Cats, Canaries, and the Parakeet!

Posted by F&S

We Frenchies, were tucked away in our beds in the kitchen, when we overheard the cats in the other room having quite a conversation.  Bartok was rattling off all sorts of facts about the birds and it actually seemed like he knew what he was talking about!

There seems to a stranger trying to blend in with the flock, but the vivid color of these Red Factor canaries makes it difficult.

What they eat affects their pigmentation, so they are fed foods like carrots, oranges, and berries to keep them bright.

It's the same reason pink flamingos are pink, you know, because of all the shrimp they eat.

So if I eat a lot of shrimp, I might turn pink as well? How silly I would look! But Bartok, what were you saying about a stranger in the canary cage?

All I see that's different are these newly cut apple branches for the birds to perch on.

Wait a minute, what's that? Hey, that's no canary!

See? I told you. That's a blue parakeet that Martha bought as a songbird for her granddaughter, Baby Jude. While canaries make lovely pets (and snacks), parakeets can be trained to sing and talk.

Bartok, when did you become such a know-it-all? You sound like the Frenchies with all of those facts. I'm trying to nap in this ray of sun over here!

What? The dogs think they're so smart...I'm just trying to show that they aren't the only ones with brains in this house! We know things too!

Oh fine, I'll stretch out and nap in the sun, too. See if I ever try to better you again!

  • WOW
Those canaries are such a vibrant color. I wonder what the parakeet thinks being so different from the rest of them. I think that all the animals that live on Martha's farm are very intelligent, cats included. It must have something to do with the water. Hehehehe
Chloe, tell your mom to find a treat that you really like and only use it when you do your downs. Tell her to let you smell it and slowly move it down toward the floor. You will want that treat so you should go all the way down to get it. That is what they did to get ne to fo down for the Canine Good Citizen test.
I hope Cora-Belle is doing alright. I worry about her.
Glue Squad members, we have to send good thoughts her way. She is such an independent Cattle Dog and such a strong attitude to match. And we also have to let James and Lucibda know that we are thinking about them also
    love to all,
    Maddox

  • Hello ladies,
We've got to admit that the kitties are smart, too. They may not be as handy at chores like you two, but they do know what's cookin'.
Does the new little bird have a name? It is a very pretty blue parakeet. I think it would be nice to hear little birds sing in the next room.
    Have a great day all!
    Your pal,
    Rebel

  • Good Morning!!!

Yes it's morning and I'm on the computer - FINALLY! I hope my life gets back to normal soon but from the sounds of it mom is going to be really busy for the next few months.

Hey Furballs - why don't you jump on the side of the bird cage and rattle their feathers - that would be SO COOL!!!!

Glue Squad what is going on with Cora-Belle - please fill me in. Basil how are you feeling buddy?

GK stay positive you'll do fine at Westminster. No matter what the outcome we are all proud of you.

Well I'm getting the signal to sign off :(

  • Hello ladies, Kirby here.
I guess that cats are smart about some things but really dumb about others. Take this one who tries to get into my back yard and catch a bird at the bird feeder. He knows how to get into the yard, sneak up on the birds but hasn’t learned that I am watching and will chase him down. He does this all the time. One day he will not make it to the fence and I will teach him a lesson. Daddy says to watch out for those front paws or he will teach me a lesson. I just wonder what a cat can teach me.
    Catch you later, Kirby.

  • What awesome birds! I love seeing the cage and content ;-) mommie delia had a large cage with parakeets and canaries, but they did not get along, her cat at the time sleept on top of the cage never bothering the birds.

Yes, it makes sense the canary feed brings out the colors, just like it does for the flamingos.

mommie delia's cousin in Germany lost her beloved parakeet last month from a strange ailment, she just bought a newborn from a breeder, he is a rare grey with a blue dot on his face, and already is being trained, she's real good with birds as is her other cousin in Canada with Parrots.

We hope and pray that Cora-Belle is doing alright, and that we are thinking good thoughts for James and Lucinda. <3

    meeeuw to all,
    Kitty =^.!.^=

  • Hello Ladies & Furballs,
Yes, furballs. They aren't my favorites, but still I like them. I am glad Martha has a good wire on the bird cage or those birds would be dust. Mom says her Grandma used to raise canaries and she and Dad even had a few when they were first married. Very pretty!! My people brother used to have parakeets when he was a boy I hear. Now Glue Squad I have to tell you what I did yesterday---very out of character for me, but Zoe would be proud. You see, Dad is off on another ice fishing expedition and Mom had to have the Comcast guy come and fix some stuff. I did not like this one bit---no, no and no again. She should never have been alone with this person, soooo I had to show my authority and put in him his place. I really wanted to pee on his feet, but I just did it 3 feet away. Yes, my doggie door was open, but it let him know who's territory he was in and I was the boss. Then I took my meds and went back to sleep on the couch. Cora Belle, we may have our issues, but we still can show them who is boss--right??? Mom is happy---snow hopefully tomorrow--maybe 6-10 inches they say. Have a great day.
    Love & licks,
    Basil

F&S, I love your comments all about the beautiful Red Factor canaries and the blue parakeet that Martha bought for her beautiful granddaughter, Jude! Cora-Belle, James, and Lucinda my thoughts and prayers are with you and sure hope all is well! Hope all of you buddies have a great day again! Love, Dudley Do Right XOXOXO+

  • Hello F&S and GK...
Maddox...mom has tried everything. I do really well at home but when I get to school I just forget all my training. Then my teacher thinks we didn't practice all week. Now she wants mom and I to practice sitting together on the floor for 20 min each night with me NOT moving. Yeh right. Like that is going to happen. Mom is suppose to put my leash on then wrap it around her leg so I don't move. That sounds terrible. I don't know what this is suppose to accomplish.LOL Thank God I only have 3 more weeks left of this.
Basi...Zoe will be very proud of you. She does that all the time. :) I hope you and Cora-Belle are both feeling better!!

Hope everyone has a great day!

    Chloe xx

  • Franny and Sharkey you certainly do have your paws full with those furballs. You just know that if anything ever happened to MommyM's birds, they'd find a way to point the finger at you two.

Basil it sounds like Guido made a guest appearance at your home. Zoe, sweet Cora-Belle was having problems walking the other day so she wanted to take a few days off to rest. Sending out warm thoughts Cora-Belle.

  • Not only do I read the Daily Wag to get my fill of the happenings around your world, but I always learn new things!

I didn't know what a canary ate influenced it's colors. Incredible!

I better stay away from blueberries or I might start looking like Violet Beauregarde :)

  • Hello all,
I just had to get on again as I have been so worried about Cora Belle. Your Mom and Dad take such good care of you Cora Belle. Now, if I could eat anything I wanted and didn't have the Crohn's Disease, I would have me a bowl of Chicken Soup. Remember how Tasha loved her poached chicken in the last. Not that you and I are in the last by any means Cora Belle, I just remembered how that really was an incentive for her. I got to have a little too then. Well, Cora Belle, eat your Chickie Soup or some poached chicken for both of us and cuddle under your sweater or blankie. I love ya and am thinkin' of ya. I am a poet and don't know it. Hehehehehe as Maddox would say.
    Love & licks,
    Basil

  • Way to go Basil!!! I love to pee on people - and the entire time I'm wagging my little knob of a tail ;)
