It's Apple Season at the Farm!

Posted by Sharkey

The first day of autumn, which is officially called the Autumnal Equinox, falls on Saturday, September 22, just a few days away.  There are many things I love about autumn, especially the apple harvest when we bake pies and make cider.  We have many different varieties of apple trees at the farm and over the years, I have focused on a few that are my favorite.

I saw some really beautiful apples on the apple espalier the other day. Just a little further down the row.

See what I mean? These winesap apples are just gorgeous!

The texture of a winesap apple is nice and crisp when you bit into it, and it has a pleasantly tart flavor.

These are definitely my choice for cider!

I think I'll throw in a few green ones, too, for a little extra tartness. Now I'll go to the flower room and wash all the fruit.

Oh no! It's Laura Acuna at the sink! I don't want another bath! I haven't been playing with skunks!

Phew! Laura is just washing apples.

I still have a funny feeling about this.

I don't think Laura will notice one bit that I'm not here to help her. I'll just go check on the cider press.

  • Good morning everyone,
Sharkey, you are funny. You made a quick get away. Good for you. Laura is a very very nice lady but you never know the tricks that humans use to get us in the tub for a bath. hehehehehehehe
Rain, rain, rain. That is what my day will be. No deck time. I don't even want to put one little toe out on that wet deck.
I have a little tip for humans and animals. Be very careful with fur balls. Keep them away from your pets. We have a puppy, Gibbs, who was playing with his mother and he must have been pulling fur off of her when they were playing cause he had to go to the hospital to get an operation to see what was obstructing his intestines. He had a big fur ball wrapped around his intestines that was bunching them up. Can you believe that? A dog with a furball. I YI YI YI YI!!!!! The poor little guy. That had to be painful. But, he was named after Special Agent Gibbs on NCIS so he is a tough little guy and he should be coming home from the hospital today. I guess I will have to tell him all the negative things about eating fur. But after all this, I may not have to. hehehehehehe
    Love to all,
    Maddox

  • Hello ladies, Kirby here.
Apples are a good thing; it means fall is coming. My Mommy was raised on a farm which had apple trees. She tells me that she sat under the sorting table and would eat apples which fell from the table. Mommy says that an apple a day keeps the doctor away. Now I’ve been told that people often put strings of garlic around their necks; but an apple! Now I don’t like to visit my vet because of all the pocking she does. If I eat an apple each day, does that mean that I won’t have to visit anymore? Daddy is shaking his head no. It was a good thought; I’ll try something else. How about a peach? I think I’ll just take a nap after breakfast.
    Catch you later, Kirby.

  • Hi Sharkey!
Be careful around the sink! Boy, does Mrs Acuna have lots of apples to wash. Sure hope she has some help. Harvest time is always a lot of work, but worth it!
My Mimi is home! She was only gone 5 days, but I sure did miss her. I thought I'd jump out of my skin when she got home last night. I smelled a dog on her suitcase! She said that there was a really nice poodle named Torrie who liked to sit on my Mimi's lap!
Got my paws crossed for little Gibbs. He must have had a bad tummy ache!
Mimi will be going to the orchard for apples. She loves winesaps to eat & for pie and she always gets Cortland apples for applesauce. Yummmm. The kitchen sure smell good when apples a cooking.
We have cool & sunny weather this week. I'll send some to you all out East. Oh, Lynn, Mimi spent Thursday night in Denver! She was stuck at the airport for 3 hours yesterday. She says she could get around Denver airport blindfolded........LOL
    Til tomorrow,
    Your pal,
    Rebel

I am hoping that everyone has computer problems right now and you will post later. Ah, what the heck is wrong with me? The Glue Squad is not falling apart. It is computer problems. Well, get them fixed and let us know what you are up to. Don't make me come to your houses to check on you. I don't have enough money in my piggy bank to do all that traveling

  • Hi F,S,&GK+ Glue Squad, Sharkey, you are an adorable little girl and I love you to pieces! How fun that you did this blog for us today! It would be fun to have Franny and GK do fun blogs like this, too! You looked kind of scared in photos #7,8,&9 and glad Laura didn't give you a bath! Hope you had a peaceful day! Maddox, sure hope little Gibbs is doing a lot better and won't swallow fur again! My Mom told me that the same thing can happen to kitties so all of us need to be more careful! Kirby, your thoughts about eating apples to avoid a vet does sound good! Maybe I will try that, also! Hope the rest of you buddies will be commenting soon and I will check back later! Hope all of you have a great day! Love, Dudley Do Right XOXOXO+

  • Hello Sharkey, Delia, Lynn, Maddox,Rebel, Kirby, Kitty and Dudley,
How about those apples! We have wild apple trees in the field around the house and they smell so good! I loved seeing Sharkey inspecting those winesap apples. Ha- bet you thought I was Abby but its James Dean here taking over the computer with my big persian paws! Kitty, Delia, PURRS to you both too!
Maddox, hope little Gibbs gets well from his exploratory surgery soon. Painful so they must be giving him some medicine to feel better. Those nasty hair balls can affect many animals.Rebel- love your name- hope you are having fun with Mimi home. Kirby, going to the vet can be fun too, Abby goes with mom to work every day and she LIKES the doctor, staff, and people. They love her and give her lots of belly rubs.Lynn, are you getting ready for Halloween??
Rainy day and high wind gusts expected. Mom reading more in Anna Karenina before packing to go off to work. PURRS and PEACE to all my dog, cat and people friends- Love ya, James Dean the persian cat

  • Hello Ladies & Glue Squad Buddies,
Yes, I am late today but for good reason. The root of the migraines is a very, very, bad sinus infection, short of my brain. What would happen if I didn't have my brain, and couldn't blog to my favorite Glue Squad. Now on meds and back on track. My poor Basil Boy dealt with this his entire life. What a Warrior Prince.

Well, now on to the important stuff. Apples, I love, love and double love them. Honeycrisp are my go to apple of this season. Wonderful!! I love apples so much I have apple candles that smell like they are cooking up sauce on the stove. Sharkey I bet you were happy not to get a bath. Apples are good for doggies, so you stay when they are getting processed. Yum!!! Round up Franny and G.K. for the pickins'.

Maddox, so sorry about little Gibbs. I think I know what happened. Since he is a special agent, he had to conceal the evidence of his pulling Mom's fur, so swallow it. He thinks he is James Bond Dog. Hehehehe
And Rebel, I wish I would have known Mimi was going to be at the airport. I would have found her, and given her a hug and one for you. Next time let me know. Dudley I saw Mama Jan's comment yesterday on Martha's site. It was like friends meeting again. Now, I cracked up yesterday about all these Shagbark comments--a dance, someone on Scooby Doo. You Glue Squad are the best. You always bring a smile to my face. Kirby it seems there is no cone in cooler weather. I bet you are a happy man. Looking forward to hearing from all the rest of you later--hugs to all, Abby, Zoe, Chloe, James Dean, Kitty, Sonya, Delia, Poco, Baby Favor, and I know I probably forgot someone...so hugs and double hugs to all, Lynn

  • I've dated a few wine'saps' in my day! :)

Quick, run Sharkey, Laura may give you a dunk right alongside the apples.

    Where did the summer go?

How are the corn worms doing? Still nibbling away on the ears?

Actually, autumn in NH is incredible. By far my favorite time of year.

Leaves have begun changing here and there.

Big storm is a brewing for this evening.

    Happy Tuesday to all!
    gail

  • Those apples look gorgeous and delicious Sharkey. I'm surprised that Franny and G.K. weren't hot on your trail. Good thing you quietly hightailed it out of there before Laura got any ideas to trick you into a bath!

Rebel, glad to hear that Mimi is back home again. Zoe how is your Dad? Maddox maybe you can make little Gibbs happy and be his Tony for a little while. Lynn I suffer from bad sinus infections sometimes too. I swear by Mucinex! Everyone, I hope you are having a wonderful day.

  • ..I like apples,..hope little gibbs is doing okay..and Lynn, thank goodness they found the root of your problem..sinus infections are nasty...it is cooler today, Lucinda, James and I went to Costco, then off for mochas and maple bars..so it was a good day.. ...there is now wall to wall carpeting in kitchen..so this old dog can't ever slip on the kitchen floor again..thanks James and Lucinda...I must eat some snacks and take my meds..over and out, Cora-Belle

  • Those apples look good, Sharkey! Before I lived in Milwaukee there was a big apple tree in the back yard. Chloe and dear Demi used to enjoy eating the apples, although sometimes they did that too soon in the season and man oh man were there some tummy aches!! That tub where Laura was peeling potatoes looks a lot like the tub at the Humane Society where Mom goes once or twice a week to bathe puppies before they go get adopted, says Mom. I would steer clear of that thing too, Sharkey, for sure!
