G.K.'s Countdown to Westminster!

Posted by Ghenghis Khan

As you all know, I am one of the lucky ones who was invited to compete in the 136th Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, held at Madison Square Garden in New York City.  In preparation, I am presently staying with my breeder, Karen Tracy and I am in training with my handler, Jan Kolnik.  The Chow Chows show on Monday morning at 10:15 and I will try my best not to disappoint.  Thank you all so much for being so supportive of my endeavors.  I’ll keep you posted and I hope you can watch on TV!

I've been doing a lot to prepare for Westminster next week, like staying in shape in Karen's exercise yard.

There are lots of toys for me to play with here, as well! Toys keep dogs minds stimulated, keeping us sharp and smart!

It's hard to believe that the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show begins on Monday! We've just received all of our official documents for the show.

As a precaution, Karen took me to the Blue Ridge Veterinary Office to get microchipped. I was a little nervous because I wasn't sure what that meant, but Vet Tech Melani Bowman and Dr. Carol Filchner made me feel at ease!

Another vet tech, Lisa Wenner, filled out my paperwork and explained that a microchip would be implanted under my skin between my shoulder blades. If I ever get lost, a vet can scan the microchip and find out who I am!

It's a very common practice these days and more reliable than tags. I don't usually wear a collar around the house because of my thick fur and a microchip clearly states that Martha is my owner!

First, they scanned my body to make sure I didn't already have a microchip. Like I'd forget about having a microchip!

The vets showed me a photo of Martha holding a Jack Russell terrier who is owned by Dr. Edward Shelly from the veterinary clinic! What a small world! By the way, all kinds of pets can get microchips. It's a really good idea!

  • G.K., we cattledogs will be watching..good luck!..You are already a winner in our book!..Hope our buddy Basil has good news about his dr. visit..everybody have a great weekend..over and out, Cora-belle

  • Hi Big Guy,
Those microchip syringes are big, aren't they? When I got mine I thought it was going to hurt likie crazy but I was worried for nothing. It didn't hurt at all. It is a good idea for all pets to have one. You just never know, someone could leave a gate open or your leash or colar could break when going for a walk and if you make a run for it, all the person that finds you has to do is to take you to a vet's office or animal shelter and have then scan you and that will give them the info they need to contact your owner. Kool, eh?
Well, I know how you feel about going to Westminster son. It is a little intimidating because it is such a prestigious show. But, you will be fine. And you have a lot of people that will be there to support you. And remember GK, just show the best that you can and win or lose, that is all anyone can ask for. Try not to sit in the ring and just have a good time in there.
Basil, keep us posted on your vet visit today. And remember, we are all here for you little buddy.
    Love to all,
    Maddox

  • Good Luck GK!!!

We'll be cheering for you and no matter what the outcome you're our champion :)

Basil good luck today at the doctor I'll be praying for you and don't feel bad I have to go today as well. I'm scratching my face again the last round of medication didn't work. My mom is a pain in the royal butt!! If she would just leave me alone and stop inspecting me from head to toe she wouldn't find anything. Last night she found something in the wrinkle on my face. Next thing I know I'm getting my face washed, she is smelling my face which didn't smell too good and before you know it she is on the phone with the doctor and I'm going at 1:45 today. PLEASE can a dog get some peace!!! Basil I want one of those potty patches so when it's cold I can just poo indoors - sounds good to me.

Well my friends the weekend is almost here and I'm sure you are all happy well not me! Super Nanny arrives tomorrow morning at 9 :( The only good thing is the kid is coming and she might bring a barbie doll or two ;) I'll have to start planning now TP and barbies look out.

Enjoy your weekend everyone and GK go knock em' dead!!!

  • Hi G.K.!!

I am so excited for you to be going to Westminster! I wish I could be going to, just think, a red Chow Chow and a red Standard Poodle, what a site we would be together!!

Even though I can't go, my Mom is going and she promised to cheer very loudly for you and take lots of pictures. Hopefully she can ge a really great one of you strutting your stuff and send it to Martha!!

Just remember, take a deep breath and relax when you are going into the ring. Hold your magnificent head high and know that you are a beautiful Chow Chow and you can hold your own against any competition. One more thing, have fun!! It's not every pup that gets to experience the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show!!!

    Good Luck!!!
    Finnegan

  • You GO big boy...
I know that you will do your best. Like Zoe & Cora Belle said, you are always our champion..Right Glue Squad?
Hey Zoe..your Mom is only doing what's best for you. It's great to get a rub down, but not an inspection, picking, poking & all that stuff.
Be a good girl this weekend. Great weekend to all. Will be checking in on Monday to see how buddy Basil did at the vets.
    Your Pal,
    Rebel

  • Go, G.K., Go! You're a GIANT of a dog compared to me, a little Pekingese, so maybe you'll do as well as the NY Giants in your competition. Good Luck...my mommy and I will be pulling for you!

If Zoe's mom reads this, I hope she will get Zoe some anti-bacterial/anti-fungal shampoo and some Mal-A-Ket wipes. I still scratch my face a little, but nowhere nearly as much as I did before my mom found these remedies--nothing my doctor did helped, except a prescription for prednisone, but there are a lot of side effects to long term steroid use and we didn't want to risk those. I hope Zoe feels better soon because it's not fun to have an itchy face! Our cute little smooshed faces require extra care daily, but in my case, at least, more effort is needed. I am so thankful my mommy adopted me and for my foster mommy who rehabilitated me after my original owner surrendered me to the local humane society. I was in a mess from flea allergies and having to live outside in Alabama (Pekingese are not an outside breed!), but now I am the queen of everything. I'm like a puppy Cinderella!

I have to go now. My mommy needs her iPad back.

All eyes are on you, G.K., and again, GOOD LUCK! I know you'll do GREAT!

    xoxo,
    Poco

Love seeing your toys, the baby Chow Chow, and the microchip you got from those nice vets! I have a microchip, also and so does my uncle's kitty-great to have! Best of luck my buddy! Sure hope all of you buddies are doing well today! Cora-Belle, you sound great! Zoe, sure hope you are OK and let us know about vet visit ASAP! Basil, also hope your vet visit goes well today and let us know ASAP, also! I will check The Daily Wag later to see how all of you are doing! Have a great weekend everyone! Love, Dudley Do Right XOXOXO+

  • Hello ladies, Kirby here.
Getting ready for the big show must take most of your time GK. I know that you will represent all Chow Chows while you are there. It’s now my kind of weather today, cold. It should be this way all weekend long. Sure hope it does I need to be outside more. I don’t go out much when it’s warm to hot. The AC feels too good to be out in the heat. Mommy said that she would have to turn it on if it didn’t get cooler. Well it’s cooler now. Gee, the weekend is upon us already. Time does fly when you are having fun.
    Catch you later, Kirby.

  • I have to rush this comment...sorry.
I'm glad that the micro-chipping did not hurt...wish the Humane society had done that to Kitty when I had her fixed, but it was not available then, now they do it for feral cats.
Best of Luck at the Westminster Show G.K. I know you will do great!
    XOXOX to all
    delia and Kitty

  • I know you will do great GK!! I had a chip put in too, but they put mine in while I was being "fixed"LOL. Maybe you could give me some tips from your trainer because my trainer keeps doing the same thing over and over:) Good luck today Basil. I will be saying a prayer for you.
Snow is coming tomorrow. Just a bit but it will be fun playing outside with Abbie in it. Have to tell mom to pick up all my toys outside because the last snow we had they were all covered up and I couldn't find them right away.
Zoe... you better be good for super nanny. I heard her telling mom she has the water bottle ready. Maybe if the weather is bad Aunt Ann wont go then super nanny wont come LOL.
Well, have a great weekend everyone. As Zoe would say... have some TP to chew. Mom thinks she is smart by putting it up higher, but I can still reach it :)

    Chloe xx

  • GK just be yourself and you will do fine. It is going to be very exciting going into the Garden and seeing how large of an event it is and all of the different dogs you will be meeting. Have a great time.

  • G.K. you are such a beautiful boy. I am so happy for you on being selected to the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show. As everyone else has said, no matter what happens you are already a champion. Have fun in the ring, you've got a great team of Karen and Jan and of course your dad Maddox loving and guiding you along the way. MommyM and Francesca and Sharkey have to be so proud of you.

Zoe you know how much your Mom loves you. Super Nanny weekend = Barbies heads & TP enjoy! Welcome aboard Poco hope to see you more often. Arrrghhh it just started snowing. Oh well. Have a great weekend everyone!

  • Hello Ladies, G.K., and all my buddies in the Glue Squad,
Checking in a bit late today as I just got back from the doc's. I will tell you about that soon, but first a big hooray for G.K. I am sooo excited for you buddy---it is an honor to know you. I had a micro-chip put in as a pup--no big deal, but great in case of theft or getting lost. Best of luck G.K, you are always a champion to old Basil. It looks like Mom will have to tape the Westminster Dog Show for me as it is my big day too. The specialist, the surgeon and my parents, decided it is best for me to have the bladder surgery. It is all happening so fast, Mom is in a real tizzy. Monday morning I report in and the surgery is in the morning. I will try and explain the best I can as to what is happening. The tumor is growing and although the bladder cancer antigen test showed that the tumor was 90% cancer free, there is still a 10% chance. We pray not,but the doctor and my parents said it can't just stay in me. So, in order to remove it, part of my bladder is removed also. A reconstruction will be done, and when I come home, no tumor and a new and improved Basil Boy. I will stay in the hospital up to 3 days and it is hard because of my Crohn's disease the meds to give after the surgery. We have to be careful---I don't want to be throwing up and have to go back in and be re stitched. It will be a little difficult at first for the first few weeks when I get home, as no stairs, even to the bed or couch. I have to be in a dumb crate at night and if they leave me, which I know Mom, and she will sleep beside the crate even and never leave until the stitches are out. You know Glue Squad, I have 9 lives, and each one you get me through. I know we need to think positive for G.K. on Monday, so we still want you to send prayers my way. You guys get me through everything and I know Mom will need you too when I am in the hospital. Thanks ahead of time for being great buddies and I am not saying goodbye--that is not Guido's style. I am just taking a blog break for a few days, and I will be in touch soon. Love ya all,
    Basil Boy

  • Holy Cow G.K. you are a high tech pooch!

Better safe, than sorry! We don't want to lose you!

Best of luck to you and I know you'll do the best you can! :)

    gail

  • Basil Dear Friend....you are in my "prayers" I pray that all will be fine and you come home healthy to be yourself again...and I'm also sending your human caregivers a prayer for their strength.
Stay strong Basil the Glue Squad is here for you!

    God Bless you All!

    Love from delia & Kitty =^. .^=

  • Basil, Buddy...tell your mom to keep us posted..I for one am going to bark and act real naughty outside when i see some critters..just for you my little friend!..you will be just fine..we all love you..Lucinda and James said to tell your folks that they are in their thoughts and prayers..be strong my little pal..Cora-belle p.s...bet your mom gets a crate big enough for the two of you to fit in..moms are like that!

  • Hi, G.K., Frannie, Sharkey, & the Glue Squad!
Good luck to you, G.K., when you go to Westminister! Remember, no matter what happens, you're a winner just being invited to compete! Last year, one of my cousins was invited and WON best of variety in Bull Terriers. My mom says my cousin just missed it this year, and so won't get to go, but that it was the experience of a lifetime just to be there!! Lily and I both have micro-chips, and mom says it makes her feel a whole lot better about taking her eyes off us in the back yard, much less when we're out and about with her. She does worry a lot...I mean, come on, she worries about us in our own fenced yard?? Basil, good luck to you, all paws crossed for you! Lily had to go to the vet today, she was sick with her allergies and skin again, she's sleeping now, but did say before she went to bed, that if Basil can be strong, so can she! We'll be watching for you at Westminster, G.K., and hoping for the best for you, Basil, Monday! Hope everybody has a great weekend, and get ready for a T.V. party Monday and Tuesday!!
    Your buddy, Fergie(and Lily, too)

  • Hi Glue Squad members,
I just checked in to see if there was an update on Basil. Well, little buddy, it sounds that you are going to be doing a little R & R the next couple of weeks. Don't you worry about sending prayers your way. We are all behind you 100%. And you tell your mom to keep on posting for you till you can get back on the computer to do it yourself. Also, tell her that we are here for her and your dad too. That glue that holds us together is strong enough to hold onto our extended families as well.
Now then Basil, since I can't send you a get well card I will send you one through my mind.
Picture yourself all mad cause you are in your crate and you look out the window and you see a beach with a whole bunch of girl doggies in bikinis romping and playing. Every day while you are getting better, you look out and there are more and more girl doggies on the beach and they are telling you to come out to see them. Finally, the day comes when you get released from your crate and you run out and pee all over them with your new and improved bladder. And before you girls go getting mad, none of you were on the beach. Kool, eh?
    hehehehehehe
    Love to all,
    Maddox

  • Hello everyone,
I am just giving you a little update. Today is Spa Day for GK. Condition coat, bath, blow dry, brush out, little trimming, nails, the works. Karen is getting good at poaching my fish and steaming my veggies. I am eating very well. Yesterday we went for a nice walk. Today will be a busy day so I don't know if we can get a long walk in today or not.
I am excited about the show that I am going to. I will try not to sit in the ring but sometimes I just like to sit down and observe what is going on around me. Basil, I will be thinking of you. I hope your surgery goes well and you have a speedy recovery.
    Your friend,
    GK

  • Dearest Basil, I finally got to read your latest blog comments and DDR and I are sending best wishes to you and your family for the surgery you will have on Monday!
