A Fox Hunt at the Farm

Posted by F&S

Now that it’s winter, food is becoming scarce for many animals in the wild.  In fact, it has been brought to our attention that a couple of hungry red foxes have been spotted very near to our house.  While we, Frenchies, are being very cautious outdoors, we did come across something very interesting the other day.

Sharkey! Do you smell what I smell? I think we're on the trail of a red fox! I'm told that the red fox has a variable diet, favoring the seasonal availability of small mammals and birds.

Francesca, I heard some of the crew say that they saw a couple of foxes recently right near our house! That's why the cats are locked inside and why we need to be especially careful out here!

Sharkey, I also heard that red foxes are the leading animal hunted for the fur in the winter, so they need to find a good hiding spot. Where would you hide if you were a fox?

In the winter, foxes live in dens or burrows underground to keep their litter of pups warm. They usually stay close to a source of water for drinking...Hey, I have an idea!

Francesca, I don't know about this. Do you really think a fox would take shelter in a drainage pipe? I'm too scared to look!

Hello? Are there any foxes hiding in this drainage pipe? Sharkey, I don't see a thing in there!

What is it, Franny? Did you pick up the fox's scent again? If there really is one here, we should be able to smell where he's been marking his territory. Too bad he doesn't realize this is our territory!

Sharkey! Look! I was tracking something all along...it's...a jaw bone!

Let's take a closer look at this!

Hmm, judging by the length and by the placement of the incisor and canine teeth, I believe this is definitely the lower jaw of a fox! What do you think, Sharkey?

I think you're correct, Franny! It looks like one poor fox has met its end! But that also means that there's something bigger than a fox out there to worry about!

  • Hello Ladies,
It would appear that your super sluethness (I don't think this is a word, I just made it up), has led you to a big find---probably a coyote????!!!!! I am getting scared just talking about it. Mom guards me very carefully due to the wanderings of a coyote or two. Remember when we were just talking about them the other day? Be very careful ladies. The vet told Mom that the fox probably wouldn't go after me, except to want to play, but a coyote. Now I am scaring myself. I better get back under the covers after breakfast and meds. Hope everyone had a great weekend. Mom and I sure had a fun and relaxing time. Now Dad and brother, on the other hand---ice fishing tournament was not the best. This was a bad year. They had fun together though. Everyone have a great day and stay away from anything bigger than a squirrel.
    Love & licks,
    Basil

  • ..be careful girls..take that from a farm/ranch dog from way back..foxes, coyotes can be trouble for little doggeers...In my younger days those foxes would have been worried..later, Cora-belle

  • Good morning,
Foxes, coyotes.... You girls better be careful when you go outside. That is a very big farm you live on and who knows what wild critters are living there too. Cora-Belle should make a tape of her "scare the critters away" barking and send it to you so you could play it over a loud speaker when you are outside, that way you would be safe.
My little buddy Basil, sorry about your dad and brother not doing well in the tournament but they can always go to the grocery store to buy fish. hehehehehe Just kidding. i am sure they will have more success next time.
Well, I think I am going to see what is n Animal Planet and then decide what I am going to do for the rest of the day.
    Later,
    Maddox

  • Wow a jaw of a Fox? I have not seen our Fox for months, but like I mentioned before the Coyotes left their tracks right to the Patio...mommie delia worries about me if I'm out at night, but I guess I have to be sharp on my paw toes.
The squirrels are chasing after each other, it's so funny to watch, guess they are getting ready for the Spring ritual...we even heard some birds yesterday, including the loud crows and Red Tail Hawks.
I can't wait for Spring...mommie delia always goes through depression this time of year...so hurry Spring!
All my fur-friends here, be careful of the Coyotes and Fox.
    Kitty =^, ,^= and mommie delia {(~!~)}

  • Hey Ladies!
Wow, a jaw bone, how majorly cool. Did it taste good? We smaller one do need to be careful outside in the winter. We haven't seen the coyote for a while or a fox either.
There was a story in our paper about if people need a coat 'cause it's cold, then the short hair dogs do, too. There was a picture of a lady putting a coat on a chihuahua/yorkie mix. Mimi thought he was sooo cute! Was he in your paper? She said it came across the wire...what's up with that?
The Grandkids slept over Saturday night. We had lots of fun. They were playing sports games on the Wii.
It's cloudy here today, just right for a snooze!
    Good day to all
    Your pal,
    Rebel

  • Hello ladies, Kirby here.
People hunt foxes for their red fur??? Well I guess that I had better watch out during the winter. After all, I have red fur just like GK and Maddox. While I was in Anchorage one summer, I was walking with my Daddy and we found a red fox. He was about 80 yards away and when he saw me he started barking and jumping up and down. I guess he thought that I was a fox too. I didn’t bark back; just watched him make a fool out of himself. A fox is no match for me but that coyote would be a tossup. I’m not really a fighter but a lover. Speaking of which, I have to run to the fence and get those girls next door running and barking. They do that when I get near the fence; go figure.
    Catch you later, Kirby.

  • Hi Girl Friends &G.K., WOW! This sure is an interesting and even a little scarey blog posting you girls did today! Hearing about red foxes at your Bedford farm reminds me about a coyote that has been in our yard several times and mostly at night. Your photos and comments are superior and helps me understand a lot about bigger critters. My Mom NEVER lets me go outside by myself even though we have fences all around our home since she found poops left by the coyote and my Uncle saw coyotes when he was walking his daughter's dog at night in our neighborhood. It scares me, but when I smell they had been here, I bark like crazy! Loved reading the Glue Squader's comments about coyotes and foxes! Our weekend was cloudy and cold all day Saturday and rainy all day Sunday-hope the sun comes out today! Hope all of you have a safe and healthy day today! Love, Dudley Do Right XOXOXO+

  • "Previously on PSI..." Ladies, ladies, ladies, please be careful out there. Even the best of PSI Investigators can fall into trouble if they are not careful. Do you think that maybe the coyotes who hang waaaay too close to the farm for my taste had a go at the fox?

Rebel you're absolutely right about short haired dogs needing coats too. I've seen a few short haired dogs out walking while their humans are in full clothing. I have to hold myself back from running over and telling them to please put a coat on their dog too.

  • Holy Bi-Cuspid Batman!

Yikes, I'm not too sure I like seeing what's left of Mr. Foxes chompers!

Better hunker down and be on the look out...

Who knows what may wander around the farm when no one is looking!

    Be careful girly girls!

  • Hi everybody..i am going to take a couple days off..little problem with my walking this afternoon..I have to be carried outside, as I am a little unstable...but don't worry fellow doggers I will bounce back..talk to all of you this Friday...when you go outside, do some barking for me..okay?..and yes, I put my stupid homemade vest on before James carries me out..I feel so foolish!..later dog pals, Cora-belle

  • Good EVENING F & S

Yes it's evening and I'm just getting computer time - my life sucks right now!!!

Yo girlfriends be careful out there with those foxes you never know who you are going to meet up with in those woods. That jaw bone you found looked pretty interesting, how did it taste?

So the weekend went by in a blink - no mom to be found. She made an appearance for a few hours Sunday afternoon and that was it :( This move and new company is really pissing me off. I hope she realizes I'll need some pretty good presents to make up for lost mama time.

I don't know how you do it F & S with Martha working and traveling so much. I miss my mom SO MUCH!!! I snuggle in at night and give her lots of kisses.

Well that's it for me today - wow big 10 minutes of computer time. I didn't even get to check my emails!!

    Zoe

  • I'm a little perplexed. I thought this blog post would have Sharkey and Francesca on the trail of a fox only to find out that they were following a drag scent. Does the hunt where Martha lives actually do a live hunt or is it just a drag?

My guess is the jaw they found is from a pet's grave from past inhabitants of the farm.

Just my guesses....I'd like to know what Sharkey and Francesca think of Quigley the French bulldog in the Skechers ad for the Super Bowl. A family member perhaps?
http://hoofcare.blogspot.com/2012/01/hoofcare-at-super-bowl-have-commercials.html is a post I wrote about the dogs in the Super Bowl commercials!
