A Visit to Our Very Own Christmas Tree Farm

Posted by Francesca

In the spring of 2009, Martha thought it would be a good idea to plant a Christmas tree field at the farm and document it for her television show.  It was quite a big deal, as more than 600 trees were put in the ground that day.  I am happy to report that most of those little trees have grown very well, although they're not yet large enough to satisfy most Christmas tree shoppers.

Well, Sharkey, here we are at the Christmas tree field. It looks to be growing quite nicely.

Do you remember about 3-1/2-years ago when Jeff Sutherland from Elk Creek, VA came to plant this field with Martha?

On that day they planted 5-year-old saplings of white pine, Frasier fir, Caanan fir, Norway spruce, and blue spruce. Do you recollect how small the trees were back in April of '09? Maybe this photo will jog your memory.

Bounce forward to 2012 and I dare say, Sharkey, that if we sat here long enough, we would practically see this white pine growing inches taller! At this rate, a couple more years will be all that's needed.

This Frasier fir has a very pleasant fragrance. When ready to cut, it will have a nice shape, strong limbs, and great needle retention, making it an ideal Christmas tree choice.

Sharkey, the Caanan fir is another great choice for holiday decor, as it has soft, short needles and strong branches.

Plus, its pine smell is intoxicating. Hey, Francesca! Where are you going?

I'm checking out this row of Norway spruce. Can you believe that this fast-growing little tree can reach heights of 180-feet or more? It's the choice each year for the grand Christmas tree gracing Rockefeller Center in New York City.

And now I'm off to the last row of blue spruce, another excellent holiday choice. Ranging in color from bluish green to blue, this tree has extremely sturdy branches to hold all of your ornaments!

Francesca, in a few years when these trees are ready for cutting, you are going to make an excellent sales dog!

  • Hello ladies,
Wait till Karen sees these trees. They are the perfect size for her sock monkeys.
Last year she had a sock monkey tree and wreath for Christmas. She already got a box of more sock monkeys as a gift so she needs a bigger tree. Your trees look just the right size for the monkeys.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY Missy Chow. One year old today. I hope they hav a nice party for you and I also hope you get lots of good gifts.
    You must be so excited.
I will check back with everyone later
    Love to all,
    Maddox

Looking at those Christmas trees got me excited about Christmas!! I just checked there are only 74 days till the big guy in the red suit comes to my house I better get working on my list!! They sure are cute little trees and one of those would look so cute as my little tree - think I could come cut one down?

F & S did Martha wash those shirts in hot water? They look a little tight, just sayin..........

I'm so happy it's Friday I get to spend 2 days with mom then SN arrives - God help me :( However it is better than going to camp while they're away and on the bright side Nicole will be here for a week and I'll get lots of snacks :)

I hope you get lots of treats and have a great day.

  • Wow, wonder why it takes a tree so long to grow? Weeds come up from the ground lickity split!

The tree farm is sprouting up nicely.

I see F&S have their fall coats on.

It's really beginning to feel like fall here in NH. Leaves are changing colors and are beginning to drop already.

Time to oil up the ol' rake! :)

    Have a super weekend..

  • Hello Ladies & Glue Squad Buddies,
I must say, if I didn't know better I would think you were in Colorado with all those pine trees, especially the Blue Spruce. That is our state tree. It sounded good here Missy Chow, could you hear it there???? LOL!!! Rebel, isn't today shot #3 day? Have you been having lots of "cc" time with Mimi and Papa? Zoe, it's almost that bad word time, Super Nanny. Oh no!!!! Have you been busy on your secretary duties making the Glue Squad e-mail list? Cora Belle, maybe football player padding is the way to go. Then you can put your lovely vest over it and look stylin'. Abby, where are you and James Dean? Send your e-mail to the address on Zoe's Wednesday late post and we can have girl talk. Mimi, you too, and then I can send Rebel a get well card. Off to shoe shop today. A big job but someone has to do it. Hehehe Maddox, that sock monkey tree sounds fun. I have 3 trees. • Good morning ladies!
    First things first.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO OUR MISSY CHOW. Have a super day!
Great trees! We have a blue spruce in our yard and the birds love to make nests in it. There is another pine by the corner of the house that I like to use as a hiding place.
Hey, Lynn, you're right! It's shot #3 today. Dr Becky is also going to take a blood test. The medication is really making me loopy.
Zoe, are super nannies really that bad? Staying home while the folks are away doesn't sound so bad to me. It is sooo very noisy at the kennels & so nice & quiet at home. Anyway, everybody have a great weekend.
    Your pal,
    Rebel

  • Morning Girls & Glue Squad, The sun is shining, cool temperatures, the smell of fall is in the air, what more could you ask for today. Many thanks for all your birthday wishes, Lynn, I did hear it, great job singing :) . Not quite sure what Mom has planned, but I did hear her say, ride, Petsmart, toys and Dad mentioned treats, can't wait; plus Auntie Annie comes tonight too. Is it really 76 days until the man in the red suit comes, hope Mom starts her shopping soon. The Christmas trees are coming right along, you girls will be great in selling them and answering questions.

Cora-Belle, hope your shoulder is getting better. Zoe, be nice to Supernanny, maybe a surprise or two; but don't overdue it; besides you may be too busy with your secretary duties while your Mom & Dad are vacation. Rebel, good luck with your shot, hope you are feeling better. Where's everyone, Abby, James Dean, Kitty, Kirby Bear, Dudley Do Right, Baby Favor. Hi Lynn, Delia, Pam, Gail.

Back to the fresh air; will check back later - Thanks again for your wishes.

    Till next time,
    Missy Chow
    xoxo

  • Hi F,S,&GK+ Glue Squad, Hi, you wonderful girls, it's so nice of you to show us those beautiful Christmas trees at Martha's farm! Everyone of them looks marvelous and I do remember seeing Martha and Jeff planting them about 3&1/2 years ago-that was so fun to see! We have some fir trees and cedar trees in our yard and the cedar trees are great places for our hummingbirds to be safe in as well as our laurel bushes in the back yard! Sure was fun to hear from 6 of you buddies this morning and I loved all of your comments! Missy Chow, sure hope you have a delightful birthday today! Baby Favor, loved hearing the idea about Nose Butter yesterday! Hope you have a great time in Chicago with Mom! Cora-Belle, sure enjoyed your delightful comments yesterday and love your new items! I will bark for you! Did you get any rain yet? We are finally supposed to get some today and all of next week-haven't had any for about 82 days! It's only drizzling right now! Sure hope all of you have a great weekend and will check back later! Love, Dudley Do Right XOXOXO+

I think Mom had craft with drawal- no crafts for three days so will have to step it up this weekend. She had a great time but is not a city, concrete, closed window person.
Corabelle hope your shoulder feels better soon! Rebel, feel better! Zoe, good luck with your super nanny. Who do yopu want in the series?? Missy Chow, hope you get lots of presents, hugs and TLC.
