G.K. and the Purple Finch and Trouble

Posted by Ghenghis Khan

I, Ghenghis Khan, love to bask in the sun out on the terrace.  I also love to bird watch and from that vantage point, I have a very good view of the long line of feeders hanging from the eaves on the backside of the carport.  I spotted something a bit unusual the other day, so I went to investigate.

3 Hi there, little purple finch. Did you know that Roger Tory Peterson, the famous ornithologist, described you as a "sparrow dipped in raspberry juice?"

I'd say that Mr. Peterson was quite accurate with that description. You must be a male because of the pinkish-red on your head and breast. Female purple finches have no red.

Why, that's not too graceful a flight. Ahh! I think I'm beginning to understand.

You are a fledgling, a young bird learning to fly.

Well, it's better for you to be up there, rather than on the ground.

However, may I make a suggestion? If you're going to make all of that effort to fly, perhaps you should aim for a feeder that isn't empty.

You can make it! You can make it!

See? All it takes is a little confidence.

Now that's more like it! It's always better to perch where there's food.

  • Hello GK, my handsome son. You look great. That was so nice of you to help that little bird. I hope he will be alright. I think he just has to get stronger and eating the bird seed will help. Hopefully that will happen before the cats get to him. Speaking of cats, how are those little ones doing? We didn't see them for a while. I bet they ate getting big.
Geez, Friday already. The week goes by so fast. What does everyone have planned for the weekend? I can't wait to hear. I will check back later.
    Love to all,
    Maddox

  • "I think I can I think I can"..

Aw, GK what a perfect coach your are to help that that fine feathered friend.

  • Hello G.K. & Glue Squad Buddies,
What a great Friday it is----G.K. is helping this beautiful finch with his great advise. You look mighty fine these days too guy. I have never seen a purple finch. Yellow ones, yes. I heard on the news last night of the songbirds starting their migration south, so enjoy the birdies while you can G.K. Speaking of news, did you all see the pig that rescued the goat from the pond at a zoo? I never knew pigs were so smart and such fast swimmers. Cora Belle don't be too sad about the Chiweenies moving. I think I see a new neighbor of a 16 year old male Cattledog in your future. Thank you all for the wonderful wishes for my birthday and it was a grand time indeed and today is the best day in weeks--meds working, no headache. I was up at 3:30 and feel like a young chickie. Have a great weekend to all you cutie pies and will check back later to see of your adventures.
    Hugs & smiles,
    Lynn

  • Hi G.K.
Good job buddy. Mimi & I have a finch feeder, too. We get yellow & red finches and sometimes for a real treat, an indigo bunting stops by. It sure can get colorful at the feeder. You are a good coach. Maybe you can help keep the kitties away from the young birds.
Hey, Lynn, Happy belated birthday. We're so glad the medicine is helping take your headaches away.
I'm going to see Dr Becky today. I am losing my fur! I'm all itchy, too. I already have a bald spot on my chest. I had a warm oatmeal bath last night & that helped me sleep a little better. I'll let you know on Monday what I got into.
I did see the pig help the baby goat! That was fantastic!
    Have a great day everybody.
    Your pal,
    Rebel

  • Hello ladies, Kirby here.
Well it looks like GK has gone to the birds. Hehehehe It’s always nice to help smaller animals make their way in this world. While you were there you protected the little bird from those cats. I’ll bet the cats knew that bird was on the ground; they seem to know things like that. Speaking of cats, Mommy is still feeding that little one but I am not allowed to get near it. I guess I’m too fast for it so Mommy protects it from my chase. Oh well, the week has rushed by and now the weekend. Keep safe everyone.
    Catch you later, Kirby.

  • Hi F,S,&GK+ Glue Squad, I am so happy to finally see more of you today handsome GK! You certainly did a great job taking good care of the young purple finch sitting on the ground and getting him to fly up to that food container to be safe! Seeing the look on Princess Peony's face was a bit scarey! Hope that little finch has learned to stay off the ground! Hope to see you again real soon! Maddox, hope you are having a great day! Gail, hope you have a great day, also! Lynn, so happy you are feeling better and that you had a great Birthday celebration! Will check back later to read more comments! Hope all of you buddies have a wonderful weekend! Love, Dudley Do Right XOXOXO+

  • Hi GK & Glue Squad-It was very nice of you to take time and guide that little birdie back to the feeders. It won't be long before he is fluttering around just like the other birds. Good thing you kept watch to make sure no one pounced on him.

Maddox, thanks for the words of wisdom - I've been doing pretty good since my last "ruff" experience with dad. When they see me start, especially the heavy breathing, they know what's coming; but then Mom & Dad gives a stearn NO, maybe two and reaches down to give a little back rub and I start to settle down - guess you can call that c/c time, right Lynn??? After that, I can go settle down for a while or check for critters from a distance.

Lynn, glad you had a great celebration and happy to hear you are feeling much, much better. :)

What's everybody up to? Hope Gibbs & Abram are doing okay. Abby & James Dean is Mom working this weekend? Dudley Do Right, Cora-Belle, Rebel, Zoe, Kirby Bear, are you staying out of trouble?

    Have a nice weekend.

    Till next time,
    Missy Chow
    xoxo

  • So sorry for your itching and baldness Rebel. I know Dr. Becky will figure things out. That oatmeal bath sounds like Mimi is caring for you first class. Oh, and I forgot to tell Kirby that this incident with Dad must have been an alien Kirby. I used to tell the kids that, Kirby, when they were young and didn't behave or something, just that the alien kid had come, and I never wanted to see that alien again. So no more alien Kirby. Daddy loves you so much. Take care all.
    Hugs,
    Lynn

  • Hi G.K., Lynn, Princess Peony, Dudley, Maddox,Missy Chow and all my glue squad friends-
