Rose of Sharon on the Pergola

Posted by Sharkey

Francesca and I are both lovers of flowers and especially love walking through the pergola on the farm.  Different varieties of flowers bloom at different times of the year, so there is always something pretty blossoming for us to look at!

With the high temperatures and humidity levels, it's amazing that flowers keep blooming. In this weather, I sure begin to wilt myself!

These Hibiscus syriacus, or more commonly known as Rose of Sharon, do very well in the heat as long as they receive regular waterings.

They are most commonly seen in shades of lavender, but also come in white and pink.

But what about these other flowers, the darker pink ones?

The flowers have more petals. Are they Rose of Sharon too?

Why yes, Francesca, these are also Rose of Sharon. The term actually refers to a broad variety of flowers.

I see, so these are still in the Hibiscus syriacus family, but instead of having one set of petals, they have an extra lacy ring in the center.

I just love learning about flowers, Sharkey. They are one of my favorite things about living on the farm!

  • Hello Francesca, Sharkey, Maddox, Lynn and all my glue squad friends,
What beautiful flowers today! I am up early because my mom worked late and is having trouble winding down after eating dinner at 1 a.m. I am tired from barking at the dog boarders at the hopsital. Those flowers, especially the pretty rose of sharon will help me dream of fields of color.
Yes, Maddox, I go to work every day with mom to the animal hospital. Today a handsome beagle named Chester stopped by my cage and wagged his tail! I think he has a crush on me! I am going to petsmart and the park with mom tomorrow since we are on vacation!!
Lynn we are SO HAPPY for you and Will to be the proud parents of two new puppies in the near future!!
That is really good news! Cora Belle, I hope you get lots of maple bars today. Rebel, are you watching baby bunnies? Delia and Kitty we hope you have a nice sunshiney day with no t-storms. Ming Ming good work! Missy Chow I hope you are having a nice week. Dudley, take care, you always say nice comments. Well, mom is starting to get tired. Sweet dreams, Abby

  • Good morning ladies,
I've noticed that the Rose of Sharon bushes in our neighborhood are looking great, too! Not much else is though. The clematis in the backyard is one that is a late starter, but blooms off and on all summer long. I'm waiting for the hummingbirds. I wonder if they're coming at all? The feeder has been out & no visitors yet.
I have new food, the bag says "senior" on it. I know I'm a Senor, but a senior? Anyway, it tastes good & that's what's important, right?
    Have a great day all.
    Your pal,
    Rebel

  • Good morning everyone,
I wonder exactly how many different flowers Martha has on her farm. That could be a contest, like how many jelly beans in a jar. hehehehehehehe
So Dudley, it doesn't get in the 80's or 90's too often where you live. That must be a nice place to live. Do you have a boat like Cora-Belle? Speaking of that woman, how did Lucinda make out at the doctor? I hope it was all good. Lynn, Karen said if you get a puppy and then plan on another one 6 months later, you should just get the two right away. All the housebreaking will be at one time. hehehehehe REBEL, I am shocked little man. TP? Sorry Mimi but I have to say, hehehehehehehehehehehehehhehehehehehehehe.......
Delia, aren't you afraid that the wild cats will fight with Kitty when she is out partying all night?
Kirby, a therapy dog is a dog that goes into a hospital or a nursing home and says hello to all the people that are there. The people can't have their pets with them so Ming Ming is like a substitute for their own pets. Karen said it was awesome and she was so proud of Ming Ming. She had little barrettes in her fur and little white socks with lace on them. All the people gathered around in circle around her. Some where in wheel chairs. Then one by one she went up to each one to say hi. She gave them her paw to shake hands and they bent down and pet her. They loved petting her fur. They all said how beautiful she was. One lady was talking French to her. I don't think she realized that Ming Ming is not a French bulldog, but rather a Chinese chow chow. hehehehehe And after she was all finished visiting she got to go for ice cream. She goes to her job two or three times a month. Karen has another dog that lives in Atlanta that was born blind and he is a therapy dog at a children's hospital down there. The kids just love him. Karen really enjoyed seeing Ming Ming at work. Zoe, Abby and Missy Chow, no posts yesterday. Are the three of you in the penalty box?
    Love to all,
    Maddox

  • Hello Ladies,
I have never seen Rose of Sharon bushes so large. You are both so lucky to have such beautiful views of flowers every day. Sharkey, the lavender looks lovely against your fur and Franny, you are looking so healthy and fit. Keep up the good work on your horticulture lectures. Thank you for your lovely observations. I am up early--allergies. Can hardly wait to hear of everyones day yesterday. How are the rabbits, Rebel? We have caught raccoons, skunks and a cat on our night vision camera. Have a great day all. I will check back later to see what is going on.
    Hugs & smiles,
    Lynn

  • Hello ladies, Kirby here.
Ok Maddox, thanks for the information about Ming Ming being a therapy dog. So she just lets people pet her and shake hands. I can shake hands too; give me five is the “key” word for me. Mommy and Daddy go to the nursing home; wonder if they do therapy there too. I’ll bet they shake hands with everyone there too. I often want to go, but I have to stay home. I did see the flowers today but I’m not into flowers that much. So lovely to look at: so delightful to see. When I see plants: I want to “KIRBY.” That was Daddy yelling at me to stop. Better stop or he’ll take the keyboard away from me again; nap time.
    Catch you later, Kirby.

  • Hi Ladies & Glue Squad, The Rose of Sharon flowers are so pretty. Mom used to have a pink bush in the yard for a couple of years; and she said that the last year she had it, it was the best year it had bloomed, after that nothing so it was removed and never replaced. Both of you should give your very own little flower tours around the farm; I know you'd do a great job.

Lynn & Will, congratulations on your decision of new additions to the family, Warrior Prince Basil would be very happy for the two of you. I know "your boy" will never be forgotten by your family. We can't wait to hear all about them in the future. :)

Maddox, no penalty box but certainly short time outs for me the last couple of days. Mom may need some additional "Chow tips" from Karen. Things can be challenging for all of us. Kirby, I go after Mom's ornamental grass in the backyard; however, it is in "my fenced area" sooo isn't possession 9/10's of the law, but I hear my name being called also to leave it alone.

Good job, Ming Ming, keep shaking your paw to all your new friends. I'm sure they love you already. ;)

Abby, have fun at the park & petsmart, enjoy Mom's vacation week. Oh yeah, I did get my certificate at the end of class of Sunday; now to remember everything (maybe not so much to remember the training; but to be happy to obey Mom & Dad) and stay on their good side.:)

    Till next time,
    Missy Chow
    xoxo

  • HI F,S,&GK+ Glue Squad, Beautiful girls, you sure do share some beautiful things with us and I love seeing them and how nice to see those wonderful flowers on the pergola today! Those colors are so gorgeous and I'll bet they smell nice, too! Martha sure does have a beautiful farm! Bet it's kind of hot there again! It is supposed to be 80 here today and Mom will have to water all of her veggies again today and I will help her because she lost her voice several days ago and is coughing a bit and can only work a short time being stressed out. We sure hope all of the rest of you are doing well and will check back later to read more comments! Love, Dudley Do Right XOXOXO+

  • F & S you both look so sweet looking at the flowers. Such a look of wonderment on your faces. Maddox thanks for the info on Ming Ming being a therapy dog. I bet those people's spirits were so much happier after seeing her.

Abby, that Chester sounds like a fine fellow. Maybe you should get his number before he heads home again.

  • ..pretty flowers..I like flowers..the deer eat alot of ours..but Lucinda and James just say the little guys have to eat, too..night vision cameras..cool..we have cameras on the driveway..unfortunately we see a lot of two legged criiters creeping around at night on them..though a closed gate discourages them..plus everyone around here knows that the wild Cora-Belle is a force to be reckoned with (in my younger days) still..Ivy, the wonderdog, was prone to biting and asking questions later, now there was a watchdog!! She was and still is my hero!..Lucinda is fine..just an old gomer that carried heavy food and drink trays for a lot (40) years with a sore back..oh no!! the Chiweenies are coming to visit..their people are off to the dr. today, so we will have them for the nite..warm enough to go stick our toes in the river and then sit and relax and bark at critters and eat some snacks..the Chiweenies are finally getting the hang of barking at coons..better see if the Warrior Prince cookies are out of the oven!..later, Cora-Bele

  • Hi all,
Sooooo Abby, you do know that this Chester guy has to pass the Glue Squad initiation if he thinks he is going to be your boyfriend? Kirby, you should get your mom and dad to see of you can be a therapy dog do when they go to the nursing home, you can go along.
Cora-Belle, you will have your little friends trained to be good cattle dogs in no time. Hehehe. Missy Chow, a big congratulations on your certificate. Good job girl. Dudley, I hope your mom's cough gets better real quick
Thanks everyone for your kind words about Ming Ming. She is a cutie pie. Well, until tomorrow
    Maddox

  • Oh you are so lucky to have such pretty Roses of Sharon. Mom loves them very much, but the last one on our property was pulled up before I even came to live in Milwaukee several years ago. I don't know why; it might have been sick. I hope tha sometime soon Mom can plant another pretty Rose of Sharon. Of course, I also hope that a rabbit family will move underneath it and then I will have some huntin' to do!!!
