I remember these flowers from last year! These winter blooming plants are called hellebores.

Ah, yes, Sharkey! These are indeed Helleborus Orientalis, the botanical name of the very popular, early blooming shade perennial more commonly known as the Lenten Rose.

And, what looks like petals are actually called sepals, which protect the petals. The inner petals on Hellebores are called nectaries, which are cup shaped structures that hold nectar.

Unlike petals, which wither and fall off, these sepals stay on for many months at a time to protect the flower, which is why so many gardeners value these plants.

And did you know that most sepals tend to be green and cover the bud before it flowers, but when you can't differentiate between the petals and the sepals, they are called tepals?

Have I confused you, Sharkey? All you really need to know is that Martha loves her hellebores!

Franny, I could listen to you rhapsodizing about hellobores all day, but there are other flowers blooming around the farm, even though it's not officially spring yet.

Well then, Sharkey! Let's go and investigate!

  • Dear Sharkey and Francesca
Its rainning heavy in Malaysia and I can't go out for my daily walk and on other days are sunny and hot.. What are hellibores? Are they wild flowers that just pop out from the gound and grow? This is something new to me and they are pretty. Bye Sparkle.

  • Good morning ladies!
You two look so cute saying hello to the hellebores. I've found the daffy daffodils yesterday. I'm still waiting for them to wake up. The rabbits knibbled on the grape hyacinths. I need to do a better job out there.
I'm off to the vets today. Time for some pokes, pinches & owwwies.....I'll be sleeping this afternoon. Have a great weekend all.
    Your Pal,
    Rebel

  • Oh what beautiful Hellebores and what a great lesson about this plant! I will have to looking into them for my yard...Thanks for sharing this F&S!

Rebel and Nadia the Westie, hope your Vet checks come out OK...and Fergie, a belated B.D. Wish! How nice for Baby favor to say hello yesterday to Franchesca - so Franny, does that mean you were a rescue?

We are going to have a great weekend in weather, this makes me feel good and hopefully get out of my Winter slump and depression.

Have a great and safe weekend my fellow Glue Squader's and of course the furever pets...

  • Dear Girls
Francesca, thank you for sharing your knowledge about the Hellebores. Gran actually saw them at the local garden center yesterday, but didn't purchase any. Now she's thinking she better hurry back and pick up a few. I agree with Senor Rebel, both of you look extra cute today! Wonder how your brother is doing down in Tennessee? He's so handsome. Hugs and High Paws to All. Love Little Lola,
P.S. Senor Rebel, hope you get a special treat after your visit to the Vet.

  • Hello ladies, Kirby here.
Silly me, when I first read this I thought what you too know about hillbillies. After Daddy correcting me, I can now see that it’s hellobores plants you are talking about. I’m glad that you are enjoying the warm weather; I’m not. That means that those thunderstorms will be back with all the noise. I guess that’s another thing I like about the winter in addition to the cold. Another week in the books as they say. Have a good and safe weekend all.
    Catch you later, Kirby.

  • Hi Girl Friends &G.K., WOW! You girls sure must have had fun being outside in that lovely 70+ spring like weather! Finding those beautiful hellebores and commenting about them was terrific! I love to learn new things from you all the time! I'll have to tell my Mom to get some of those beautiful flowers! Hey G.K., sure hope you are doing well and having fun down there in Tennessee! Good luck buddy, my paws are crossed for you! Hey Rebel, sure hope you trip to the vet goes well and get lots of rest later! Sure hope all of you great Glue Squaders and newer friends are doing very well and hope your families are well, also! Hope everyone has a terrific weekend and stay safe! F&S, did you see baby Jude on her birthday yesterday?! I'll bet she had a great day! Love, Dudley Do Right XOXOXO+

  • Hello Ladies,
You are so educated on gardening and flowers. I just love it!!! I learned so much today. I can see why Mama Martha and you girls love them. They are beauties. It was 70 here yesterday. I am not ready for winter to be over. Those hot days I do not like. Rebel, let us know how the vet goes. Can you believe my 4 week check up from my surgery is next week. Wait until they see this Miracle Boy Basil. Momsays I am doing the best she has seen me in ages. I am still in the apartment at night though. Last night, I went right in and hopped in my bed. My appetite is best in ages also. Some folks would have given me up for a goner. I am sure glad for my great doctors and lo9ving family and friends. Have a great weekend all!
    Love & licks,
    Basil

  • I know! woof woof! It was amazing out yesterday! I got to go to the dog park!

  • Hi, Franny, Sharkey, G.K., & Glue Squad!
The weather looks great at the farm, girls, almost as good as it is here in Florida!! Kirby, you are too funny, thinking there are hillbillies on Martha's farm! We knew you girls would stay busy around the farm while G.K. is off pursuing his show biz career. The only thing we have blooming around here is Mom's lemon-lime tree(it grows both, we're not sure how, but Mom seems to like it, so we don't chew on it, but I, Fergie, have taken a lime and eaten it right from the tree!). It does smell good, though. Maybe we should tell Mom to get some other plants that flower. With everything you girls know about flowers, maybe you can suggest some that will be pretty for Mom and taste good to us! Good luck at the dog doctor, Rebel & Nadia! Basil, keep up the good work...it does feel good to feel good, doesn't it?
Thanks for the birthday wishes! I had a wonderful birthday, Mom and Lily fixed me a special supper that had one of my favorites in it-turkey meatballs with frozen cranberries!
I've got to take Lily outside now, and get some squirrel patrol time in before Mom has to go to town. Have a great day, and a fantastic weekend, everybody!

    Your pals,

    Fergie & Lily

  • Yesterday it was mid 60's here in NH!

The birds were chirping, the squirrels were buzzing up and down the trees! Glorious!

Let's hope Mother Nature is done with snow so we can look forward to 'mud and black fly' season! :)

    Have a super weekend!

  • Well, I am late, very late today. I was waiting all day for Karen to send me a text to let me know how my son did in Tennessee and don't you know, she said I have to wait till either his sisters or GK himself posts his experience from this weekend. Do you believe her? I am his father. Don't I have any rights here? What the heck.
Ok, now that I got that off of my furry chest, she did tell me that there are flowers everywhere down there and today GK saw a lady that looked very much like Martha and he just stopped and stared at her.
Hope everyone has a great weekend. If I can get anything out of her, I will let you know
    what is going on
    love to all,
    Maddox

  • Good Morning F & S

I'm with Kirby I thought you were talking about hillbillies. I'm thinking to myself what the hell? We have flowers popping up all over the place as well and Sunday is suppose to be beautiful :) I'm going to need my shades and a chase lounge the deck is calling my name.

So Friday mom left at dark and came home at dark - this work habit must change. But I think I heard her telling dad that she is finally caught up from being home sick those few days. Sunday we are going to work on the vegetable garden, it's almost time to plant the lettuce, swiss chard and spinach. I love to help, mom puts one in the ground and I move it after she leaves ;)

Basil I'm so happy to hear you are doing well and that's great news Cora-belle, cutting back on medication is always a good thing :)

Have a great weekend everyone enjoy this beautiful weather !!

    Zoe

  • * sigh * I am ready to read Saturday's post.... Is it here yet? or do they not post on Saturdays???

  • yesh!!!!

  • Hi glue squaders..I am disgusted..the person who was coming to take pictures of his great-grandfathers place just called.. can't be here this week-end..like yeah, you were suppose to be here yesterday..wants to make another date..yeah right, should have called sooner..we changed our schedule and waited and waited and waited ..unlocked all the gates and waited and waited..now we wonder if you are really related to the place..need to see some proof...would my fellow glue squaders be disgusted too?..I mean I was ready to bark crazily and behave badly...bummer! later, Cora-belle

  • OK thanks I had a feeling about the posts... supposedly daily, but more like " weekdaily" ! Woof!

    See you soon

    Jumps and Licks,
    Nadia
