All Paws on Set!

Posted by Pia

This week started off with a big woof- a visit to Martha and her crew- and a live appearance with some furry companions in need of homes! The show was called "Do Something," and was about how anyone can get involved and make a difference! Not surprisingly- the animal guests and I like to share the backstage tidbits with our fellow Daily Waggers and The Glue Squad!

I always get a bit nervous before these appearances- because there is so much people need to know about how to help shelter animals, I feel especially responsible for conveying that information as clearly as possible.

Martha and I talked about so many ways people can help: whether you are an amateur photographer or a professional artist/photographer- you can help animals put their best paw forward by signing up to volunteer in a variety of ways. For example, taking photos/videos of animals for a local shelter or rescue group is a wonderful way to help. Animals need to be seen to be saved- and the better their photo, the better their chance of finding an adopter online.

Martha showed the fabulous animal photos taken by celebrity Richard Phibbs whose talent has already increased adoptions for residents at The Humane Society of New York. We also talked about how to find or join other artists/photographers donating their talent to homeless animals through HeARTs Speak.org.

For those of you who want to devote some of your time online to saving lives- there are lots of easy, free ways to showcase adoptable animals on your Facebook Page, through Twitter, email- or by offering a way for viewers to search for adoptable animals from your own website! See the search on my website!
Anyone- regardless of age, location, talent- who wants to "Do Something," to help the animals, can find a way!

A big thanks to Martha, producer Barbara Fight, associate producer Allie Wyman, the talented crew, the devoted fosters and rescue groups, Jennifer Warner Jacobsen, and finally my amazing friends who accompanied me. The animal guests and I greatly appreciate everyone's efforts to be a voice for shelter animals in need.

Please be sure to click on the animal's links below and to spread the word on how anyone can "Do Something" and be a voice for shelter animals!

  • Morning Dr. Pia,
Wow, thanks for showing us what it's like getting ready for Martha's program.
Ya know that whole Emmy thing, well, when I moved to Mimi & Papa's I thought all those chair legs were my personal trees (they were very understanding). I'm all straightened out about that now.
You have some really great friends & I like to see the photos of them.
I had a suprise yesterday, Mimi gave me a bath. I was really good guy. Now I look so good to see my Dr. Becky tomorrow. Yep, it's time for the annual check up. I love my Dr. Becky! She holds me just so & talks to me real soft. Sometime I give her a kiss....
Have a great day all. I'll check in later to see what's up.
    Your Pal,
    Rebel

  • Hello ladies, Kirby here.
And hello to you too Dr. Pia. I saw the show and it was great. You said that the pit bulls were a misunderstood breed of dogs. Boy, I’ll second that. Down here in the south having a pit bull means only one thing; it’s a fighting dog. That’s what they do with them here. When they train them, they starve the dog and beat it. This will make it mean. We had a neighbor at one time who had a pit bull and wouldn’t feed it in an effort to make it mean. While my neighbor was away, Mommy would go and feed it. They never could figure it out why the dog liked my Mommy so much. The dog disappeared one day; most likely lost a fight. Poor little fellow.
    Catch you later, Kirby.

  • Good Morning Dr. Pia,
Great segment with you and all the pets that need a fur-ever home! I especially liked Satchmo and Sascha. Dr. Pia you looked adorable, your love for what you do shows through. :-)

Kirby Bear, it makes me sick to hear that this still goes on with Pit Bulls, people should turn them in...isn't fighting dogs against the law there? I just hate the thought, so very, very sad.

Thanks again Dr. Pia for what you do. :-)
    Take care,
    delia & Kitty =^. .^=

  • Hello Dr. Pia,
I guess Mom is daydreaming or something. When was the show on so I can access it? I loved seeing all the behind the scenes things. Satchmo looks like a real pro in front of the camera, but little Mango looked scared. Follow up on their forever homes. Maybe they will even join the Glue Squad. Kirby that is so sad what happens to pit bulls in your area. Mom and I can't even watch news or commercials about cruilty. It is terrible to think this goes on. But we are The Glue Squad and we can help many!!! Have a great day.
    Love & licks,
    Basil

  • Hi Dr. Pia, Thank you so much for this delightful blog post today! It was so wonderful to see you on Martha's TV Show with so many fabulous animals in need of loving homes forever! Martha sure did love all of those sweet babies just like you do! I love how people in my area are doing a great job helping take care of similar animals by talking about adoptions on TV and in our news papers, also! You are certainly a perfect, protective animal person! I do all that I can to protect animals, also! Thanks so much for sharing and look forward to seeing you on Martha's TV Show again! Have another great day and weekend! Jan & DDR

  • Good morning Dr. Pia,
I did not get to see the show. I was on Martha's show a couple years ago. Isn't it a beautiful studio? And the people are so friendly and helpful. I am so glad you and so many people like you do what they can to help the poor unfortunate animals that do not
have homes. That is how good things happen. There are people in this world who could care less about things like this but then there are people like you, rescue organizations, photographers like Richard Phibbs, people who have love in their hearts and that is a very good thing. I was so honored that you mentioned the Glue Squad in your blog. We care deeply about each other and I think I speak for all of the members of the Glue Squad when I say Hip Hip Hooray to Dr. Pia and everyone like her
    Love to all,
    Maddox

  • Good morning, how nice of you to talk about the animals! that pic of Martha on the wall is unbelievable! Is that really her? If my people adopted Tallulah, she and I could keep company while my people are away! It's time for my checkup, whoo hoo! I get to ride in the car! woof Woof! I am a Westie... and Tallulah is a westie mix! how I wish she and I were romping now. oops, my people are calling me. I don't like my checkup. Because of them touching your whole body, but the vet is REAL nice.
    Woof Woof!

  • Hi, Dr. Pia,
Wow, what a busy place Martha's studio is! How wonderful of you to help those animals without a home! Hopefully, they, and more like them find people who love them as much as our mom loves us. Kirby, such a sad story about the neighbor's pit bull! Mom's friends do a lot for Bull Terrier rescue, she says one of the saddest things in the world is the fact that people misunderstand Bullie breeds, and miss out on how sweet, silly, and smart they really are. She says it seems like while bad things can happen to any dog, Bullie breeds seem to have especially sad rescue stories, that people can be especailly mean to them. But she also says that the mean in some people, brings out the best in other people, like you and your friends Dr. Pia!
Speaking of silly, sweet, and smart, today is Fergie's birthday, and Mom and I are going to fix her a treat for her party later this afternoon! Everybody, have a great day!

    Your pals,

    Lily & Fergie

  • Once again Dr. Pia, thank you for your tireless work in trying to find homes for these wonderful shelter animals. It's so sad that there are so many all over the country who need homes. One site that I found because you featured them is Pet Pardons. First on fb now they have their own website.

    http://petpardons.com/
    http://www.facebook.com/petpardons

They do yeoman's work but it can stir your emotions-the sadness, the anger over the number of animals being killed at shelters is heartbreaking but because of their advocacy to save pets from death row there are stories with happy endings of animals being saved.

Thanks for your hard work Dr. Pia!

  • It is so wonderful that my Francesca's MarthaMom is helping make people aware of how needy dogs can be and ways to help, and you too, Dr. Pia!!! My First Mom, NewMom, Dad, and Auntie all help out Frenchies who are in trouble by volunteering with the French Bulldog Rescue Network. It's sad to think that Frenchies need help, isn't it? But they do; we've become very popular over the last several years (I mean, how could we not, look how cute we are!!!!) and the need to help our fellow frogdogs has grown a lot. Some people might say it has to do with when my beautiful little girl went to live with her MarthaMom, but that's not fair and I give 'stink eye' to anyone who says it.

  • Dr. Pia, what a good human you are...wish every animal could have a loving home..and all the mean animal disliking humans would could live on a desert island together...I ordered two of the collective nouns animals posters you featured last week..a gaze of raccoons..really? how cool..we do our best to help all the feral cats that get dumped here at the farm/ranch..a matter of fact..I just saw some leftover fried chicken go out the door for a snack for our little pals..they come up to us but we can't touch them...someone has been mean to them..Lucinda has made nice little hideaways for them to snuggle in and be warm at night...some people plain old disgust me...enough of my ranting..you fellow glue squaders have a good day..I must go see if the ferals ate all their chicken..over and out, Cora-belle

  • ..OH dear..I forgot to wish Fergie a happy birthday..I will fire off some barks in your honor...later, Cora-belle

  • Just a Happy, Happy, Birthday wish to Fergie!!! Have fun at the party---how old are you today?
    Love & licks,
    Basil

  • Woof! HB, Fergie!...

    I am new here, help!...
Now please tell me who these other doggies are

    Grr.....
