Pressing Yummy Cider

Posted by F&S

On yesterday's blog, you saw all of the apples that Sharkey picked.  Well, it was time to get busy and start using them.  A few years back, Martha bought a really neat cider press and that's exactly what we did - make cider!

Sharkey picked a lot of juicy apples so I guess it's time to get the cider press in motion.

Great, Franny! I've got the flywheel already cranking.

It's amazing how effortless it is to turn this flywheel.

So what is actually going on in the grinder box?

and in no time at all, those apples are chopped up! Just don't put anything in there that you don't want chopped.

So, Pete. You seem like an old hand at this. Do I turn this wheel next?

I'll just lower the press screw and apply pressure on the chopped apples.

Look at all that cider, GK! Doesn't it smell great? It even matches the color of your fur.

And won't the chickens be so happy eating all those pressed apples?

Say, Princess Peony - do you want to help us make apple cider?

You've got to be kidding me! I mean, have you ever heard of a cat making cider before? Honestly, you crazy dogs!

  • What a sneaky cat...Princess Peony checking out what's going on...

She might like cat nip soaked in apple cider! :)

What else will the apples be used for besides cider? Pies? Tarts? Cakes?

    Have a wonderful Wednesday..

  • Good morning everyone,
That apple cider looks delicious. Did you see all those baskets of apples? I wonder how long it took to make all of them into cider. And I wonder if you can mix different kinds of apples when you make cider. I think sometimes I wonder too much. hehehehe
Thank you all for your well wishes for Gibbs. He is doing fine. Back to his old self.
Rebel, I am so glad that Mimi had a safe trip and she is back home with you. I can picture you now jumping all around when she came home. James Dean, thank you for posting for Abby. What? Was she too busy? Are you her personal assistant? hehehehehehe
So James Dean, what do you like to do all day long?
Lynn, I am so glad that you are better. You must have been hurting big time. Hopefully they will fix you up so you are good as new. It finally stopped raining. We had no power but it is back on now. It would drive me crazy if I couldn't comment on the DW.
Ok Glue Squad, everyone went back to bed here so I may do the same.
    Love to all,
    Maddox

  • Hello Glue Squad friends & fur-friends!

  • Hello ladies, Kirby here.
What fun you are having making all that apple cider. I’m good and strong and could really press those apples good. We would need a really good name for it. Let’s see, made by two Chinese and two French dogs; could call it Liquor-de-Chow. We would have to ‘age’ it for a while so that it gets hard before we put it on the market. We could even include Martha; she is so good at marketing things. Anyway, it’s her trees after all, and her apples, and her press, and her; enough already my head is spinning. Say Delia, how about me visiting for a while? I just love those cool 38 degree mornings.
    Catch you later, Kirby.

  • Hello Ladies & G.K.,
Good to see all of you today. An apple a day keeps the doctor away. I love the cider press. It looks state of the art. We just have one tree. I can only imagine an orchard. Thanks Sonya for the sinus advise. I am starting to feel better already with the meds. Maddox, no power, you couldn't make it without the DW. Delia, I am like you, many German recipes. One passed with my Grandma years ago and I have never found another. An apple coffecake with sr cream dollups on top. Nothing I try is like Grandma's. I love Fall and apples and hearing of all your adventures. James Dean I bet Abby was helping at the hospital. Good to hear from you. You do need to fill us in on your activites. How is that Boxer in the hosp. doing? Glad Gibbs is doing better. Have a great Wednesday all.
    Hugs & smiles,
    Lynn

  • Good morning!
O.K. Princess Peonie. I can see that pressing cider is not for you. What a mess your fur would be if you got the sticky cider or apple stuff on you. Leave the work up to the girls and Pete.
All's back to normal at home, but there was frost on the roof of the house across the lake! Yikes! From 100 degrees to frost. Mimi had to share the chair with me this morning. I was chilly.
Lots of sunshine today! Have a great day everybody.
    Your pal,
    Rebel

  • Hi F,S,&GK+ Glue Squad, WOW! It's so great to finally see all three of you great friends, Princess Peony, and Pete! I love seeing the apple cider being produced and Mom remembers seeing the cider made on Martha's blog a while ago! All of you sure did have fun, didn't you!!! Have another great day and can't wait to see what you do next! Gail, I like Princess Peony also and she can be sneaky! Maddox, sorry your power was out and so glad you could comment again today-love reading all you tell us! Delia, 38 is pretty cold for Kitty to go out in the morning-hope it gets warmer! Its 56 here and foggy this morning! Kirby, the Chinese and French cider sounds interesting and yes, Martha is a great marketer! Lynn, Mom saw your comment on Martha's blog and loved it! Abby, James did a great job commenting for you yesterday! Sonya, sorry you have sinus infections, stay safe! Rebel, glad Mimi is back home and you really got excited just like I do! Cora-Belle, we get to go to Costco a lot, too and I love it! Great you have a wall to wall rug in the kitchen now, you lucky gal! Will check back later for more comments! Hope you all have a great day and stay safe! Love, Dudley Do Right XOXOXO+

  • Morning Girls, GK & Glue Squad, Those apples sure do look good and bet they will be used for alot of tasty goodies. I'm sensing that cooking apple aroma will be just around the corner for us; muffins, applesauce, pies, yummy.

Hope everyone is doing well. Maddox, sorry to hear about Gibbs, but happy he is doing well and back to himself. I've been trying to be good & enjoying the cooler weather. We had some heavy winds last night along with heavy rain; but I didn't hear anything.

Mom told me to stop being Picasso, who is that??? I don't think she appreciates my "nose dog art" on the storm doors especially after she cleans them. I can't help it, I'm trying to expand my artistic ability. hehe

Hi Lynn - glad you found out what is causing the migraines. Hope you are feeling better today.

Belated birthday wishes to James Dean

Got to run - will check back later.

    Till next time,

    Missy Chow
    xoxo

  • Hello Princess Peony, G.K., Sharkey, Francesca,Lynn, Dudley, Maddox and my glue squad friends-
What nice cider! We can just smell those apples.. and great work by Franny and Sharkey at the press with G.K. giving directions. Kirby, good idea for hard cider Liquor de Chow. Bet that will make everyone laugh today!
Lynn, I hope your antibiotics make that nasty sinus infection go away for good.Years ago mom had one in the bones of her face on the right side. Very painful so we are all sending you hugs!
Corabelle, those mochas and maple bars sound good! Just think the chiweenies could all make cider for you with a little supervision...Delia, hope you enjoy your new patio doors and that Kitty has wonderful adventures outside. Zoe hope your dad is feeling better today after our storms have cleared up here on the east coast.
Maddox, I am not Abby's assistant but a stealth feline writer infilterating the dog world to speak to my glue squad buddies. Abby decided to cuddle with her gran papa today so here I am with my giant persian paws on the keys..Princess Peony is so beautiful. I get brushed and combed every morning then watch the birds from my window and cuddle with mom as she reads and creates beaded bracelets, necklases, pays bills, eats breakfast and watch the home front while she runs, works and of course nap! I scare the squirrel away from the roof too!
OOPS- Abby coming, got to go- Purrs to all-James Byron Dean the persian

  • Thanks Missy Chow and all for your birthday wishes. I hope Gibbs feels much better real soon! Kirby, are you able to go around without a cone now? Have a great day all- James Dean

  • ..wow. making cider, you girls and G.K. are so tricky!..yes, it feels like fall here at night..and in the morning I can hear the red-belly squirrels yelling at the blue-jays while they are gathering cones for their winter enjoyment...seems the Chiweenies will be moving, I will miss the silly little guys, their people are selling their farm/ ranch and moving closer to their kids...thankfully their kids and grandkids love the Chiweenies..if not we would have captured them and held them for ransom..wonder what kind of doggies will move in..hope they like me!...Lucinda is getting big boxes and filling them with old blankets and making winter homes for the feral kitties here at the farm/ranch..like Princess Peony, they check out things from afar...hope all you fellow glue squaders have a great day..I must go eat a couple warrior prince cookies..Lucinda promised the Chiweenies she would share Lynns recipe with their kids..over and out, Cora-Belle

  • I am not going to lie-- all I can really do is look at that cider press and imagine squirrel and rabbit cider. It's getting cool here now. I had to put a sweater on for a little while yesterday. Once we get used to it being cooler, though, I'll finally get to take some nice long walks at some of our parks here that are just for dogs. That will be nice, since we couldn't go very often this summer because it was too hot for Frenchie dogs. Take care all!!!
