What We Didn't Know About Donkey Hooves

Posted by Sharkey

As you may know by now, I love playing with our miniature donkeys, Clive, Rufus, and Billie.  The other day, I was running in their paddock trying to get them to play with me, but they said that they had something important to do in the stable.  At first I thought they were just brushing me off, but now Franny and I know a little bit more about our donkey friends.

Where is that Sharkey? I can hear her barking and I think I know where she is.

Franny, I'm in with the donks trying to get them to play tag! Run, Billie! Run, Rufus! Run, Clive! Come on, I want to play!

Sharkey, you should have gotten here sooner. We would love to play with you, but we've got an appointment in the stable for our daily hoof washing.

Oh come on, Billie! Why bother washing your hooves? They'll just get dirty again tomorrow! Skip it and stay out here and play with me!

Sharkey, we donks must think of our health. Hoof problems aren't common for miniature donkeys, but the risks are greater when the ground is soggy from rain and snow.

Washing hooves really doesn't take all that much effort. Dolma leads us right to the stable shower.

To keep us from bolting, Dolma hooks our harnesses to a strap in the shower. Of course, there are treats for good behavior.

And then the fun begins and we get our hooves sprayed clean. We've been told that when the ground is wet, it becomes a breeding ground for all kinds of bacteria. Yuck!

This is truly fascinating! I'll keep my distance to avoid getting wet.

All that bacteria can cause a number of hoof problems for donks and horses alike! Horrible infections like thrush, white line disease, lamanitis, and even abscesses can cause big health problems.

All clean again!

You see, Frenchies, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Wow, I learned a lot today about hoof hygiene! And I'm so glad Dolma takes such good care of you. I better go home and ask to have my paws washed after running in your paddock.

  • thanks frenchies for the info, we had mini goats and had to clean their hooves and trim them..now that was exciting ...I think back about all the cool things i have helped with over the years here at the farm/ranch..it wears me out...I must take my meds and get back in bed...fellow glue squaders have a good day..later, Cora-belle

  • Hi Gals,
Wow, we sure do learn a lot from you! Had no idea the donks took showers! I know about dirty feet myself. Papa bought a new door mat that says "Wipe Your Paws". Guess that means me..lol
Hope all my friends are having a good morning. We'll check back in later to see what's going on. Thinking about G.K., Karen & Jan. Hope they're having a good time.
    Your Pal,
    Rebel

  • Hi Girls,
The donks look great. I bet they enjoy the treats after they get their hooves cleaned. I know I enjoy my treats after a bath and I feel all clean again too.
Basil, I am thinking about you and praying for you. I am also thinking about Cora Belle. Karen's mom has a 15 year old cairn terrier that is blind and she does great. She knows where everything is and she walks around the yard and the house pretty good. And Cora Belle, you have two fabulous people who love you and are taking excellent care of you and that goes a long way. Zoe, I bet if that baby came to your house with a Barbie Doll or two, you could care less if it screamed all day long. hehehehehe
    Love to all,
    Maddox

  • Good Morning F&S and cuttie GK,

I love cleaning my paws too. Mom keeps a big pail full of water outside for me so when Im done digging up her garden LOL I can clean them right off and she has no idea I was digging. Pretty smart, aren't I??
Well, all the snow is gone but I sure did have fun the past few days playing outside with Abbie. I have training again tonight. Mom said we didn't practice too much but we will be fine.LOL.
Brother Jimmy came home from Detroit yesterday. He was playing hockey there. I had so much fun helping him pull all his hockey equipment out of his bag. Mom was laughing at me so I kept on doing it. But I don't think he was too happy. He kept yelling my name to stop, but did I???? No way, I was having too much fun.
Well off to have some breakfast then wait for Aunt Denise to get here. She cleans on Tuesdays and I love dumping the bucket of water over while she is cleaning. LOL
Hope everyone has a great day. Oh, and F&S how did GK do in his show? Don't know if I missed the post or no word yet. Let us all know.xx

  • Donks Hoof Hygiene, learn something new everyday from you two ladies. Rufus, Clive, and Billie always look happy so I guess they don't mind coming inside once Dolma gives their hooves a bath.

Chloe I saw photos of you playing in the snow and you looked like you were having the time of your life. Cora-Belle, I know you asked the glue squad not to feel sorry for you so I will be brave but it still makes me sad about your eyesight. I do know that Lucinda and James love you very much and they will always be there for you.

  • Oh those cute Donks ;-) the long eared gang, Clive, Rufus, and Billie!! they are so well behaved standing still allowing Dolma to wash their hoofs. I'm sure Dolma picked the bottom of the hooves out to prevent thrush...boy does that ever stink :-(

The ten point Buck came yesterday and drank water out of our front yard bird bath, we were about 10 feet from him watching out the window. Kitty watched intently, then he crossed the street and slipped on the ice, but made it before cars came.

Our little fur-friends here that need special attention, God Bless you and your human parents. <3

Off to make a cup of Java and feed Kitty who is laying across my arms while I type... :-)

  • Hello ladies, Kirby here.
Showers for donkeys??? Mommy Martha thinks of everything. I’ll bet the water is even heated so you don’t have “cold feet” when you go back out side. I’ll bet the donks get an apple or carrot for their treat. Last night Daddy called me and handed me a treat. I stood and looked for a few seconds and he said, “Well Kirby you could just reach up a little for this treat.” I thought, “Yeah, and you could just reach down a little too.” I took my treat, ate it and laid back down again. This time my back end was to him; that should tell him how I feel. Now that’s what they call body language.
    Catch you later, Kirby.

  • Hello Ladies,
You girls certainly keep us informed well on the world about us. I never knew such a thing about donkeys. I would love to have a warm foot shower after going out in the cold elements. They are quite lucky.Yesterday I really enjoyed all your comments.Sonya, you crack me up with the PSI thing.I laughed and laughed.Zoe, I agree with you fully on the baby thing.Little ones are even doubtful--Mom's neice was here one time with her 3 year old and she called me a nice CAT.What in the world.I have glorious ears and anyone thinking I am a cat.Kitty, I want you and Rebel to stay clear of the hawks. We smaller creatures have to be careful.Dudley, your Mom saw an eagle with the Dachshund, my Mom saw a coyote walking down the middle of the street one day with a Dachshund. Then the old man came looking door to door and we had to tell him what we saw.How sad!!Now Cora Belle, I don't like you going blind one bit, but Jim and Lucinda are caring for you very well.I had a lab friend who lost her eyesight at a very young age and had glass eyes. She did very well with loving parents. They love you lots. And Cora Belle you motivate me to have a positive outlook being my mentor so to speak on age.I have told Mom that she and I have to enjoy each day and be happy we have each other. The panic she had, was blood in my urine. It is the tumor having blood, not my organs the doc said, and my options are limited at this point. They are keeping a watch on things, but thank God I don't have to go in for an exam again until Feb. 10th on the you know where parts.I am feeling good so she just needs to settle down.Dad and my people brother are going to an ice fishing tournament this weekend and she and I can relax a bit, so that is good.More meds before I can eat.Better go, as I am hungry.Have a good day all!!
    Love & licks,
    Basil

  • Dear Franny and Sharkey:

My name is Kurdt and I am a brindle Frenchie and will be 3 yrs old (or thereabouts) this summer. My dad found me on an abandoned golf course 2 summers ago and he and my mom fattened me up and got me well because I was very itchy from poison ivy. Now I have a great life with my older Boxer sister, Allie (she is 11 and very gray but we don't talk about that) and my CatBro Storm (he is seriously crazy). Anyway my mom has been reading me your columns for about a year and I have a crush on Franny because looking at her is like looking in a mirror. Wait, my mom said that was egotistical so I take it back. Anyway, thanks for all the entertainment, Girls. And when my mom figures out how to do it she is going to send you a picture of me. Love and Frenchie licks, Kurdt
