Keeping our Cool!

Posted by F&S

It’s not quite summer yet, but it sure feels like it’s here.  The temperatures have been hovering around 90º and it’s been super humid.  You know what that means for us dogs – PANTING!  And lots of it!

Whew! G.K., it sure is a scorcher today! A quick walk outside and we're already panting like crazy!

We rely on panting as our cooling system, while humans rely on sweating. When humans sweat, the moisture cools their skin as it evaporates.

That's right, Sharkey, When we pant, we are getting air on our tongues which in turn helps cool down the blood vessels in our heads.

We also rely on a lot of water to help speed up this process! In the summer months, it's important to make sure your pups are well hydrated!

I also like to find a fan or an air conditioning vent to sit by to help me cool down in my big fur coat. Some people think I might need a haircut in the summer but my internal cooling system works just fine!

We also love to find a cool spot to sit, whether it be shady grass outside or the nice cool marble floor in Martha's kitchen.

Franny, you're right about this floor! Marble and other stones absorb heat at a much faster rate than air, which is why it feels cold to the touch.

When I'm feeling especially hot, I like to stretch out and press my entire body on the floor, like this. Heatstroke can affect pets too, so take care of us in the hot weather! If you're uncomfortable, we likely are too!

Silly dogs, what wimps! It's not that hot out yet...it's still spring!

Actually, the flagstone on the porch is quite cool. Those dogs may be on to something...

  • Hello Ladies & G.K.,
You 3 have the right idea on how to get cool. Take it easy on yourselves though, you are still getting well. Franny, do you have a nurse that takes your cone off every hour so you can have drinking time? That cone must make it hard to drink I would think. Kirby, maybe you can advise me on how a doggie in a cone drinks. It isn't easy I bet. I hope Kirby isn't itching and the rest of you are cool and enjoying your day. Cora Belle, I was worried, you take it easy too. But I know you, those critters will not get a brake. Stay healthy and have a happy day all! Tracie, thinking of you often and hoping each day you are healing.
    Hugs and smiles,
    Lynn

  • Good morning Glue Squad,
Yes, keeping cool is very important for animals. Those marble floors of Martha's must feel soooooo nice and comfortable. I hope everyone finds a nice cool spot when they are hot so they don't get overheated.
Chloe, what kind of turtles came into your yard? Snapping turtles? Dudley, I hope your Uncle Tim's head is not hurting anymore. Rebel, you live near a lake. Do you ever go out on a boat in the lake? I bet that would be fun. And Abby, go around to all the dogs in your neighborhood and get them to start barking at 2am. I don't mean to be disrespectful because it is choral music but they should be more respectful of the neighbors and play it at a better time. Well, it is raining on and off but right now it is not so maybe I will do the deck thing. But if I do that, I would have to lay in the wet water on the deck. Naaaaaaa, I will go check out the tv.
    Love to all,
    Maddox
PS - Thanks again to everyone who said such nice things about me winning those trophies. You guys are great.

  • Good Morning F & S

We got hit with the heat this weekend as well and yesterday was a scorcher! Dad and I were out only a short while and he was soaked we had to come in since the heat and humidity really affect his breathing.

Franny I agree the full body spread is the best I love to lay like that :) Mom got the big guys a buzz cut for the summer it helps eliminate all the shedding plus I imagine keeps them cool. Sophie likes to lay on the a/c vent with her paws crossed she looks just too cute.

F & S do you have a spray bottle for outside? Mom sprays my face with a cold mist and it feels so good you should try it.

Nothing exciting here the past few days I've been good imagine that ;) Mom is leaving for work early to get caught up from being away.

    Stay cool everyone!

    Zoe

  • Good morning everybody!
Oh, yeah! The heat has been here, too! Papa took me for a little walk this weekend and he realized that it was too hot and carried me the rest of the way home. I hit the tile floor, too! Hey, G.K., is there a floor vent? Mimi says that the shelties would plop down on top of the vent for instant cool air.
I wonder about water time for Frannie, too. But I figure you all are just fine.
    Happy day everybody!
    Your pal,
    Rebel

  • Oh Frannie that cone looks so hot, too bad it's not a white or really light color...I see you have a different one on, but still black inside(If I had designed this cone I would have made it a reversible. uuuhh sure wish I had Marble floors, they are so nice and cool...our house stays cool because of all the surrounding trees.

Kirby don't scratch or you'll have that cone to wear, Cora Belle hope you are better we worry about you, Rebel take it easy on your walks and stay out of the heat & hail, Maddox just remember you are deserving of your win, Zoe snoring? surely super nanny was pranking! Dudley I hope your Uncle Tim's head is getting better. Oh my, I can see that Persian cat with a lion cut doo ;-) OK if I forgot anyone SORRY...whew!!

Kitty is limping slightly for the last 4 days, I can't find anything wrong so am not too worried, I just don't like for her to be ill or in any kind of pain :-(

Lynn I forgot to Thank You for sharing that lovely photo of the Lake...it looks enjoyable there. I feel like Basil is living here with me looking at the photos so much ;-)

OK off to get my cup of Java!

delia & Kitty =^. .^= sleeping right now with her paws covering her face...so cute!

  • Hello ladies, Kirby here.
I think that all of us have some special place to lay when it’s hot. Mine is the kitchen floor, the bathroom or by the front door. All of those places do not have carpet which makes them cool. I move from one to another when it’s hot outside. Mommy keeps it around 73 degrees in the house. I have been “cone free” for five weeks now. While having that thing on, I found that I could do almost everything I wanted to do. The only thing I haven’t mastered is the dog door. The cone just doesn’t fit at all. Maybe if I try backing out the door that would work. I can back up pretty good but with that cone on it’s really harder to do. In the fall, I’ll let you know how that works for me. I’ll most likely be wearing it again; darn.
    Catch you later, Kirby.

  • Hi F,S,&GK+Glue Squad, Love seeing these photos of all 3 of you again! Sharkey and GK, the 2 of you look the most comfortable and Franny, how nice that the outside of your cone is white to prevent so much heat and if the inside was white, too you might be even cooler! I've been panting a bit when it gets hot here and Mom gives me lots of cool water to keep me cool! My Uncle Tim is doing a bit better and we will be happy when he get those staples removed! Maddox, so proud of you for winning those trophies and I'm sure GK is proud of his Dad, too! Zoe, sure hope you and your family are staying a bit cooler and I like the sprayer idea! Lynn, hope you are doing well and I still miss our great buddy Basil! Rebel, my Mom did the same thing as your Dad did for you, she carried me when I got too hot on our last walk! We sure have great parents! Delia, sure hope Kitty is OK and has stopped limping! Maybe she jumped out of a tree and hurt her leg-hope not! Kirby, sure glad you aren't wearing a cone and hope you don't get any more fleas-take care! Cora-Belle, sure hope you don't have a heart mummer-Mom said every dog she had before me had one and luckily I don't! My prayers are with all of you great buddies! Will check on the rest of you later! Hope all of you have a great day and stay safe! Love, Dudley Do Right XOXOXO+

  • Hello Francesca, Sharkey, G.K., Lynn, Maddox, rebel, Dudley and all my glue squad friends,
So glad to see all the great photos today of Franny, Sharkey and G.K. keeping cool with your tile floor manuevers and poshy water bowls. Wow wonder what they are made of? Never saw water bowls like that before, I have a big crock to drink out of. mom says i am part camel. hehehe.
Maddox, we are so proud of you! Hope you find some interesting animal related tv. Kirby, great job keeping cone free.Kitty, hope you are not limping in your outside travels today. Zoe, stay cool- do you ever get to the beach? Chloe watch out for those snapping turtle critters. Dudley, hope your Uncle Tim gets better soon. Wonder Woman Cora Belle- hope you are feeling much better!!! Mom was worried about you!! Rebel,I like to stretch out on the tile floor too to keep cool in this heat.
James dean got a hair cut yesterday so he looks funny in his lion cut but is cooler! Mom took me to the pet store yesterday and I am styling in a new blue MS collar!
Lynn, we are both glad you had a nice time in the mountains. Saturday was the first day Mom said it was not "worse" since Herman joined the rainbow bridge crew. She visits his picture on the back porch and took home his ashes last night. Jimmy and I are keeping her busy and I try to make her laugh. Hugs to you Lynn and all the glue squad, KEEP COOL- Abby the beach dog frenchie pug

  • Humidity is the pits! Everything droops! :)

It's been rather muggy here in NH. I hope this isn't an indication of what's ahead for summer.

I like how Franny is stretched all the way out! Must keep your tum tum cool!

Maybe some 'pup-sicles' are in order on hot days! :)

  • You know what else helps hot pups? Cool costs! Our Auntie Ellen makes the most fabulous, one of a kind "cool" coats out of fabrics that she has left over from plays that she has designed costumes for. Our First Mama can help you get in touch with Auntie Ellen through her Blissful Dog site. We girls share a coat that looks like a French flag (but blingy!) when we help out French Bulldog Rescue Network at Bastille Days in Milwaukee. We look GORGEOUS!!!!

  • Hi everyone... I din't realize everyone comments on these blogs! I check them everyday and love Martha's pictures! Does anyone know where those fantastic gold water bowls Martha has are from? They are amazing! Of course, Martha has great taste! Any help would be apprecitaed...

    Happy blogging! :)
