A Lesson in Fiddleheads

Posted by F&S

It’s amazing how fast the gardens are growing now that the days are longer and the temperatures warmer.  We Frenchies think that if one stands still for a long enough period of time, one could actually see the plants grow.  Of course, who has patience for that when there are so many other things to get excited about?

Wow, I don't remember seeing half of these plants here yesterday. It seems as though they've sprung up overnight! Good thing that little house has a time-lapse camera capturing all this growth.

Sharkey, who are you calling a fiddlehead?

No, silly! These are ostrich ferns, sometimes referred to as fiddlehead ferns.

The 'fiddlehead' is what pops out of the ground, the top portion of the unfurling fern frond. This part is also called a crozier, after the ornamental staff traditionally carried by bishops.

Here are some better examples of what I'm talking about. Fiddleheads are considered a delicacy in the culinary world, but are only cut from the tops of the young plants.

If you look closely, you can see the feathery fronds peeking out from the inside of the fiddlehead. They are full of antioxidants, iron, and fiber!

When left to mature, the fiddlehead unravels, becoming a lovely plume.

  • ...hi frenchies, I have fiddleheads here at the farm/ranch..they are cool..but I have never tried to eat one..I am only up because I had to take a pain pill..Lucinda by accident shut my tail in the door, since i can't see I really freaked out..thought I was being attacked..so I must get some rest..hope all you glue squaders have a good day, later Cora-Belle

  • Good Morning F & S

We have those ferns growing in our yard I'll have to go out and bite the top off one and see how they taste.

Cora Belle you got your tail caught in the door OUCH!!! I'm glad my tail is just a stump one less thing I have to worry about.

I am very worried about my buddy Basil, mom got an email from Lynn yesterday and it doesn't sound like he is doing well. I said lots of prayers last night I hope he is okay.

Update on Choloe she is doing well at boot camp. She asked me to bring a file in a cake but I told her I didn't think that would work, I have to come up with a plan to help her escape..hmmmmm..........

  • Good morning ladies,
I am amazed at how much you know about all sorts of things. I never knew you can eat tops of ferns. Till we get back into the fall season, we will all know so much about all kinds of flowers, shrubs and trees. Oh yeah, and the tropical plants would be very interesting to learn about also.
Cora-Belle, you poor thing. I hope your tail is not broken. I know Lucinda did not mean to do that and she must feel awful bad about it. Accidents happen. I hope you feel better. Zoe, we have to come up with a plan to spring Chloe from Boot Camp. How long is she supposed to be there yet?
Hey Kirby Bear, where are you? Wherever you are right now, I bet you are having a good time with your mom and dad. Missy Chow, did you like getting groomed? Karen uses a hydrosurge. I like that.
What can we do for our little buddy Basil? I say my prayers for him every day and send him and his mom good thoughts. Basil, if we could all take a part of your pain, I think the Glue Squad would all be fighting to be first in line, that is how much we all love you. And we know what your mom is going through, she has to be strong even though she is so sad. When either of you feel bad, think of something that makes you smile, think of something that you did together where you had a great time. I would give up a whole bunch of my "cc" days if I could give them to you and your mom Basil. Cuddle up and enjoy the day.
    Love to all,
    Maddox

  • Good morning ladies!
Fiddle Head ferns...sounds interesting! I like to be tickled by the plants, too. We have violets in our yard. Mimi & our neighbor Fung love them, the Dads of the houses, not so much...
Cora-Belle...ooooh! I have a tail & getting it pinched in the door sounds like a surprise no pup should have. Can you put your tail all the way up or down? It helps to keep it out of danger. LOL
Zoe, so glad to hear Chloe is doing o.k.
Lots of prayers everybody for our buddy Basil. Don't want him to have pain. Just a good old nap.
    Rebel

  • Hello Ladies,
Fiddleheads huh? Never have seen one. Zoe, taste one for me and let me know what you think. Of course, anything in butter and garlic will be good. It sounds like everyone had a good Easter. Karen's probably wasn't the best with her stitches. My people brother had to have bone grafts too Karen, due to getting implants a couple of years ago. He looks mighty fine now. Speaking of my brother, we had a dynamite "cc" day yesterday. I still can't believe he took the day off work for Basil Boy and we just were lazy. He watched Cheers all day and I loved laying on his bed with him. When I was a young wippersnapper we used to watch Cheers all the time together. Bummer that he had to go back to work today, but I also had a visit from my people sister. I showed off and played with a water bottle and ran a bit. Sonya, I think you giving me that Warrior Prince name gave me powers and made me stronger. Mom was supposed to have a knitting class today, but she isn't going. She wants to just be close at home these days. I can't believe your tail got stuck in a door Cora Belle. Ouch and double ouch!!! Take that pain medicine and feel better. If I only could get a hold of my pink elephant medicine from right after my bladder surgery. You wouldn't even know what planet you were on. I will go back to resting. We have changed up my eating schedule so I eat at 11 in the morning and 8 at night. When I was young like Chloe, I would race to breakfast, now I just ease into the day. Slow and easy. Oh, and could you all believe that Mama Martha did not have a photo of Jude or Truman at the Easter Egg Hunt. F & S,and G.K. nothing of you. What is wrong with these photos? Well, maybe she is saving the best for tomorrow. Off to nap. Have a great day all, and thanks for the Warrior Prince's prayers. I love you all.
    Love & licks,
    Basil

  • Hi Sharkey, Francesca, and all the Glue Squad buddies,
We have fiddlehead ferns around the back of the house but I did not know their name until today! Will have to go check them out later on my yard patrol walk.
Cora Belle I really hope your tail feels better soon! Zoe hope you are recovered from the cheese curls and that the Phillies are doing better. Mom said it is so early in the season they are just getting warmed up. She is a big red Sox fan and I am still looking for a proper bandana. We only see Yankee and mets stuff in the pet stores.
Chloe where are you? Hope you get out soon. Missy Chow good job on your bunny ears photos. Congrats to Rebel on your new bed. Thanks to Nicky and kris for the great card. Basil Buddy hope you are having a good day and you are in our thoughts today. Hello to Poco, Sonya, Kitty and Maddox too. From Abby the frenchie pug

  • Oh my goodness I learned something new again from F&S!! ;-)
Fiddle-heads, now I know what all those Fern tops are called, I have always thought to myself that's what they looked like...thanks Frenchies...cute photos too!

Cora-Belle, you poor thing, I'm sure Lucinda feels so bad about your tail, and sweet Basil I hope you are comfortable, your family loves you as does the G.S. here...I have you all in my prayers...glad Choloe is doing well in her boot camp. :-)

    running again!
    delia & Kitty =^. .^=

  • Hi Girl Friends, &G.K.+Glue Squad, WOW! Learned something new again today-how great! Those fiddlehead ferns are sure beautiful and I would love to taste them because my Mom doesn't like me to eat grass so maybe I could eat them! These photos at Martha's Bedford farm are gorgeous and I love to see them! We have been lucky to have several days without rain lately and Mom and I work outside a lot more now! We loved seeing Martha's blog today about her Easter fun time and it was beautiful! Were you girls and GK out there helping the kids find the Easter eggs? Karen, sure glad you are finally feeling a bit better, dear heart! Cora-Belle, sure hope your tail feels better! You sure don't need any more pain! Sometimes my Mom steps on my foot and I yell like crazy! Zoe, thanks for the information you shared today-I hope to God that our wonderful Buddy Basil feels better real soon! Sure hope all of you great friends have a great day and I will check back later! Love, Dudley Do Right XOXOXO+

  • Ahhh THOSE kinds of fiddleheads. I thought you two were going to treat us to yet more of your talented Frenchie fiddle playing skills.

Cora-Belle oh you poor girl. I hope your tail is feeling better. Glad to hear that Chloe is handling boot camp well. Can't wait til she's back though. Missy Chow, it sounds like you had a great Easter Day. Karen it sounds like you are feeling better and thats great.

Basil Boy I hope you are resting comfortably today and snuggling up with your Mama Lynn.

Everyone have a lovely day.

  • I think I've dated a few 'fiddle-heads' in my lifetime! :)

I loved the photo of you Sharkey with the fiddlehead plopped under your chin!

I kind of like odd named things.

I would love a time lapse camera on the critters to see what 'really' goes on when no one is watching!

    Have a fiddly day! :)

    gail

  • ..back again...went to the vet ..tail not broken..just sore..Basil, you have the right idea, resting and watching t.v., that is what i am doing...we have a time lapse camera at the end of drive-way..amazing the number of animals four legged and two legged sneaking about at night...must watch the Orange county Housewives, later, CoraBelle

  • Hi Everyone, I haven't seen any fiddleheads in or around my yard, I really don't know if there are in the woods, I'm not allowed to far into the woods. But should I see them, I'll know what they are and how striking the ferns can be. Sharkey, you look so cute standing in the field with the fiddleheads. I bet it sure does tickle your chin.
Cora-belle, glad your tail is not broken only sore. Basil, sure hope you got alot of rest today and had cuddle time with your Mom. Well, my good behavior only lasted for a short time, last night Mom found a very small "snowfall" in the living room - aka...."p.t." well, that didn't go over well. But I could have done a major job on the "tp" the night before; some how, some way the bathroom door closed and I was in the bathroom all night, go figure!! Maybe I leaned on it during the night. ;) But I didn't touch anything, I should get credit for that. Maddox, I don't know if the groomer used a hydrosurge. I'll have Mom ask her next time I go for grooming. But it was a fun day at the "spa". :)

    Till next time,

    Missy Chow
    xoxo

  • Fiddle hum.... wonder if there's one named Faddle hehehe...
Cpra Bell, so sorry to hear about the door incident... ouch!!! My tail is lets' say not straight but it came that way when I was born. Yes!! I too want to know where are you Kirby? You need to remember to check in. In your last post you spoke of possible high water. You better not have gotten swept away! Zoe, you are correct, better not forward files to Choe. Maybe she can get out early for good behavior? Okay lets see if I have this straight Zoe's a Philly fan, Abby backs the Red Sox and I myself am a Chicago White Sox fan from way back. Anyone else like Baseball? Basil, are you getting and feeling my personal vibes aimed your way to feel better soon. Those vibes include kisses too! Super chilly in Central Ohio this evening. In Love and Peace Little Lola
