Holes

Posted by Sharkey

Being the dogs on the farm, Francesca and I feel an instinctual need to protect our territory.  So when we notice something awry on the farm, we have to track down the cause!

Sharkey! What are you doing? You look confused!

Francesca, I've been noticing a lot of strange holes in the grass and I'm trying to track the animal that's making them!

Many of them seem to be underneath the bird feeders, so I'm guessing it's a small animal that likes to snack on the birdseed that falls to the ground.

Oh Sharkey! I think I found one of the holes you were talking about! Over here!

That's one of them, Franny! Now let's both smell it to figure out what type of animal is making these silly holes! Many animals dig holes to hide food for later.

You can often tell what type of animal it is by the size of the hole. I would venture by the size of this one that it is likely a squirrel.

Although, there has been a pesky chipmunk coming around here for the sunflower seeds. He's more likely to dig smaller holes the size of silver dollars, but let's keep our eyes out for him, just in case!

  • A "hole" in one today with the blog! :)

    That darn chippy is adorable!

If I was an outdoor critter at Martha's place, I would for sure be around the bird feeders, with my mouth open for any spillage that might happen!

    Here's to a super Tuesday!
gail- I'm up early today. :)

  • Good morning ladies,
Those chipmunks sure are cute. Bet they're real fast, too!
That chipmunk might sit up & scold you for bothering him.
I had an appointment with my Dr. Becky yesterday. No big deal. Last week my eyes had more stuff coming out of them and I had to rub my ears a lot. So, off to the Vets. Mimi is such a worry wart...
The Olympics is on TV so much that I had a dream last night about our Glue Squad dream team. I think we could all make a run on the equestrian cross country venue. There is a Skechers commercial with a pup that looks so much like Sharkey! She's at the store picking up her custom made running shoes. Too funny....
Hope everybody is o.k. Will check in later to see what you are all up to.
    Your Pal,
    Rebel

  • Good Morning F & S

We have those pesky chipmunks all over the place!! In fact they did a lot of damage to the waterfall and we had to have it repaired. They made a nest which caused the stone on one side to sink. The guys came out and rebuilt it and mom has this solar device in there now which is suppose to make a noise and keep them out. Oh and we also have these gross looking moles which I love to hunt and kill. They make all kinds of holes in the yard too!!! Mom has garlic tubes that she stuffs down in the holes which is suppose to get rid of them but I don't think it works. In fact sometimes she reminds me of the movie Caddy Shack with all her crap. Oh well - gotta love my mom :)

So yesterday I had a wonderful day I even went for a swim. I like when mom takes me in she holds me very close and I feel secure. I didn't scratch to get away even once. Not like that Super Nanny who wants to teach me to swim - doesn't she know Frenchie's don't swim!!!

Today I have to help dad we are having problems with the Polaris in the pool. For those of you who don't know what that is it's the self cleaning pool vacum. T-Bone likes to hunt the tail hose that sweeps around the bottom. It comes to the top once in a while and he tries to catch it. We're going on 10 years now and he still hasn't even come close. You think he'd give up - crazy Lab.

    Well I hear breakfast :)

  • Good morning,
That last picture is priceless. The chipmunk looks like a deer caught in headlights. Good detective work girls. Very good indeed. Just be careful that you don't step in one of those holes. Well, another muggy day today. The AC's have been going non stop.
I think I am heading to the deck before it gets unbearable. Later Glue Squadders.
    Love to all,
    Maddox
PS - Dudley, did you see how so many of the Glue Squad talked about your friend Lady on the previous post? We are here for you litte buddy.

  • Hello ladies, Kirby here.
I find holes in my yard all the time. It’s caused by squirrels hiding food. They like to hide food in very loose soil; mostly the flower pots and beds. When winter comes, they often forget just where they hid them. Mommy has some very strange looking plants coming up among her flowers at times; keeps her busy pulling them out. She often puts wire mesh in the flower pots. That helps somewhat, but the squirrels often lift the edges up and dig under the mesh. It’s been so hot that I stay indoors and don’t keep them chased out of the yard. When it becomes cooler, I’ll go back to chasing them. Meanwhile, I’ll take a nap.
    Catch you later, Kirby.

  • Great observation S & F! you should see our Moss Garden it looks like a war went through, because of the dryness the Kritters are digging it all up, it's really an ugly scene :-(

Yes I also think the Chippy is so cute, but what pests...Kitty is like an armed guard, she rids all the chipmunks in our perimeter, then they taunt her in the woods. ;-)

Whoa Gail you are up early today! (wish the time on my ID here was correct, it's off) Rebel good to hear your eyes are OK. Zoe garlic grenade in the hole sounds like it might work, but then maybe they eat it as well. Maddox have a restful and comfortable day. Kirby they never remember where they bury their stash, they just like making a mess...we have many Hickory and Oak Trees with lots of food for the Deer and small Kritters and the buried ones sprout and grow more trees.

Got to run and answer an email from dear Lynn.
    have a great one!!!

  • Hi F,S,&GK+ Glue Squad, My oh my, you girls look so cute trying to figure out what animal is making those holes you found at the farm! I just love to see every adventure that you take and the result of this one was terrific! That chipmunk is so cute and I'll bet it's very active, too! Maddox, it was so nice to read the comments from all of our Glue Squad friends caring so much about the loss of my sweet friend, Lady! Mom and I really appreciate your thoughtfulness! Lynn, I did get to read your super comment last night and as always we appreciate that Basil was at Rainbow Bridge to take care of sweet, little Lady! Thank you for all of your prayers! Sure hope all of you have another safe day! Love, Dudley Do Right XOXOXO+

  • Hello Francesca, Sharkey, Maddox, Jan, Dudley,Rebel, Lynn and my glue squad buddies,
What a nice photo of the chipmunk, caught red handed holding some sun flower seeds. Chipmunks are pesky but mom really likes the little fellow by the stone wall in our driveway who pops up to watch her come home during the day time hours then pops down when I get out of the car. I think chipmunk holes are better than the SNAKE holes we see sometimes- OOK. There are garter snakes now by the grassy area where Mom walks the dogs at work. I am so NOT AFRAID. Cora Belle would be proud! Some of the dogs walk FAR around the garter snakes that eat insects basically.
Dudley, we are very sorry to hear about your buddy Lady passing away. Herman and Basil will be there at the bridge to help her out in her peaceful place.
Kirby, are you napping during our thunder storms too? Kitty, good job on garden security patrol! Zoe, nice swimming, that was brave. Rebel, we liked hearing about your special chair napping place.Cora belle, are having more river adventures with the chiweenies? Lynn, have you seen the black cat again on your night vision camera? Hopefully not big foot. Big Foot is Jimmy's nick name.. haha.. because as a persian boy he sometimes misses his window sill landings. I have a tiny abscess behind my ear that is healing from a thorn. Off to nap.. Glue Squad Dream Team dreams..... Abby

  • Hello Ladies & Glue Squad,
On hole patrol eh? You girls don't miss a trick on that farm. The chipmunk is pretty cute, and not so dangerous as a raccon or skunk like our cameras are catching. The raccoons are making lots of holes here in our yard. Remember how I said they are digging up night crawlers? I was correct, and now those 5 little devils are making tons of holes in the yard. Will even put up some bars on the gates--that doesn't stop them---pests and a danger to dogs, with 5 of them. Dudley, I am glad you are such a support to everyone with the loss of Lady. I can't stop thinking of her.Zoe, you need to find out from your Mom what will make my goofy raccoons go away since she knows this stuff. Rebel, I hope your eyes and ears are feeling better. You have a good mom looking after you. I think it is a horrible allergy season. I have been taking Chinese herbs to beat the band to help my sinuses. Hang in there little buddy. I was so happy to hear from Baby Favor the other day--don't stay away so long. I love hearing from you. Everyone stay cool and calm today. I am working on cards and listening to Christmas music--that helps when making Christmas cards you know!!
    Hugs & smiles,
    Lynn

  • Hole patrol and the PSI: Paw Scene Investigation crack team is on the case again!

Hope everyone is having a lovely day. Senor Rebel and Abby please take care of yourselves and get well fast!

  • ..hi everybody..I am not feeling too perky..so I am taking a few days off..will talk to everyone on Friday..love, Cora-Belle

  • Cora Belle,
You rest your barking bones. As we get older and we aren't spring chickens anymore, we have to take it easy once in a while. You have been on farm patrol and taking care of Lucinda and her back. Have your folks get you a couple of maple bars and have some good "cc" time. I am thinking positive thoughts for good energy to come your way.
    Hugs,
    Lynn
