Finding Wild Mushrooms in Maine

Posted by F&S

Today, on Martha's blog Ryan McCallister, the Bedford gardener, is featured prominently showing how to propagate hydrangeas from cuttings.  We got to thinking that maybe we should feature Ryan on our blog, too, and pulled these photos from our archive, taken during one of Ryan's visit to Skylands, our home in Maine.

After all, we are in Maine, you know.

Let's do it then, Sharkey! Hey, G.K. Do you want to come along? You can't sleep all day, you know!

Yes, girls! I am quite eager to join you and you can rely on my excellent nose for the hunt!

Why don't I take pictures with my Canon G12 camera so we can show Ryan our finds and post the photos on our blog?

Let the hunt begin! Let's start sniffing!

Hmmm, I'm not picking up a trace of fungi around here.

Girls, maybe we should venture out into the woods.

With all this fog, the woods look a little eerie, but I think we'll have more mushroom luck in here.

That book Ryan had said that mushrooms like to grow in cool, damp places. How about we search in this drainage area?

Well look at that! This is a fine specimen of a Bracket fungi, which are mostly found on trees, living or dead! Mushrooms are a type of fungi, as well, so I have a very good feeling about this!

EUREKA! A crop of toadstools right near the bracket fungi! Good idea to venture into the woods!

This one looks like it's dancing! Just look and do not touch! That book said that many mushrooms can be mind altering or deadly! We don't need that! Let's settle for a photo.

  • ..wow 2 blogs in one day!!...I know nothing about mushrooms, except we get them at the store...thanks for the photos and info..over and out, Cora-Belle

  • I give up. I had a whole big comment on here and once again my fat paws hit the wrong thing and it all went away. Now I don't have time to do it over cause I am going with Karen to one of her doctors and we have to leave in a few minutes as it is over an hour away.
I will be back. Geez. When it rains it pours and right now it is thundering too
    Hehehehehe
    Later,
    Maddox
PS - I can't wait for Karen to see this post. She LOVES mushrooms
    Love you guys

  • Hello ladies, Kirby here.
Mushrooms and toadstools are strange plants. I don’t have many in my yard but the neighbor has plenty growing in their grass in the bright sunlight. I guess that the lawn mower sends those spores all over the place. They seem to pop up after every rain and last for about three days. It won’t be long before the leaves start turning and those dreaded balls start falling from those sweet gum trees. Nasty little things when you step on them. It keeps one busy just getting them out of my back yard. Oh well, they do keep things cooler during the hot summer. I think I’ll have my morning nap now.
    Catch you later, Kirby.

  • Good morning ladies & Ryan,
Good hunting. We get toadstools in our yard sometimes and there is always something growing in a fresh batch of mulch. Sometimes that stuff is really stinky.
Hey Kirby Bear, our neighborhood has sweetgum trees, too. What a mess. Some houses in the really old neighborhood close to downtown actually have mulberry bushes. That's really a mess. One year Mimi picked up some of the sweetgum pods & took a lesson from Martha. She spray painted them & tied name tags to the stems & tied that to napkins so folks would know where to sit. I know where I sit without a place tag. LOL Under the table waiting for oopses. Right everybody?
    Your pal,
    Rebel

  • Hello Ladies & G.K.,
Good to see all of you helping Ryan hunt for mushrooms. I have never seen so many. We get a few here, but you all probably see more where it is humid. They are so cool looking. Thanks again for the education. Ryan is just like Uncle Carlos and looks after the 3 of you---lucky kids. Abby, glad to hear Mom enjoyed the concert. You are definitely in flower power mode. And Cora Belle, those Chiweenies and now the kids with them, just crack me up. Between you and Maddox I always laugh. Maddox, so glad Karen is home and hope her doctor's appt. goes well today. Now we just need to hear from Missy Chow, Chloe, Zoe, and you dears Rebel and Dudley. Kirby, stay cool and stay away from tail trouble. Zoe, hope your Dad is recovering well, and you and Mom are resting too.James Dean and Kitty, I bet Fall is fun for you, playing in all the leaves. Hi to Sonya, Gail and Pam. Have a great day.
    Hugs & smiles,
    Lynn

  • Hi F,S,&GK+ Glue Squad, WOW! I love this latest blog with Ryan and GK in it! It was also fun to see Martha's blog today about Ryan propagating her hydrangeas at Bedford! He sure is a great guy! All of you look absolutely great in these photos and I love the information you shared again! As usual, it's fun to learn something new everyday! Cora-Belle, you sure have fun no matter who comes to visit your place and I love your reactions! Maddox, I am so proud of you for all you do for us and especially all you do for Karen! Hope her Dr. visit goes well-bless her and give her a big hug! Kirby, we have lots of small mushrooms and toadstools in our yard and Mom always picks them and gets rid of them so I won't chew on them! Can't wait to hear more comments today from the rest of you! Sure hope you all have a great, safe day! Love, Dudley Do Right XOXOXO+

  • Hello Dudley, Francesca, Sharkey, Maddox, Karen, Lynn, Rebel and my buddies-
So nice to see Ryan helping out G.K. and the frenchie girls on a fun mushroom Hunt! Timely since we have so many varities around here. Those woods looked a little spooky with the fog, half expected a vampire to come out. I love looking at the toadstools and thinking about the children's story about the brownies who were kind of little fairy people who used acorns for buckets, mushrooms as tables, etc. Maddox will think I've been sniffing the mushrooms too much, but still I meditate.
Karen, hope you are feeling much better and that your dr. appt. went well. Corabelle, tell those chiweenies to back away from the porcupine! Kirby Bear, we are going to look up sweet gum trees- never seen one. Rebel, are you playing under the table? Kitty and delia hope all is well with you in cat land. Lynn, thanks for your kind comments about my zen dog mood. Life is precious so enjoy the moment! Love and peace- Abby

  • Those mushrooms all look very interesting. There were mushrooms up in Pinewood when we were there, but I don't think any of us took any pictures.
I have very sad news to tell. My friend and sister of the three years I have lived in Milwaukee went to the Rainbow Bridge yesterday. Demi was a very sweet girl, although she could be pretty imperious when she wanted to be. She is probably some kind of distant cousin of yours, Raven baby, but I couldn't quite figure out the ins and outs-- she left when FirstMama stil lived in Mendota. We didn't always get along, but I admired her fighting spirit and her fashionista sensibilities (she was the very definition of the phrase 'pretty in pink'.) She had a horrible thing called DM, and it made it harder and harder for her to walk. Her little body just started to give out, and Mom and Dad took her to the vet who sent her along. I am SO glad she got to go to Pinewood and see FirstMama and Daddy Steve one last time. She was too tired to chase chipmunks, so I did that for her. We will miss her very much.

  • back again..I have a few things to say..but first Baby Favor I am sorry for your loss..now I am a bit peeved with the woman who wrote yesterday that Martha gave the wrong response where to learn about dogs..nothing wrong with learning about dogs at your local pet store..then with that knowledge you can choose the breed you would like and go forth from there...and a lot of people choose rescue dogs..they just needed info to decide what breed...whew..had to get that off my chest!...sweet gum trees..never saw one..I am in big fir tree country..Zoe, how is your dad?..Maddox good job taking Karen to the dr..hope her check-up goes well..James is at the VA hospital for tests today..so Lucinda and I are holding down the fort..over and out, love, Cora-Belle

  • Bonjour. From Paris! F& S I have seen many of your relatives I tried saying hello but in good old fashion French way the snubbed me...miss my Kitty! I have a great deal of catching up to do here...Love to all my friends here! Francesca, Sharkey and G.K. Au revoir, delia

  • Good Evening F & S

Mushroom hunting - I don't think so. I'm not into mushrooms that is one food when dropped on the floor I'll walk right by.

So I'm friggen exhausted from being a nurse. Dad better get his butt better soon so I can get back to TP duty and raising hell at the house. I have to report he is doing very well, big nasty cut down his throat but on the mend. Thank the good Lord - I'm beat and so is mom. We had people in and out of the house for 2 full weeks - enough!! I just want to relax, let a little gas go and not have people around, mom feels the same way.

I hope everyone is doing well I'll have to catch up on the posts later this week I haven't had time to do anything!!!

    Zoe
