Francesca's Eye Problem Update

Posted by Sharkey

On yesterday’s blog, Francesca revealed that she is having an eye problem.  After a few different visits to the vet, we think we are on the right track for healing, what appears to be, a rather serious corneal ulcer.  We are all watching this thing like a hawk to make sure it's not a progressive ulcer.

Sigh...The diagnosis wasn't good. I have an ulcer on my cornea and I am no longer allowed to rub my eye.

Talk about tunnel vision! On top of all of this, I was diagnosed with Lyme Disease again! Blasted ticks! Now I have to be given two different eye drops throughout the day plus antibiotics for the Lyme!

Poor Francesca! That cone can't be fun to wear. She doesn't even see that I'm here.

I'm going to try my best to be supportive and pretend it's not a big deal! Franny keeps rubbing her eye which isn't going to help the ulcer heal so hopefully, the cone will stop her!

Sharkey, I finally found you. This cone is driving me mad!

Francesca, come and sit with me on the stonewall.

Here I come! Oof, this collar makes my head 4 times larger, making it quite difficult to navigate.

Hi Ryan! It seems that Franny has injured her cornea. We think she scratched it when we were chasing squirrels. One scurried into a hole in a tree and Franny buried her head in the hole trying to get it.

I was thinking that maybe I should wear a collar also so that you don't feel like you're in this alone.

Oh Sharkey, you're very sweet, but you wearing a collar really isn't necessary. While this thing my look ridiculous, I'm going to be diligent about wearing it. My health comes before fashion!

  • Oh no Franny, a corneal ulcer. That is not good at all. You make sure you get your medicine in your eye. And another bout of Lyme disease on top of it. Geez girfriend, we have to put you on our Glue Sq

  • Oh no, I don't know what I did but my comment went through and I wasn't done yet. I don't know what I pressed. I will have to get Karen to figure it out.
    Dumb computer did it. hehehehehe
Anyway, what I didn't finish in the comment was that Franny goes on the "Glue Squad not up to par" list and we will start praying and sending good thoughts your way. Having that collar will help a lot because you don't want to irritate that eye any more than it already is. You could get GK and Sharkey to dress up the collar. They could paint on it or put stickers on it. That would make it very fashionable.
Well, it is nice and cool out so I am headed back out to the deck. I will check back later,
    Love to all,
    Maddox

  • Good morning ladies,
Maddox has a great idea! Stickers on your cone for decoration. Actually, that is a good looking cone! No white plastic for Frannie (or Martha's furniture).
I was a bad boy last night, I lifted my leg in the dining room. Papa is angry with me, I got only 2 cheerios this morning. There is crate talk going on this morning. Mimi wants to gate me into the laundry room. I don't know why I did it.
Anyway, hope the Glue Squad members are all going to have a great day!
    Your pal,
    Rebel

  • Dear Francesca, Sharkey,G.K., Mama Martha, The Glue Squad and all our Daily Wag friends and followers,

Today is not easy for me to blog. Yesterday our dear Warrior Prince Basil got his angel wings. As you know last week was a blue ribbon week for my boy. I was even thinking the cancer had gone into remission, he ate so well all week. However, yesterday
morning he started vomiting. I even gave him one of those spa showers he enjoyed so well these last months and even vomited in the shower. I knew his kidneys were shutting down as this was what was told could happen. The call was placed to the vet, we had made arrangements with, to help him pass by late afternoon. His Dad, brother and sister were by his side with me in the backyard and as our dear Warrior Prince took his last breath the wind blew and thousands of petals of blossoms from neighboring trees blew in the wind. The doctor had never seen the like but we knew he was then being welcomed into the heavens. I know all the prayers and positive thoughts from this blog are what continued to give Basil and I strength throughout his life and health issues. We were so very blessed to have you all. I am happy my little man is without pain, but I miss him so very much. Basil was 11 11/2 years old.
    The Rainbow Bridge
By the edge of the wood, at the foot of the hill, is a lush, green meadow where time stands still. Where the friends of man and woman do run, when their time on earth is over and done. For here, between this world and the next, is a place where each beloved creature finds rest. On this golden land, they wait and they play, till the Rainbow Bridge they cross over one day. No more do they suffer, in pain or in sadness, for here they are whole, their lives filled with gladness. Their limbs are restored, their health renewed, their bodies have healed, with strength imbued. They romp through the grass, without even a care, until one day they start, and sniff the air. All ears prick forward, eyes dart front and back, then all of a sudden, one breaks from the pack. For just that instant their eyes have met, together again both person and pet. So they run to each other, these friends from the past, the time of their parting is over at last. The sadness they felt while they were apart, has turned into joy once more in each heart. They embrace with a love that will last forever, and then side-by-side-they cross over......together.
    Inspired by a Norse legend.

Please think of our Warrior Prince and smile.
    I love him.
    Lynn

  • It's not a good morning F, S, GK & my Glue Squad friends :(

Mom got the email from Lynn last night telling us of my best buddy Basil's passing. I'm very sad, mom is crying our hearts are breaking.

Lynn you and your family are in our thoughts and prayers. He was very lucky to have a family like yours to love and take care of him.

Ann, Zoe, T-Bone, Precious and Sophie

  • Morning Girl, GK & Glue Squad, Franny, so sorry to hear you're having an eye problem & Lyme at the same time, not fair at all. You listen to everyone, wear your cone, take your medicine and you will be good as new in no time. I'm sure Sharkey & GK will be watching you and taking good care of you. Rebel, what did you do??? Only 2 cherrios & crate talk, not a good sign :( . I had a pleasant surprise yesterday, I was able to hang out with my groomer; without a "tubby" this time-that comes in 3 weeks, and spend some time with her. I even got brushed, ahhh, that was nice! Dad is off to the dentist this morning and Mom is home working, so I'll try to be good for her, yeah right...I'm sure I will have a moment or two when I hear my name called in some way or another..hehe
Beautiful sunny day today so will be checking out the backyard later. I hear that a bird's nest is being built under the deck but haven't found it yet. Mom & Dad knows where it is but keeping it a secret! Hope you all have a great day.

    Till next time
    Missy Chow

  • Franny, please heal and get rid of the Lyme Disease! I will say my healing mantra to the Great Dog Curialis until you are well! Get well!

  • Hello ladies, Kirby here.
What a bad day it was for our buddies. Basil has always been my ‘cheerful spot’ of the day showing his courage in the face of trouble. I know I will miss him, but at 10 years old, it won’t be too long before I join him. Make lots of friends there Basil so you can introduce them to me when I get there. Franny, take it from Doc Kirby; wearing that hoodie isn’t that bad. I have to put one on at times when I start pulling out my hairs. I think I can do better than the brush, so I give myself a workout. Only problem is, I don’t know when to stop. Anyway, hoodies are the fashion now days.
    Catch you later, Kirby.

  • Hi Lynn,

Missy Chow & I are so sorry to read of your loss, Warrior Prince Basil. Although we have just recently been contributing to the DW; it felt like we knew both of you personally. Basil had a wonderful, caring and loving family to call all his own and returned his love to all of you. Know that Warrior Prince Basil will be among the many loved and cherished members of our families that have already gone to the Rainbow Bridge. The good times will NEVER be forgotten and the happy times they brought to us. Stay strong.

Our condolences to you and your family!

    Best wishes,

    Missy Chow & Family
    xoxo

  • Oh I dreaded coming to the blog this morning...my heart is heavy for Lynn...Sweet Little Basil is at peace and someday be reunited with his wonderful family..the poem says it all!
Lynn I pray for your heart to heal and your memories of the good times...you were Blessed to have had Basil in good spirits in the last days and Basil was Blessed to have had you as the human mommie.

    Hugs to You and family

  • I am sooo sad to hear about my new friend Basil. Even though I am new to the Glue Squad, I feel like we have been friends for a long time. I will surely miss my friend. But I know he is looking down on us all and his family from Heaven. He was so very brave and strong and he is going to be missed.:(

Yes..... I am still at boot camp by the way. Maybe Basil could be my guardian angel and get me out of here :)

To Basil"s family... I am so sorry for your loss and you will be in my mom and my prayers. God Bless all of you and my friend Basil.

    Chloe xx

  • Sorry my mind was on Lynn and Basil's rainbow trip...so I have not forgotten you Francesca. I'm sorry about your eye and that you have Lyme disease again, how dreadful...I worry about that with Kitty because of the ticks she gets. I do hope that it will heal and you won't have your discomfort...Sharkey will be at your side to guide you with that hoodie.
I had 2 horses that had eye problems and it was so much work treating them, but when you love your animals and you will do anything to help them, right?

    delia & Kitty =^. .^=

  • Dear Lynn,

Sharkey, G.K., and I, as well as the donks, horses, cats, and all the animals here at the farm extend our condolences to you and your family.

Basil has been an important part of the Glue Squad here and his daily comments have brought all of us so much joy.

Lots of love and plenty of licks,
    Francesca

  • Rest In Peace Sweet Basil.
Miss Lynn, we are so sorry and saddened with Basil's passing. You certainly did a wonderful job taking care of him and he loved you all the more for the love and attention you shared with him during his difficult time. May you always remember the fun and naughty times Basil and your family shared together.
    Take care
Peace and Love be with you all
    Rita (Little Lola's Gran)

  • It's a rough morning isn't it? Franny, the hoodie can't be fun and comfortable but in the long run the hood will help you. Perhaps along with the Doctor's orders you can take extra naps to help rest the eye. Wish I was there to help you. Hope Mama Martha gives you extra treats... I am certain she will. Maybe Uncle Carlos can take you for a few nice car rides, you always seem to enjoy those times. Just try and remain calm and perhaps listen to nice peaceful music. You are such a sweet thing. Hugs to you, Sharkey and GK.
    Love
    Little Lola

  • Hi Girl Friends, &G.K.+Glue Squad, My Mom and I are having a rough time reading all of these comments our friends, human and animal have presented today. The tears in our eyes make it hard to see and we are very upset about Francesca's corneal ulcer and Lyme return, as well as the loss of our great buddy, Warrior Prince Basil. We are sending our prayers to Franny to get well ASAP and to Lynn and all of Basil's wonderful family. We will miss him. We hope all of you are OK and we love everyone connected to The Daily Wag. Love, Licks,& Kisses to all from Dudley Do Right and Jan XOXOXO+

  • Today is tinged with such sadness here at the DW. I received the email last night from Lynn telling me about our Warrior Prince Basil Boy soaring high with his new Angel wings.

My heart aches for loss of our sweet friend who battled his lifelong health issues with strength and courage. He has brought such joy to us here. His warrior spirit will continue to bless us and remind us that even in the most daunting of times when night falls around us and closes in, we must stand tall and reach inside ourselves for the sunshine that glows within so that can beat back the night and greet a new day.

Bless you sweet Lynn and your family. You gave Basil Boy a beautiful life and his love will always wrap around you.

  • Dear Francesca, oh no sweet girl not this and the Lyme Disease is back. I know that you will receive the most wonderful care so take your medicine like a good girl. You know that Sharkey and G.K. are there for you and will help you get through this as we Glue Squadders will be too.

I must say that that cone as far as cones go is very stylish on you. Nothing but the best!

Chloe, I think we need to stage a rescue for you to get you out of boot camp. You're just a sweet big puppy with lots of energy to burn.

  • My deepest condolences go out to Lynn and Warrior Prince Basil's family. Mom has tears in her eyes reading that he passed but know that he is at peace now and remember to think of all the good times you shared together. Take care of your self too Lynn. The glue squad is always here for you.
I certainly hope Francesca feels better soon. She is being brave and corneal ulcers can be painful and so light sensitive. Chloe we think you need to get out for some spring break. Rebel, hope you do not get the crate but if so maybe you can enjoy nap time like me at work. My heart goes out to each of you glue squad and take care. We all loved Basil.

  • Maddox here again,
I was out on the deck and when I came in, I saw Karen was sitting at the computer crying real hard. She told me that my little buddy, Warrior Prince Basil went to the Rainbow Bridge. I know what that is, cause we lost a lot of my chow family in the fire and explosion and karen told me all about it. It is a beautiful place where we go to wait for our family to join us when they are ready so we can all be together again. She said that Basil will have no more pain, no more vomiting, no more feeling bad. He can run around like he did when he was just a puppy. I know Basil will be patient and wait for Lynn and the family to join him some day but I am very sad for Lynn. I know she had a wonderful time with him and they had some good CC days this past week but Karen said that when a dog is sick and you know there is not much time left, you get even closer to the dog and then when they go to the Rainbow Bridge, that makes it even more hard on the ones that are left behind. Lynn, Karen and I both wish we could meet you in person. She would give you a big hug and I would give you a kiss on your cheek to let you know that we care so much about you and your family. Even though this is so very hard on you, it must have been so wonderful to see all those beautiful petals from the trees blow in the wind as Basil was leaving. That is just amazing and it is something you can cherish forever. That was just like the Warrior Prince, he wanted to make sure you were alright so he used his special powers to make all those petals blow to surround you in beauty and to make you smile as he left. Please continue to post on the DW as we are here for you and your family because Basil was our brother. As I said before, the DW is the most special thing there is when you can get a group of people and animals to feel so deeply about one and other without most of them ever knowing or meeting each other.
I will end by saying that Karen said to tell you that she loved that little guy so much, he was so strong and determined and he left us with such dignity and grace. There will never be another Basil. As for me, I am so very sorry for your loss.
One last thing, Basil, little buddy, do something for me. Order the biggest filet mignon they have at the Rainbow Bridge and enjoy, enjoy, enjoy.
Love to Basil always. You will remain in our hearts forever little buddy. FOREVER AND EVER.....
    Maddox and Karen

  • ..Dear Lynn, The Warrior Prince Basil, my little buddy is happily chasing critters with my best friend Ivy, The Wonder Dog,..I know that to be true ..and she watching over him so be comforted with that ..love, Cora-Belle the cattledog

  • ..Frannie,you will be back to yourself in no time...Cora-Belle

  • Hello everyone,
I am very sad to hear about Basil......My heart is very heavy. Lynn, you have beautiful memories to keep in your heart forever......
    Jan

  • Dear Friends,
As the day began I felt very lost and empty without my Warrior Prince. My mind flashes with memories, I cry, but the one thing I keep doing is coming back to the Daily Wag and all of you. You are my strength and support and I am so very lucky. Your thoughts are getting me through this day. To the powers that be, can you give my e-mail to Karen and Maddox to contact me personally if they wish. I would like to e-mail them personally if at all possible.
    I LOVE YOU ALL---
    Lynn

  • Oh no, I am so sorry to hear it is an ulcer. Those are very painful. Mom's first Frenchie Chloe got several of them and it was very hard to heal them. You might want to ask if you could wear a clear plastic cone-- Mom says that Chloe had an easier time getting around when she could see out the sides a little bit
My condolences to everyone who knew and loved Basil.

  • Glue Squad,
This is the last time I will post today but
I just wanted to say that since we formed the Glue Squad, our little buddy Basil is the first Glue Squad member to go to the Rainbow Bridge so i think it is only fitting for him to be Warrior Prince Basil, Official Glue Squad Rainbow Bridge Ambassador.
I think he would like that.
Kirby, get that out of your head. You will be here for a long time. Rebel, you got two Cheerios so that is better than nothing. Tell him you were sleep walking, that you thought you were outside.
Lynn, thank you for asking for our email addy. Karen already sent you an email.
    Love to all,
    Maddox
PS - Francesca, remember to keep your paws away from your eye.

  • To Lynn and each and every wonderful member of The Glue Squad...
We have lost a member of our family and it really hurts. As tears roll down my cheeks I remind myself that my sadness is a direct result of having had the joy of 'knowing' or 'cyber-knowing' The Warrior Prince Basil. And I for one would not trade having had that joy.
Lynn- You have been a wonderful mama to Mnsr Basil- and I know we all thank you for that- Basil included. And thank you for sharing him with us. I wish your kind of love and care for all of our fellow creatures.
Sending love and support to all of you on The Squad.
There is no doubt that Basil and all of his wonderful antics will be sorely missed- but fondly remembered.
    In kinship,
    Pia, Minnow and crew.

  • Hi Everyone, it's been a rough day here on The Daily Wag. I just want to say Good Night to everyone and wish you all a good night's sleep. May tomorrow bring love and comfort to Basil's family. Hugs to everyone

  • Hello everyone,
I know we don't say it often enough, but I for one would like to thank Francesca, Sharkey, GK, Martha and the Daily Wag staff for having this blog in the first place and for coming through for us in situations like this. I remember once before when we got bad news regarding Basil's health. It was on a Friday. The DW staff kept posting our comments the entire weekend. They didn't have to do that, but they did. And again today, with this sad news, they have kept posting our comments all day so we can read them and take comfort in each other over the loss of our little friend.
So, THANK YOU so very much to the DW staff for all that you do for us. We all appreciate it and you.
    Karen

  • I second everything you said dear one Karen. As the day is closing I need to tell you ALL that I could not have made it through this difficult day without all of you. I love the Daily Wag and all its bloggers, readers and the "Glue Squad." You are all the "Glue Squad" to me for you held me together. I know our dear Basil is watching us all tonight while eating that Filet Mignon. Sweet dreams to all the staff and friends of the Daily Wag.
    Hugs,
    Lynn

  • Good girl Frannie, health is before fashion.

I'm sure Martha could glue some rhinestones to flair it up a bit.

I'm sorry to hear about Basil's passing.

My thoughts are with all critters/people affected today...

  • Hello to all of our glue squad friends this morning,
We are still thinking so much about the loss of Warrior Prince Basil now our special rainbow bridge Ambassador. When my mom took a hot shower this morning she thought about how Basil's mom did the shower therapy to help him. It is rare to find so many caring and kind people like our glue squad family. Mom is going to make a donation in his memory to the animal shelter and when it is warmer we are going to plant sunflowers to remind us of the sunshine and joy he brought us each day.
Take care all, Abby the pug frenchie

  • OMG Fran, I also have an eye problem. It is called Dry Eye.My Mommy has to clean it out everyday and that hurts. It gets green gunk in it. Then she puts a gel in it to keep it from being dry. That does feel make my eye feel better. So Franny, I feel your pain. I hope you feel better real soon. I love your blogs and read them everyday. They make me smile.

  • Oh no, Franny! I am so sorry you've injured your eye and that you've been outfitted with...THE CONE. I have one of those hateful things to keep me from scratching my face when my allergies flare up and I. Do. Not. Like. It. Which reminds me, I need to hide THE CONE from my mom right now.

Sharkey, take good care of your sister, and, Franny, I hope you are healed soon!

    XOXO,
    Poco

  • Francesca sorry to hear so much sad news in one blog. I am glad that everyone is being so diligent with the care of your eye and the lyme disease. Take your medicine so that you can be back outside chasing those pesky squirrels. So sorry to hear about your friend Basil. Hugs and kisses to everyone. We are going to miss Basil's thoughts for the day.

Wishing you all a fun weekend.

    Kirby

  • the thoughts are so great and i hope the healing continues

  • Yuck! An ULCER in poor Fran's eye? Well she's old... (no offence) but pooooor Fran. But an ulcer doesn't really have anything to do with being old does it.
    Heartfelt love from LC
