Having a Look at a Vintage Automobile

Posted by Francesca

As you may know, we've been spending a good deal of time at Skylands, our home on Mt. Desert Island in Maine.  There are so many wonderful places and things to explore and one day, we wandered over to the garage building and had a look at a very special automobile.

Hello! I'm sitting in a very special vintage 1958 car in the garage at Skylands. You may know that Edsel Ford built Skylands, but he also was responsible for a line of Ford cars, called Edsels.

This 2-door 6-passenger station wagon is called a Roundup and only 963 were produced. Martha is very lucky to own one.

There are many innovative features including a push-button teletouch transmission located in the center of the steering wheel, something now found in many modern sports cars. However, back then, this feature was trouble-prone.

I am now in the backseat and as you can see over the bench seat, the interior is quite spacious, with plenty of room for cargo.

Edsels were manufactured between 1958 and 1960 and this Roundup was only made in 1958. It's the only Edsel 2-door wagon available during any model year.

Sharkey, nearly 50 years after being discontinued, fewer that 6,000 Edsels survive. Don't you feel special sitting in one?

Don't you just love the taillights? It even has a very appropriate license plate. Hey, I have an idea! What do you say about a little drive into town? You know this car always gets a lot of attention.

Come on, Sharkey! I'll do the driving! We can go and grab a cup of Joe!

  • Good Monday Morning

Thank you all for the birthday wishes I got lots of treats it was great.

F & S my mom has an old car it's a 1965 Red Mustang. Dad restored the entire car, it was my grandpa's he bought it new for grandma and when he died he wanted my mom to have it. Dad gets upset because mom won't drive it she said it's like driving an 18 wheeler. It looks real pretty sitting in our garage.

Well I can't chat too much we have a house full of family. Today mom is taking the girls shopping so I'll just relax by the pool with the guys.

Dad has surgery on Thursday so I'll just read up about his recovery time.

  • What cool wheels, F&S! Woohoo! Mom and I love the color, design, and tail lights! Make sure Martha doesn't burn rubber too often in it!

  • Hello ladies, Kirby here.
I just love old cars and the history behind them. I really do like traveling in old cars and trucks. I even like traveling in new ones too. Could say that I like traveling in just about anything that moves. I haven’t tried a bicycle as of yet. Those two wheels seem like they would be a problem for my short legs. Short; they reach the ground don’t they? That’s all that’s necessary. One could say I like the open road. Been on a few closed roads too; that was fun. Hehehehehe
    Catch you later, Kirby.

  • Hello Ladies & Glue Squad Buddies,
Wow what a beautiful vintage car!! I guess I am vintage, as I was born in 1957. I can just see you girls and G.K. tooling around with Mama Martha in town.

I saw lots of animals at the state fair, from oriental roosters to bunnies and pigs. What a showing. It was a horrible hot day, and we learned if we ever go back to go at night. Oh well, I can cross it off my bucket list.

The big cottonwood that split on the powerline is all taken care of by the guys and a friend. Glad that mess is gone. A new week, new work, and new fun. Hope everyone had a great weekend and will be anxious to hear of your adventures. Little Lola I sure miss you and Gran, let us know sometime how things are doing.

    Hugs & smiles,
    Lynn

  • Beep Beep....

Frannie looks very at home behind the wheel. Don't forget to hang your paw out the window as you are buzzing down the highway! :)

    Happy Monday to all..gail
p.s If you want we can drag race our Edsels! :)

  • Hi F,S,&GK+ Glue Squad, You two sweet girls sure did have fun at Skylands, didn't you?! I love these photos today about you being in Martha's beautiful Edsel-2 door wagon! Bet you had more fun in it then in the Kawasaki! I love it, too and my Mom has a red Ford Ranger she got in 1998 and it is still a great pick-up! Did GK like it, too or was out wondering some place else?! Sure miss seeing him, too! I finally got to the vet on Friday and I am in great shape and health! My only problem is I need to loose some weight because I love too many treats! Sure hope all of you are safe and that none of you are near that hurricane down south heading for the Gulf of Mexico! Hope you all have another great day! Love, Dudley Do Right XOXOXO+

  • Hello Franny, Sharkey, Maddox,Lynn, Kirby Bear, Birthday girl Zoe and all the glue squad,
Wow what a nice car! I like the color and fancy tail lights. Looks like mini road trip time for the frenchies. Speaking of road trips Mom is going to Massachusetts on Thursday for a few days. I will stay with my grandma and grandpa and be really spoiled. Lots of cuddle and comfort time, snacks and no work. whew. Today back to see the dog boarders- around 36 now. Cora belle you would be proud of my barking skills. Maddox hope you had a good weekend full of meditation. Missy Chow, our red sox are now being rebuilt- very confusing, not even the end of the season. Lynn, did you have fun at the fair?? Rebel, hope you had fun chasing those ducks. Dudley, we send our hugs to you. Jimmy Byron Dean sends his purrs to Delia, Kitty and Sonya. Brush time for him... off to nap before work, Abby

  • Wow, that car is awesome. Awesome awesome.
Does Martha drive it around in Maine? I can't stay on long cause Karen is in the hospital and I have to help Mammy Jean run the house while she is not here. First they told her she had pneumonia and then today they said it is a real bad virus.
    Love to all,
    Maddox

  • Hey F & S beautiful vintage car. You two sure do ride around in style. Happy belated Birthday Zoe. A house full of family? more food to be dropped on the floor for you and the Labs I hope.

I hope everyone had a lovely weekend.

  • Good morning ladies,
What a great car for you two! Perfect color, too. How cool that Gail has an Edsel Ranger. Mimi loves old cars. She & Papa have had their share. Mimi says Papa was driving a new 1965 Mustang when they started dating. It was a convertible, too. That made him a real "catch".
We had a big rain last night and sunny today.
Hope everybody had a good weekend. Til tomorrow.
    Your pal,
    Rebel

  • Hello All & Especially Thinker Maddox,
I know you and Mammy Jean will take the best care of Karen, but let her know her Daily Wag family is hoping she gets well and out of the hospital soon. I wish I had one of those Maple Bars of Cora Belle's to send her. Get well soon.
    Hugs,
    Lynn

Maddox keep us posted on our buddy, Karen, please pick a flower and take it to her from me, the Cora-Belle, thank you.

  • Hi Girls & Glue Squad, Early evening posting today, really behind on my greetings to everyone today. Mom's on vacation this week and you'd think I'd get early computer time, not today. F & S, really cool for both of you to sit and check out the Edsel, must have been fun. Maddox, hope Karen is feeling better and will be home soon, Zoe, glad you had a nice birthday, enjoy your company this week, you never know what kind of treat will be dropped. Abby, not so sure about the Red Sox, but getting ready for the Pats, won't be long now. Too bad your mom and my mom can't meet while in MA. Dudley, glad to hear your appt went well; Mom said I go to vet's tomorrow morning for a shot;not so excited about that, however, the techs & dr are nice. Mom & Dad are taking bets on how much I weigh now, I do like to eat; but I think I look pretty good for a pup of 10 mos. Just thinking, if I wiggle on the scale, and can't stay still (and that's not difficult to do), they may record the first solid number that appears, um......might work ;)

Lynn, sounds like you had fun at the state fair. Hi Kirby Bear & Rebel.

    Till next time,
    Missy Chow
    xoxo

  • Vintage car is a really looking very nice and well impressive. The past story of car is really pleasant, but the past story will lead us towards the development and modified the new car with new expectation. Thank you so much for your nice share.

  • Oh wow, what a great car! You girls look good in it!

we use to have 2 '55 Chevies, wish we had them now.

    ~d

  • Hey-hey Francesca & Sharkey! It's Mr. Tug of Apache Trail here, Boston Terrier from Connecticut. We have the same doctor-- the fabulously cray-cray Dr. Marty, but we've never met at his office. LOVE your Edsel wagon-- those tail lights are KILLER! Did not know they made a model called The Roundup-- LOVE that!!! So Western-- I could just see that flying down the desert road to Frank Lloyd Wright's Taliesen West!!! I've always wanted to drive a car with Teletouch transmission, but Sean won't let me drive at all!!! See you! ---TUG.
