Checking The Crops For Frost Damage

Posted by F&S

Last Friday was a really chilly day and the weather reports were calling for widespread frost.  We were so busy all weekend keeping up with Martha, that we didn't get to check on the crops until Monday.  We must tell you that we weren't very happy with what we encountered.

Francesca, just last Friday, this patch of popcorn was bright green. Look at it now!

The temperatures really dove on Friday night and many tender annual plants were badly damaged. All I can say is that I'm glad I was all tucked up and cozy in bed when things got so cold.

Alas, from the looks of things, the ears didn't have time to mature and we won't have a popcorn harvest this year! However, all is not lost because the chickens will get to much on all of the immature ears. They love corn!

From the looks of things, something else also loves corn! Some varmint, or varmints, are having quite the feast!

Look at that! They just gnawed right through the husk and started chomping while the ear is still on the stalk! Francesca, do you smell squirrel?

Yes I do, Sharkey! However, I also smell something larger and something that usually comes out at night.

Could it be a raccoon? This cob is stripped clean!

Look how the corn is strewn everywhere! These garden thieves have no manners and no regard for neatness!

What's this on top of the paddock post?

Franny, do you suppose this popcorn could possibly taste good? Isn't it snack time? Should we try an ear or two?

  • Hello Ladies,
I'm with Gail. Find the popcorn theif. G.K.,where is big brother when you need him. He can be the lookout and watch and Mama Martha and you girls be ready to take them down. Yummy, popcorn is one of my favs with a good movie. Working hard again today on final things for the craft show. Always think I need to do more. It is 2 1/2 weeks away--Nov.2. Getting excited. Bet Zoe is Miss Mischief with Super Nanny. Sounds like everyone had a good weekend. Oh, I name all my scarves and just tagged the last 40 yesterday and guess what names some took---Abby, Zoe, Missy. Boys, the Warrior Prince Biscuits will be dedicated to you. Have a great day all.
    Hugs & smiles,
    Lynn

  • Hello Francesca, Sharkey, Corabelle, Lynn, Maddox and all my friends-
Hey glue squad buddies, maybe we can set up Lynn's night vision camera and catch the popcorn eating bandits! Then we can all lead a charge and bark or howl and scare the critters away for good! Corabelle can come up in her wagon like a general and Dudley can sound the bugle. Kitty and Jimmy can pounce and growl, she has fox experience now and he keeps squirrels away from the house.
Karen, hugs for you, Maddox and your son Scott. You are in our thoughts today.
Dudley, we had some rain this weekend but its sunny today! Zoe, did you get some treats with super nanny?
Kirby hope your tail feels better.
Lynn, that is so nice you named the scarves after the girl glue squad members. It must be hectic getting everything ready these last few weeks before the craft show. Mom e-mailed you :)
Mom is getting ready to go running so its my nap time.
Hugs and purrs from Jimmy and Abby

  • Oh my F & S, that looks like a Squirrel thief to me!!!! Wow what havoc they cause, so disrespectful leaving all that leftover here and there...guess you girls will have to go on Squirrel patrol!
I go everyday on the perimeter of our yard and chase the squirrels, but mommie delia won't let me catch them. It's fun running them up the trees, they turn around and make this funny noise at me and swish their tails in displeasure. :-)
Kitty got to the computer before me, so just want to say "Guten Morgan" I will be taking advantage of a warm day, hubby just left for golfing, probably his last time this year.

Muah to all the kit-kats and to all the doggies here... oh...yes, and the Glue Squad loves that take care of them.

    delia & Kitty =^. .^=

  • Hi F,S,&GK+ Glue Squad, Gosh, it must not have been so cold when you checked on those damaged popcorn stalks since you weren't wearing any coats! You both did look disturbed about whom ever was eating the popcorn ears! The mess they left sure looked awful! Did you try eating any of the popcorn ears?! At least the chickens will love them! Where is everyone today? Only read Gail's and Lynn's comments so far and they were great!! We had a very windy night all night long and the rain has finally stopped for a while! Will check back later and hope all of you are doing well today! Love, Dudley Do Right XOXOXO+

  • Hi there ladies,
Wow, what a mess those raccoons made! That popcorn is o.k. for their teeth, but not for ours. You wouldn't want to break a tooth. I think that would really hurt!
Get some box traps and set them up. The raccoons won't get hurt and you can move them elsewhere unless there is someone who would eat them. Waste not, want not I always say.
I'm starting to grow some fur back. The medicine has really upset my tummy. I now eat canned food from Dr. Becky. It sure tastes good. My tummy still gets upset, but not as bad as when I was eating my regular dry food. Had a great weekend. Hope you all did too.
    Your pal,
    Rebel

  • How about PSI: Paw Scene Investigation, "The Caper of the Popcorn Thief?" Remember, the evidence doesn't lie! I think you all should film this for your next webisode adventures.

Quick posting, I have to sit down and go back and read up on everyone but I hope all is well with everyone.

  • Hello ladies, Kirby here.
I’m late again today; Daddy and Mommy were gone this morning. I should come up there and GK and I could stand guard on the popcorn patch. On second thought, it is too late to save the crop for this year. Just feed what’s left to the chickens. Things are looking better for me. My hair on my tail is growing now and is about an inch long. Soon it will match the hairs I didn’t take out. I sort of looked like a lion for a while with one top tuft of hair on the tip of my tail. Mommy said I had to stay on the medication for a few more days until all the scabs are gone. Still have a few at the tops of my hips. I have a tip for everyone out there; don’t pull your hair out and gnaw on your skin. It takes weeks to come back in.
    Catch you later, Kirby.

  • Hi everyone,
Better late than not at all. I was so busy today. I can't believe I didn't get a chance to get on the comPuter till now and most of you are probably getting ready to go to bed. Sorry guys. And I won't be on till the afternoon tomorrow. Karen has to use the computer for a while in the mornng but I will post after she is done.
It is lonely on here at night. I am all by myself. Well, that is what I get for being so late.
I will give myself a time out. Hehehehehehehe
    Love to all,
    Maddox
