The Importance of Water

Posted by Francesca

Despite the hot weather, I’ve been feeling quite energetic these days.  Of course, I’ve been drinking a lot of water to keep myself hydrated, which got me thinking about all of the plants out in the gardens and wondered if they were getting enough water?

Hey Sharkey! It's such a beautiful day. I feel like taking a spin around the farm in the Kawasaki. What do you say?

Oh, I don't know, Francesca. I am quite comfortable lounging beneath this tree. Maybe GK will go with you?

Move along, Francesca. I'm not budging from this spot for awhile!

Sharkey is snoozing outside and GK is asleep in the kitchen! I guess they're observing the dog days of summer. They're no fun at all! I guess I'll take the Kawasaki out for my own adventure today! What should I do?

Oh I know, I'll go on sprinkler patrol and make sure they're all working properly and see that nothing gets over-watered or under-watered!

These boxwoods are being nicely watered. Boxwoods typically need watering about once a week, or more often if it's especially hot or if it's especially dry.

And I can't forget about the sprinklers by the netted blueberry pergola! The blueberries are starting to ripen and need plenty of water right now to become nice and plump. We wouldn't want them to shrivel on the bush before we can pick them!

However, I think the blueberries have had sufficient water. Over-watering can cause the fruit to split. Generally speaking, plants should receive about the equivalent of 1-inch of rainwater per week.

We wouldn't want to damage our plants or waste water now, would we?

  • Hi Frannie...thanks for the tour..and I must say you look very chipper these days..Baby spotted fawn out in the yard and a bunch of baby coons...they are too cute to bark at and scare..so I just came back in the house..I'll wait till they grow-up and then bark at them...suppose to be hot here tomarrow..James has VA appointment, so Lucinda and I are going to lounge around and do nothing, maybe we can dip our toes in the river..if the goofy chiweenies come by, they will have to wear their life vests..those guys don't know anything about water...wish all of you could come by and join us..so I will act naughty for all my glue squad buddies..over and out, Cora-Belle

  • Good morning Francesca,
See all the things you get to see in the morning while those two sleepy heads are still resting. I didn't realize how important it is, the watering of plants. I guess they have to be checked on a regular basis to see what they need. Good job Franny.
Speaking of sleepy heads, where is everyone?
I will check back later. I am headed to the deck to take a nap. hehehehehehe
    Love to all,
    Maddox

  • Hello ladies, Kirby here.
I guess I’m one of those sleepy heads. Thunderstorms last night and I didn’t sleep very much. I don’t know how Daddy can do it; slept right through one. It was a little one but still it was a storm. The plants aren’t the only thing which needs water in the hot summertime. Think of those little birds; they need lots of water too. And don’t forget about the bees; they need water. This week has been bass ackward; it’s the weekend already. Be safe and cool everyone out there.
    Catch you later, Kirby.

  • Hello Franny,
I know why you want to go checking on the water, even if G.K. and Sharkey don't.....all that time locked up in your cone. You aren't letting a moment slip you by. You look the best I have seen you in ages. Keep it up. You get yourself a drink--#1 looks like you are thirsty. I have been working on Christmas cards all week for my fall shows. It's Christmas in July--hahaha! Cora Belle you keep those Chiweenies on their toes, and Maddox stay cool, and Kirby my husband feels the same way about the week being all mixed up with the holiday in the middle. Abby are all the holiday boarders gone now, and what about Chloe, Zoe, and Missy Chow--are you girls staying out of trouble, so no time outs? Dudley and Rebel, I sure hope none of our smoke in Colorado has bothered you. High Park fire is 100% contained and now others are letting people back that were evacuacted. Kitty, please let us know how you are doing. I know you must have springs in those paws, but don't hurt yourself jumping.
Hugs to all and have a great weekend,
    Lynn

  • Morning Girls, GK & Glue Squad, Franny, you did a great job checking the plants, sprinklers and amount of water they all should get. Just remember, when Sharkey & GK want to go and explore and want you to go along, well, you know what I'm saying..hehe..Hope everyone had a great 4th. It was quiet at our house; however I DID get to counter surf and even showed Mom & Dad what I retrieved, not a good move on my part..but that hamburger got cooked for me anyway. It was good too! Lynn, didn't quite get a timeout for that one. They are not too happy either when they take me walking these days, I still pull pretty hard especially when a bird is near or at squirrel crossings..distractions is my weakness even the trainer said that last week. What's a girl to do, I ask???? I heard Mom on the phone yesterday with the vet's office, sounds like something is brewing in a couple of weeks, not sure that I will be toooo happy with that visit. ;(

Another hot weekend is just around-better stay close to the a/c and "try" to stay out of trouble.

    Wishing everyone a great weekend.

    Till next time,

    Missy Chow
    xoxo

  • Hi F,S,&GK+ Glue Squad, Miss Francesca, you look so beautiful and healthy in these photos and how great that you were checking all around the farm to see about everything that needs water when it's so hot there! Sure hope all three of you are staying cool!!! It's finally summer here and it's getting up in the 70s and 80s and I enjoy it but sometimes it gets too hot! Sure hope all of you Glue Squaders are staying cool especially where it's in the 90s and 100s where some of you live! Hope all of you have a terrific weekend! Cora-Belle, you are so kind to those baby animals! Will check back later to read more of your comments! Love, Dudley Do Right XOXOXO+

  • Hey everybody!
Keep up the watering! We are on a voluntary water usage watch. We're watering but only as needed. Not to complain (cause I really don't dig the cold winter) but this is too dang hot even for a chihuahua!
Hey Cora Belle, I agree with Dudley, you're a good girl.
Lynn, we've had colorful moons & sunsets. I've heard that it maybe from your forest fires. One moon the other night was big & orange just like a harvest moon! It was so pretty. Did anyone else have a moon like that?
    Stay cool everybody!
    Your pal,
    Rebel

  • Hello Francesca, Sharkey, G.K.,Rebel, Maddox, Missy Chow and all my glue squad buddies,
Franny you look wonderful in today's photos and it must be great to go around the farm sans cone! Good idea to check on watering all the blue berries and plants. Mom waters the plants at the animal hospital and even sweet talks to them. I just ignore plants myself except I enjoy sniffing flowers. Mom has to keep me away from the bees!
Rebel, we had a huge dark yellow moon the other night. Mom said it looked like the one in Moonstruck.
Missy Chow, that hamburger sounded so good!! No worries about the vet appointment.
Maddox, you must have enjoyed seeing your father lounging on the cool kitchen floor. Kirby, I hope you are staying cool and that your tail feels better. Nicky and Kris I hope you are having lots of fun playing with catnip toys. Cora belle, have a great time at the river with Lucinda and the wild chiweenies. Lynn, we actually have MORE DOGS at work now boarding post holiday. A vocal huskie that Mom loves, lots of boxers and a super pretty dachshund. My pug buddy is there too. And of course our crazy parrot Shaggy, the disco queen. Hope everyone has a COOL weekend, after all we are the COOL GLUE SQUAD!
High paws and hugs- Abby the beach loving frenchie pug

  • I hope everyone had a great, safe 4th of July. You are really looking good again these days Franny. So glad to see you back to your old self again. I kind of have to go along with Sharkey and G.K. regarding relaxing in the shade. Here in Chicago it's a whopping 100 degrees again so shade is the only way to play.

Have a great weekend everyone stay cool!

  • Gee, what's up with all the 'loafers'! :)

Sharkey sure looked comfy under the shady tree.

I rely on Mother Nature to water the lawns. If she is on a hiatus, then I'll schlep out the hoses and do a quick once over! :)

We are in a warm spell right now in NH.

    Stay cool my furry friends!

  • F & S you two are such good helpers, stay cool! :-)

Glad to see everyone is safe from the festive 4th of July....our weather has been horrid, hot, damp, heavy air, and some strong wind, just plain miserable.

Kitty flops down on the wooden floor when she comes in to cool off. I can't breath when I'm outside and with my back hurt it's twice as miserable...

We went to Milwaukee today, it was only 76 degrees and a nice cool wind, we came home to 94. Rain is needed badly, all the crops & plants are stressed...OK so much for the pity party.

    Till the next post..
    Hugs to all,
    delia & Kitty =^. .^=

  • Hi everybody, just wanted Missy Chow to know that after 16 years I still tow Lucinda around on my leash..it is a walk for me..and I decide where we are going!..the river is right in front of our house so all the critters have lots of water...and i like to sit on the bank and listen to them..since I can't see ...Lucinda or James have to sit with me, so I don't fall...little do they know, I know that river bank by heart..but I still let them babysit me...must get a snack and take a snooze..talk to you wild doggers tomarrow, love, Cora-Belle
