Have You Seen The Martha Stewart Orchid?

Posted by Sharkey

A beautiful and fragrant orchid appeared suddenly in the kitchen the other day and as I was admiring it, it dawned on me that I had seen it before.  I had a feeling that it was on one of Martha’s blogs from years ago and sure enough, after a little investigation, that’s where it had been!

What are you looking at, Sharkey? That looks like a posting on Martha's blog from 2007!

It is, Francesca! I noticed that Martha had put her namesake orchid in the kitchen and it prompted me to look up some information about it!

Oh right, I remember this! Art Chadwick, Sr. and his son Arthur, from Chadwick & Sons, appeared on Martha's show to present her with the orchid that they named for her. Let's take a closer look at it in the kitchen!

Here it is! Wow, look how large the flowers are! I don't think any of Martha's other orchids blossom this big!

The botanical name is Laeliocattleya Martha Stewart and is registered with the Royal Horticultural Society. It's a cattleya hybrid.

Did you know this type of hybrid takes seven years to bloom, Franny? After that, it will bloom every year. You're seven years old. Can you imagine waiting your whole life to see it blossom?

That's sure one special orchid! Cattleyas are a tropical flower, right? They typically grow in South America.

That's right Franny. They are often used in corsages, but I think this one would look nice behind my ear, don't you think?

They are characterized by three narrow petals and three wide petals with ruffly edges. They also have a lovely sweet fragrance. Smell it, Francesca!

  • Good morning ladies,
Wow, now that is an orchid. That is a nice way to wake up in the morning. I bet it is even prettier in person. Martha must be so honored to have a flower named after her, especially one as beautiful as this.
Today is my kind of weather again, nice and crisp. We are supposed to get rain and then snow after that. we chows hate to get our feet wet when it is raining, but let it snow and they have to chase us to get us back in the house. When it rains, I do the Chow Rain Dance. Lift your foot, leave it up till you can't stand standing on the wet grass, then put it down and lift another one, etc. I look like a dork when I am out walking in the rain. hehehehehe Karen said GK doesn't mind walking in the wet grass when she walked him at shows where it was raining. What's up with him? Kirby Bear, what are your thoughts on walking in the rain? If you don't mind it either, I may have to man up and just do it. YUK.

  • good morning ladies,
What a beautiful flower! I love to smell flowers, too. I have had a snoot full of pollen and some on my back...achoo is right!
Did you all have a good night's sleep? It is warm(for January) and rainy..a great day to nap. Mimi sorted laundry and I thing there is a pile of clothes calling me.

  • Hello ladies, Kirby here.
I’m not much into flowers but I do have to say that this one is really pretty. My Mommy tries to grow flowers but doesn’t have much luck with them, but when it comes to vegetables she can grow them big time. Maddox is right about the rain. I don’t like to get my feet wet so I stay out of the grass when it is raining. There is a wooden lamp pole in front of my house and I water it daily. When it’s raining I don’t like to get in the grass around it. I stay on the sidewalks when it is raining. On the other “paw” when it snows I just love to go out in it. We don’t get much snow down here but it does snow sometimes just to make me happy.
    Catch you later, Kirby.

  • Good Morning F&S,

What a beautful flower. I love to eat flowers in the garden. Mom loves Orchids but every time she has one she kills it. I don't know what she does, but she kills everyone she gets LOL.
Maddox I love walking in the rain. I even like to lay outside in the rain. Mom bought one of those awnings to keep me dry, dut I never lay under it. haha.
Oh, and that darn beaver is back. I haven't seen him in a couple days, but this morning while I was enjoying a nice little nap, he was wacking his tail in the water and woke me up. One of these days I'll get him.
I'm all signed up for my next training. I start next week. Mom said I will be the biggest dog there. A bunch of little yappers LOL and all have issues. Not looking forward to it but I will do good to make mom proud of me.

Well, have a great day everyone.

    Chloe xx

  • Now that's what I call an Orchid! first thing came to my mind was the size and using it for corsages...and to boot it has a sweet aroma? My mom had a registered Peach named after her...I have a small Orchid from Mothers Day and it still is alive, the first for me!
Kitty is running around the house this morning after diving into some cat-nip....she's so funny.

Hey Maddox, is it Maddix or Maddox and Cora Belle is it Cora Bell or Cora Belle??? just wondering...I'm a literal German and notice things like this...he he :-o ;-)

  • Hi Girl Friends, &G.K., WOW! That orchid named after Martha is absolutely beautiful, just like Martha is! You girls are so lucky to find so many lovely things inside and out to share with all of us to enjoy, also! We just viewed Martha's blog and she had some beautiful orchids in her new greenhouse made for her tropical plants-love seeing that too! It's freezing outside this morning and is supposed to be cold and sunny today. I love to lay in front of Mom's woodstove to stay warm when it gets so cold. Sure hope all of you have a great healthy, happy day today! Love, Dudley Do Right XOXOXO+

  • Hello Ladies,
What a gorgeous orchid is right!!!!! Mom and Dad have a small greenhouse and Mom loves raising orchids. We have about 12, but nothing as large and beautiful as your Mama Martha's. I think it would look lovely behind all the girls' ears. Chloe, I have never seen a real live beaver. Mom and Dad have on the rivers up to the mountains, but not me. I can sympathize with not liking to walk in the rain. When it was really cold, like 5 below, I did the hold your paw up when I did my business. That day Mom's hair even froze, as it wasn't quite dry. Dudley, I think you and I live pretty close together. I live in Lakewood, Colorado and it is snowing this morning. The golden retreiver, Tucker, I told you of, yesterday, was out back playing fetch this morning and having a grand time running in the snow. Tasha used to love playing in the snow. Me, now I enjoy sitting in front of the fireplace. And I think it is calling me---Basil, come and get warm. I better be off and rest. Cora Belle, you are resting lots also aren't you? Just keep watch on all the critters. Have a great Wednesday all!!
    Love & licks,
    Basil

  • Martha's namesake orchid is certainly pretty and it goes so well with both of your fur coats. You should put G.K. next to it and see how handsome his coat looks as well. Hope all is quiet and well with everyone.

  • wow..what a pretty orchid..Lucinda has horrible luck with orchids..but she and James can grow dahlias really well...Kitty watch out for that naughty coyote..it may be checking you out for lunch..have your mom get a whistle and blow it when it comes in the yard that will scare it...you chows are funny about wet feet, when I was younger I would hang out in the rain, so Chloe i understand why you like it ..cool and refreshing..Lucinda says my name is Cora-Belle..but sometimes I forget to put the "e"..Lucinda says we are losing our minds together..Dudley did you have frost at Puget Sound this a.m.?Basil, yes, I rest a lot..today my plan is do absolutely nothing..maybe a few quick barks at the otters when we go out...Rebel your funny, curling up on laundry..and Zoe where are you today..probably on a seek and destroy mission... everybody have a good day over and out..cora-belle

  • And one more thing.....I forgot to ask all of you this morning with knowledge of Chows, if there is such a thing as a Black Chow. Mom was at the grocery store the other day and low and behold a guy looking just like G.K. was dumped in the parking lot and needed a home. A man took him home with him, but Mom said he was really following them around and soooo sweet. Is there Black Chows?
    Love & licks,
    Basil

  • Ooh what a beautiful orchid. The color is vibrant.

And yes, Sharkey I do like it tucked behind your ear.

Oh wait, do I sense a Hawaiin themed blog soon?

    gail

  • Basil I saw a Black Chow on TV last week...don't remember where, but we were all in ahhhhwe of it!

Hey Cora Belle, maybe mommie delia will show me how to blow a whistle, she says I'm pretty smart ;-) LOL!

    delia & Kitty =^.!.^=

  • Hey guys,
Yes, there are black chows. We come in 5 different colors. Red, like GK. Then there is black, cream, cinnamon and blue. There are different variations also. There are light shaded reds which have a white tail and "pants" and there are solid reds, self-red, etc. One more fact on chows, we are born with pink tongues. Then they turn the blue-black color. If our tongues keep a little bit of pink in them, we can't be shown because that means we have weak pigment.
I spelled my name wrong earlier today. Sorry about that Delia. I spell it with an o, not an i like I had it. I was so crazy thinking about getting my feet wet when it rains. hehehehe
    Until tomorrow,
    Maddox

  • Hi Everyone,

Mom finally let me send a note to all of you. I so enjoy reading of everyone's adventures each day and it makes Mom and me start the day with a smile. Yes, there are Black Chows because I'm one. I found my "forever home" when Mom & Dad adopted me. I love the cooler weather now and hate to come inside, not too crazy about the rain, I always have to be towel dried but try to run by without getting caught. Love the snow!
    Stay well !

    Xoxo
