G.K. and the Purple Finch and Trouble
Posted by Ghenghis Khan
I, Ghenghis Khan, love to bask in the sun out on the terrace. I also love to bird watch and from that vantage point, I have a very good view of the long line of feeders hanging from the eaves on the backside of the carport. I spotted something a bit unusual the other day, so I went to investigate.
What is that I see below the bird feeders?
Why, it appears to be a little bird sitting on the sprinkler. I think it's a purple finch.
Hi there, little purple finch. Did you know that Roger Tory Peterson, the famous ornithologist, described you as a "sparrow dipped in raspberry juice?"
I'd say that Mr. Peterson was quite accurate with that description. You must be a male because of the pinkish-red on your head and breast. Female purple finches have no red.
But why, little finch, are you sitting so low to the ground? Is there something wrong?
Why, that's not too graceful a flight. Ahh! I think I'm beginning to understand.
You are a fledgling, a young bird learning to fly.
Well, it's better for you to be up there, rather than on the ground.
However, may I make a suggestion? If you're going to make all of that effort to fly, perhaps you should aim for a feeder that isn't empty.
You can make it! You can make it!
See? All it takes is a little confidence.
Now that's more like it! It's always better to perch where there's food.
Now, may I make another suggestion? I think you should earnestly improve your flying skills because hanging around on the ground isn't safe for little birds.
It's a wild world out there, purple finch!
