't have a popcorn harvest this year! However, all is not lost because the chickens will get to much on all of the immature ears. They love corn!
4 From the looks of things, something else also loves corn! Some varmint, or varmints, are having quite the feast!
5 Look at that! They just gnawed right through the husk and started chomping while the ear is still on the stalk! Francesca, do you smell squirrel?
6 Yes I do, Sharkey! However, I also smell something larger and something that usually comes out at night.
7 Could it be a raccoon? This cob is stripped clean!
8 Look how the corn is strewn everywhere! These garden thieves have no manners and no regard for neatness!
9 What's this on top of the paddock post?
10 Look how they're even making a mess up here!
11 Franny, do you suppose this popcorn could possibly taste good? Isn't it snack time? Should we try an ear or two?
