Looking for Autumn Flowers

Posted by F&S

Well, it's happened again!  Summer was officially over last Saturday when autumn marched in!  And pretty soon there will be piles of autumn leaves to play in.  That will be fun!  But for now, we can still enjoy lovely flowers because Martha has made certain that there are plenty of autumn blooms.

Even though the season is growing colder, there are still lots of lovely flowers blooming at the farm. These are anemone, a favorite among gardeners, as they bloom several times during the season.

Oh look, Sharkey! Anemones are growing by the greenhouse as well, and these are a lovely shade of pink.

They are a great flower for cutting as they can last up to nine days in a vase if they are cut right before the blossom opens! Of course, you must also change the water in the vase daily.

Speaking of cut flowers, why don't we check out the cutting garden and see what else is blooming?

I'm in here, Franny! Look at all of these blossoms!

Oh, I know what these are! They're zinnias! I remember them because they have such brightly pigmented petals. They make festive autumn arrangements.

That is one giant bee going about its business of collecting nectar and picking up pollen. Don't disturb it!

I love this shade of fuchsia! It's so bright and cheery on an overcast day like today. Hey Sharkey, take a look at this one over here!

They aren't the most fragrant flowers but I'm picking up a little whiff of something.

Sorry, Franny, I got distracted by these velvety lamb's ears.

Lamb's ears are grown more for the texture and color of its foliage than for its bloom Why, if they were my color, they would look just like my ears!

And look at this pink sedum called Autumn Joy. These flowers add a lot of color to the late summer and fall garden. Hey! I have an idea. Let's get some clippers and cut some blossoms to make a mixed arrangement for Martha!

  • Good morning girls,
Thank you so much for this post. The flowers are so pretty and so colorful. They are just what I need to cheer me up. Why you ask? Well, I will tell you why. It is because of that four letter word, RAIN.
Yes, it is raining once again. I don't understand. I am a good boy. I don't get into trouble. I am good for baths. I pick up my toys when I am done playing. Why can't I have deck time in the morning? I don't care if it rains later in the day but I enjoy laying on the deck in the morning and I can't do it yet again this morning becase it is raining. That is it. I am going to look online to see where I can get a scuba diving outfit in doggie size and then I won't care it if is raining. I might look like a fish out of water, but I don't care. That is what I am going to do today, look for my scuba outfit. What do the rest of you have planned for the weekend? I will check back later to find out.
    Love to all,
    Maddox

  • Good Morning F & S

What pretty flowers, did you ever think of chewing off the tops ;)

Rain here today YUK - I hate the rain. If I had a cap that I could wear when I have to run out back to do my business it wouldn't be too bad. I hate when those rain drops fall into my eyes and down my ears - not fun.

Tomorrow is dad's birthday. Mom is taking him somewhere special for dinner. I wish they would stay home so we could join in the dinner. Maybe I'll make him a special breakfast. OR maybe I'll make him a craft out of toilet paper :) I'll check on Martha's website and see if I can come up with any good ideas.

I was wondering is anyone interested in creating a Glue Squad email address list? Just a thought....

    Have a great weekend everyone!!

    Zoe

  • F&S, you are truly sophisticated Frenchieophiles! I'd like to see the festive autumn arrangement that you're making for Martha. I'm sure it'll be lovely. I'd like a few of the Lamb's Ears leaves for a Halloween costume I'm considering, which features a toga. The Lamb's Ears would be a nice touch. Hmm...

  • Hello Ladies & Glue Squad Buddies,
I just loved the post today. Your photos brighten my day. Maddox, maybe you can be like Dorothy in Oz and click your heals and get in the flower photos away from rain. Now I am enjoying the rain here because of the ichy summer. Maddox, you and Zoe, right off the bat make me smile. Yes, Zoe, I would love a Glue Squad e-mail list. I have been trying to send Abby my e-mail all week through different avenues. Still trying Abby, hang in there. Seeing those beautiful flowers and you girls reminds me of something and I must tell you. When Basil was a pup, one day I came home to find him on the dining room table, standing, smelling my vase of flowers. It was really cute, although we had to have an understanding never to do it again, and he didn't.

Cora Belle you will have fun with your guest soon, and Rebel I remembered today was shot day. It will help in the end. I have do doubt of you behaving during shots.

All the rest of my Glue Squad buddies have a great weekend, and I will check back later today. Sending hugs and smiles to all.
    Lynn
Zoe, Tell Dad Happy Birthday and I hope you have fun decorating for him. Hehehehe

  • Hello ladies, Kirby here.
It has been nice here now that the fall is here. Instead of highs in the 100’s, or 90’s, it’s only in the mid 80’s. No rain here for a while. We just had the wettest month in August but September has been one of the driest; go figure. Expecting rain this weekend so no outdoor time for me. Maddox, if you find your gear you won’t look like a fish out of water; you will look like a “waterdog.” Hehehehehe Just a little something to get the weekend started. Have a good and safe weekend all.
    Catch you later, Kirby.

  • Good morning ladies,
Super flowers! Sharkey, you're so silly sticking your head in the zinnias like that! Who took that picture of your behind? Tooo funnny!
Take heart, Maddox & Zoe, I'll send some sunshine your way. Hey Zoe, toilet paper art? It could be pretty. Mimi's birthday is on Sunday, the fam will be over for dinner and then they're all going to the Pork and Apple Festival at Clinton, IL. Clinton used to be famous for the copper bottomed Revere Ware pots & pans. No more about that, I might get into politics & that can get touchy.
Well, everyone have a great weekend. Until Monday..
    your pal,
    Rebel

  • Hi F,S,&GK+ Glue Squad, How fun that must have been checking out those beautiful autumn flowers at the Bedford farm! I love seeing all of them and the Lamb's ears look a lot like my ears, too! Sure would love to see the flower arrangement you two make for Martha and I know she would be thrilled! Hope you girls & GK have a delightful weekend! Maddox, maybe you could think of something to build to cover the deck so you can go out anytime even if it rains! Zoe, sorry about your rain, too! Hope your Dad has a nice Birthday tomorrow! Lynn, did you take a photo of darling Basil when he was on the table smelling the flowers? Sure would love to see one! Kirby, sorry you are getting rain, also! We haven't had any rain like we usually do since July 20th and it's extremely dry here and warmer than usual! Sure hope the rest of you buddies have a dry weekend and will check back soon to see how all of you are doing! Love, Dudley Do Right XOXOXO+

  • Wow F & S what lovely photos of you and the colorful flowers...really lovely!

I'm looking for my autumn flowers, but I'm afraid they all were a meal for a wild critter :-(

I just pulled up two huge sedum and threw them away, now you tell me they make good cut flowers? oh well they always pop up the next year from a leaf that has fallen, so have to wait for them to grow ;-)

Kitty has been running around like a mad-cat, like she had been sniffing catnip...so funny when she get's into a running start, she makes this noise that sounds like a car screeching or peeling off, this comes from her voice...so funny!

Hope everyone here is doing well or doing better, and a wonderful weekend to all.

    Hugs,
    delia & Kitty >(^, ,^)<

  • Zoe...a Happy Birthday to dad, hope he has a wonderful day!

  • Hello Francesca, Sharkey, Lynn, Zoe,Maddox,Kirby Bear, and all my friends-
What beautiful flowers today! Mom was really happy to see both you girls sniffing many different blooms. It is fun learning the names of the flowers too. Lamb's ears are so soft, they would make a good yoda costume addition for Malcom...
Scuba gear for Maddox, sounds good for today, raining buckets and I got a yummy dog cookie just for going out and being a good girl. Kirby, it must nice and warm with 80 degrees! Hope your tail starts healing and feels better this weekend.
Zoe, it would be very nice to have a glue squad e-mail list. Happy birthday to your Dad tomorrow and hope you find a fun tp craft project.....Baby Favor, it is great your mom volunteers to help bathe the shelter dogs. Lynn, we enjoyed your story about Basil puppy sniffing the vase of flowers. We think about him and Herman making jack o lanterns up on rainbow bridge. Mom bought a small pumpkin and it is on the back porch next to his window spot. Herman liked pumpkins so much she decided to carry on the tradition.
Jimmy is going to help mom make more halloween bracelets this weekend. I am going to petsmart tomorrow, even if it rains!!
Hugs and high paws from me and purrs from James Dean- Love ya- Abby

  • Happy Birthday to your Mimi for sunday Rebel!! Delia that story about Kitty and the nip nip was just too funny, jimmy made me come back to comment. Hugs to both of you!! Dudley, send some dry weather this way. wow- sky is starting to clear, maybe he has wizard powers.. have a great weekend! Mom is looking for me.. talking about heart worm prevention.. cheese time!! Abby

  • Those flowers are so pretty, Raven Baby! I have a story about farming, but it's on a much, much, much, much smaller scale than what your MarthaMom does. Mom decided to try to grow some vegetables on the upstairs porch in pots. Now I suspect your MarthaMom has some great tips on how to do that successfully, but Mom is not a 'read the directions' kind of person. Some things grew nicely but did not ripen, and some things didn't even grow. So her harvest consists of: one baby eggplant, 4 tomatoes. The end. But at least she tried, and next year she thinks she'll do a little patch in the back yard. Poor Mom did not get a green thumb. On the other hand, some petunias that she had in a pot last year came back just this week since we had finally had some rain, so that made her happy. I wish she would grow some rabbits, though. Or squirrels. I would be MORE than happy to help her...um... harvest those.

  • Hi Girls & Glue Squad, I know it's Saturday and didn't get a chance to post yesterday. :{ All the fall flowers and colors really say we are in the fall season. Mom has sedum and colorful mums in the yard plus a couple of her rose bushes are still flowering. So pretty up against a white fence. I was busy helping Mom get aready for a little b-day party for her aunt last night; really her official day is on Sunday when she turns 90. So between shopping, straightening up and getting things ready; phew, I was tired last night. But I did get a little ice cream, yum and was a good behavior too. We've had cloudy and rainy days the last couple of days so there was alot of inside time too plus nap time. But still had to keep an eye out for my local critters eating their acorns and there are plenty of time too.

Happy Birthday to Zoe's dad; Rebel's Mimi also.. - Rebel, hope you're feeling better too. Lynn, Good Idea, I think Mom would like the Glue Squad e/mail list. I hope she will make your Warrior Prince Basil cookies for me; you see next month I reach the ripe young age of "1". I sure hope she doesn't make me wear a silly hat - she had bunny ears for me Easter.

Off to nap - enjoy the rest of the weekend.

    Till next time,
    Missy Chow
    xoxo

  • HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ZOE'S DAD AND TO REBEL'S MIMI....
I hope the both of you had great food, delicious cake and friends to share it with.
    Love,
    Maddox
