A Lesson in Azaleas

Posted by F&S

After helping Wilmer with the cat’s cradles for peonies, we Frenchies, headed to a far corner of the farm, where Martha has planted some beautiful flowering shrubs.  At first, we weren’t quite sure what they were, but with a little investigation, we had it all figured out.

Sharkey! Look how vibrant these bushes are! Do you suppose they're azaleas or perhaps, rhododendrons?

Francesca, it's not uncommon to confuse the two. After all, azaleas are in the genus Rhododendron. However, most azaleas can be distinguished from rhodododendrons by their leaves.

The leaves of azaleas tend to be thinner, softer, and more pointed than rhododendron leaves, which can be quite large.

Azalea flowers can range in size and color from white, to pink, to purple, to red - there are no yellow azaleas and only a few orange varieties.

Oh, Sharkey! Take a look at these azaleas! They're such a lovely shade of lavender!

Unfortunately, I'm not so shade tolerant when there's still a chill in the air, like today! Brrrr!

  • Good Morning F & S

I don't feel like commenting on your flowers this morning I'm more interested in a health update.

Franny how is that working out with having your eye stitched closed? That has to be so uncomfortable, I feel bad. Sharkey I hope you are taking it easy on that paw and not trying to chew off the bandage. I know myself I'd have that off in no time ;)

Not by my choice but I'm up at the crack of dawn again. Mom has to travel far to play in a tournament. She was not happy about missing work again and can't understand why the men get to play their matches on the weekends and the woman must play during the week. Most of them don't work and need something to do while hubby is working so they never push to have the team matches played on the weekends. I also noticed that on the website none of them use their first name which I found odd. Why does someone go by Mrs. Richard Smith instead of Mrs. Sue Smith? If I was meeting her for the first time I would call her Richard since it's obvious she is having an identity crises. I can't figure humans out.

Rain is coming this way I hope it leaves before the weekend. Well Glue Squad my computer time is over. Have a good weekend :)

  • Hello ladies,
Those flowers are beautiful. You are surrounded in all different colors and shades when it comes to Martha's plants. It must be like living in a rainbow at the farm. That must be so beautiful. I am glad you have that. How are you girls doing today? I hope you both get some "cc" time this weekend.
Lynn, that is a very good idea to donate your dog biscuit money to the Frenchie rescue. I bet our little buddy, Warrior Prince Basil is smiling right now.
Cora-Belle, I wonder what your gift will be today.
I can't wait to hear. By the way, I meant to ask you, what is a maple bar? It sounds like a candy bar for humans, but that can't be right. The way you love them, they must be delicious. Kirby, you have such nice parents. They scratch your itchy spots to try to make you more comfortable. Lola, you must be in Ohio by now with Gran. I bet you are very happy. Chloe, ket;s play a game. We will call it the
Well gang, again with the rain. We need it but it messes with my morning patrol and nap on the deck. So, I guess I will go get the remote and check out tv. I am still trying to find the channel that has Girls Gone Wild Canine Version but I am not having much luck with that. Have a fantastic weekend everyone. Good luck to Zoe's mom today at her golf match.

  • Again, my big paw pushed a wrong button and my message went away. I was going to say to Chloe that we that should play a game called SEE HOW GOOD CHLOE CAN BE FOR THE WEEKEND. hehehehehe
Ok, now I am done, for the moment anyway. I will be back later.
    Have a great weekend,
    Love to all,
    Maddox

  • Morning ladies!
How pretty. So many colors! Are there any bees? I think Mama's bee would love all those pretty flowers. You gals seem to be getting around the farm o.k. Just be careful.
What a weekend! Cinco de Mayo and the Derby, too! My pick is Gemologist. Go pony go!
I may be a chihuahua, but I don't think spicy food & my tummy get along. I don't want to sound like the little engine that could! LOL
To Zoe's Mom, good luck at the tournament! Mimi says she has to get busy and get her game back. Whatever that means!
Hey, Lynn, how's the dentist? Mimi says I have an appointment to get my teeth cleaned. She says I won't feel a thing. She says I'll be sleeping, were you sleeping, too?
Cora Belle, our lake coyote was visiting yesterday, he/she is a verrrry healthy looking coyote. Guess that's why I don't see any rabbits. Hope you have more good treats for your pre-actual-birthday weekend.
    Have a good weekend everybody!
    Your pal,
    Rebel

  • Hello Ladies,
I do love the horticulture lessons. We can't grow either of these in Colorado in the ground--just pots outside in the summer. Almost time to plant the garden. I know these photos were pre-surgery. I pray you are both healing well and having lots of "cc" time with Mom. I did see her on Jimmy Fallon last night. She is a busy bee. Rebel, you took the words right out of my mouth about the Derby---Gemologist is the one to beat I think. The boys leave for fishing today so I will keep very busy this weekend. It is the first time alone without my boy. I still miss him every day guys, but I try to be strong like a Warrior Prince. Now, no more itching poor Kirby boy. I am sending brain waves that the flees get lost going to your house. Lola, I bet you are having "cc" time with Gran about now. Have a grand weekend all. Hope you get a fun birthday surprise Cora Belle.
    Hugs & smiles,
    Lynn

  • Cora-belle, you are driving me crazy waiting to see what your gift is today. And then I will have to wait till Mobday to see what you got over the weekend.
I forgot about the pick for the Derby. I will let you know on Monday who my pick is to win
    hehehehehehehe
And Zoe, your mom should sign in for the golf tournament as
Zoe's mom and proud of it

  • Hello ladies, Kirby here.
What lovely azaleas you have on the farm. Mommy has planted some of those orange azaleas in the spots where the red ones were. Had to take those old ones out because they were too old and mostly stems bigger than Daddy’s thumb. Mommy still has a few of the pink ones near the front door. I’ll be like Maddox the next few days; rain in the forecast. I just hate getting wet because it makes me smell like a D O G. I like being dry and fluffy. TGIF, the weekend is here. Have a safe one everyone.
    Catch you later, Kirby.

  • Hi Francesca, Sharkey, Lynn, Maddox, Lola, Rebel and all the glue squad,
Wow those flowers lessons really helped. i could not tell the difference between azaelas and their friends before. I keep trying to get a closer look at them and end up sniffing bees!! Mom does not like that at all. Sharkey I hope your paw and leg feel better soon. No cone on in these photos.
Kirby hope you are less itchy. Rebel and Lynn picked our choice for second Gemologist but mom still loves Daddy Nose Best. I think all the horses are beautiful. Mom worked overnight at the hospital and will do so again tonight so have to grab lots of sleep since I ride along. Chloe did you find any relics in the yard yet? Cora belle we hope you get lots of hugs and maple bars today! Maddox maybe you can watch the derby tomorrow on tv. Good luck to your mom, Zoe, in her match. Hope everybody has a great weekend!! High paws, Abby the frenchie pug

  • Hi Girl Friends &G.K.+Glue Squad, Thanks for sharing these beautiful photos of those lovely azaleas today my gorgeous girl friends! You look so good here and I'm praying that you are getting better and getting lots of 'cc' from Martha and GK! We have a beautiful azalea bush, too but it isn't blooming yet-been wet and cold here and the sun is finally coming out for the weekend again! Our rhody's are finally blooming! Hey Maddox, Zoe, Rebel and Lynn I sure love your comments again and I agree with you about commenting so nicely about our terrific friends! Sure hope everyone is doing well again and have a super weekend! We will be working outside if the sun is here and get ready to plant some vegetables ASAP! Take care everyone and stay happy! Love Dudley Do Right XOXOXO+

  • ..Hi everybody, we have rhodiess and azaleas too, but it hasn't been warm enough for them to bloom..I see lots of buds on them..the only bad thing about rhodies is they are really messy when blooms die off..first off Maddox, a maple bar is from the bakery..about 6 inches long a puffy airy cake like thing frosted with a maple flavored icing..yummy! I like butter-milk bars too,..oh boy, I got a cattledog crossing sign for the end of the driveway..James put it up when I wasn't looking (like I can see any more) anyway Lucinda told me it looks just like me..so that is cool..and I can't believe they got a raccoon crossing sign and a squirrel crossing sign and a frog crossing sign...old people are nuttier than old dogs!..not sure about betting on horses..thought you just nipped at them in a field and tried not to get kicked in the head...I"ll ask Lucinda and James bet they have a favorite..Rebel, watch out, yodel dogs are tricky guys..Ivy and I used to run them off the farm/ranch which was not smart now that i think about it..they could have torn us up badly..the things teen-age dogs used to do!Well. fellow glue squaders, I hear the tractor beiing fired up and the trailer being attached and blankets going out of the house..that only means one thing..JAmes is taking me for a ride around the property..Lucinda sits on the blankets next to me..I love those two!..over and out, Cora-Belle

  • Hi Girls & Glue Squad, The array of varied colors on the flowers certainly brightens things up. With temperatures cool and rainy the past few days, not much has been blooming here in the NE. Mom says she has not had very good luck with azaelas, but the rhododendron flowers will be out soon and will brighten up the backyard.

Hope you girls are feeling better and that GK has been watching over both of you.

My computer time this week has been limited due to Mom's schedule and what you may call my "Chow attitude", I've had a few "time outs" to say the least. Mom & Dad have not been overly happy with me. I've gotten into Mom's inside plants, tore a little paper, not to mention checking out shoes & slippers while their feet are still in them, not good at all :( They continue to call me "NO", I just don't get it.. They are still talking about intermediate training; and then, said I was having "the operation" next weekend & probably coming home with the cone. Boy, what a week that will be, doesn't sound like too much fun to me.

Hi Lynn, hope you are doing okay? Don't feel bad, Mom still misses Keebler.

    Everyone have a great weekend.

    Till next time,
    Missy Chow
    xoxo

  • Beautiful color in the garden. Hey, I say they need to name a few flowers after the both of you! :)

Please update us on how the both of you are doing!

Hugs to both...and the donks! :)

    gail

  • Crazy, hectic week. Have not been able to be here the way that I like. The flowers are beautiful but I'm far more concerned about how the two of you are doing. I know MommyM has been super busy with her new book and galas but I hope that she gets to spend quality time with you all this weekend.

I hope that everyone who is feeling under the weather gets better this weekend. Missy Chow I hope you don't need boot camp now. Cora-Bell, I love your Pre-B-Day presents.

Everyone have a great weekend!

  • ..Sabercat is my Derby choice...I love the name!..over and out Cora-Belle

  • Hello from Ohio .... Mom, Dad and I arrived late last night at Gran and Pop's. Gran and I have been busy today preparing for our post to you all. First we both agree Martha's flower bushes are really something... Beautiful Beautiful. Cora Bell, a present a day for sixteen days! That's outstanding! You must really have the life :) good for you! Zoe, that Mrs (Husband's first name) last name business may be related to some Country Clubs and their Male memberships. One of Gran's girl friends explained it to Gran after Gran noticed in their Club directory... it's Mr. .... and then the family names. Don't get Gran started on the subject. Cora Bell, are those maple bars found at Human or Pet bakeries. Need to know pretty quick so I can add them to tomorrow's errand list. Can't wait for the Derby... hope # 6 comes in a winner! Oops hearing noise in the kitchen. Treat time?? Be Safe and Happy Snucks to everyone.

  • Oh mommie delia is so jealous of those beautiful azaleas and rhododendrons! I wish we had them growing in our yard so I can scope out the birds that might visit them...oops here comes mommie, better hand over the keyboard. ;-)

Thanks Kitty...geesh, all this fur on the keys! you are such a fluff leaving your fine fur all over :-(

Love the cute pictures of you F & S and those beautiful Azaleas and Rhododendrons...yes I'm jealous, and wished I had replanted them many years ago, mine died and I have no clue why, however this might encourage me to try again!

All be well, enjoy the weekend!

    delia & Kitty =^. .^=

  • ..Lola..people bakeries have maple bars...Sabercat did not win..bad pick on my part..though I did get another pre-birthday treat..a stuffed porcupine..and it makes a loud oinking sound when you try to chew it into or tear its nose or leg off..I am feeling really tired must get some rest..over and out..Cora-Belle
