Keeping our Cool!
Posted by F&S
It’s not quite summer yet, but it sure feels like it’s here. The temperatures have been hovering around 90º and it’s been super humid. You know what that means for us dogs – PANTING! And lots of it!
1 Whew! G.K., it sure is a scorcher today! A quick walk outside and we're already panting like crazy!
2 We rely on panting as our cooling system, while humans rely on sweating. When humans sweat, the moisture cools their skin as it evaporates.
3 That's right, Sharkey, When we pant, we are getting air on our tongues which in turn helps cool down the blood vessels in our heads.
4 We also rely on a lot of water to help speed up this process! In the summer months, it's important to make sure your pups are well hydrated!
5 I also like to find a fan or an air conditioning vent to sit by to help me cool down in my big fur coat. Some people think I might need a haircut in the summer but my internal cooling system works just fine!
6 We also love to find a cool spot to sit, whether it be shady grass outside or the nice cool marble floor in Martha's kitchen.
7 Franny, you're right about this floor! Marble and other stones absorb heat at a much faster rate than air, which is why it feels cold to the touch.
8 When I'm feeling especially hot, I like to stretch out and press my entire body on the floor, like this. Heatstroke can affect pets too, so take care of us in the hot weather! If you're uncomfortable, we likely are too!
9 Silly dogs, what wimps! It's not that hot out yet...it's still spring!
10 Actually, the flagstone on the porch is quite cool. Those dogs may be on to something...
