A Cause For Worry at the Farm

Posted by F&S

Here in the Northeast, it’s been unseasonably warm and nature has been reacting to these elevated temperatures. We, Frenchies, have noticed that the squirrels at the farm are especially rambunctious, chasing around and around. You can bet that's been keeping us busy! But, what concerns us is the growth spurt of many spring-flowering plants. Are they really going to bloom in January?

Sharkey! There you are! I was looking for you. What are you doing?

Oh Francesca, I found some flowers growing and it has me a bit concerned.

You mean like this one? Why, this is just a common snowdrop flower. There's nothing to be concerned about here!

The snowdrop, or Galanthus, often flowers in winter. These plants have a substance in them called galantamine which is often used in the treatment for Alzheimer's.

It wasn't the type of flower, that concerned me, Franny. It was the fact that it, and many other bulbs, are beginning to sprout!

Look at what's growing in the daffodil beds! These should be appearing in April, not January! The weather has been varying from warm to cold. I'm worried that the next frost will kill all of these flowers!

It's not just the bulbs that are confused. Take a look at the swollen buds of these climbing hydrangeas! Hey buds, go back to sleep! You're not supposed to pop open for another couple of months!

You're right, Sharkey. There are a lot of plants poking through the soil much too early. I know how much you love flowers, so I can understand your concern, but there's no need to worry!

Indeed, the weather has been reaching upwards of 60 degrees, so no wonder these bulbs think it's time to spring up! Fortunately, a frost will not kill the plants as bulbs are meant to be hardy.

You're right, Francesca. The bulbs are just reacting to the environment. When the temperature drops, it will stifle their growing until it is warm again. I just want these beautiful flowers bloom in the spring when they're supposed to!

  • Hello Ladies,
Warm weather too early can certainly be of concern. You girls are right to keep an eye on things. What always happens in Colorado is when we least expect it, a big snow... like Easter or Mother's Day. So watch out, and I will keep my paws crossed that the flowers don't get frosted.

This is our big game weekend for the AFC playoffs and the Broncos will be on televison Saturday night against New England. I am predicting New England will fall.hehehehehe!!! I know it.

Say Dudley, you never told me where you live. Are you close to me in Colorado? It seems our weather is similar. I try and always remember where everyone is from, but sometimes I get confused.

I'll be in my orange t-shirt tomorrow night. GO BRONCOS!!!!!!

    LOVE & LICKS,
    Basil

  • Hi frenchies..there are snowdrops coming up in my yard, too..I live in southwest Washington..but we are expecting snow this week-end..not too keen on snow..this old dog has a hard time in snow..and the ground is frozen tonight, so I slip around a bit..I'm turning into a real weenie these days..just took my medicine and i am off to bed, Lucinda turned on the electric blanket on my side... she takes good care of me...have a good week-end all my dog buddies..later, Cora-Belle p.s. when we went outside I counted fourteen pair of coon eyes looking at me from high in the old maple tree on the bank of the river in our front yard..think I heard one laugh at my homemade vest...bad tree rats!

  • Good Morning F & S

We have green sprouts popping up in our garden too! I sure wish it was mid March and Spring was just around the corner.

Mom has been so busy with meetings this past week my computer time has been very limited. She is rebranding her company name and has been working like crazy. I did hear her tell Dad last night that she is taking the weekend off that put a smile on my face.

So I know your mom is a Giants fan and will be cheering her team on this weekend do you both have Giants shirts? I can't wait till baseball then I can start wearing my Phillies shirt again, we just love baseball :)

    Everyone enjoy your weekend!

    Zoe

  • Good morning girls,
I am glad your flowers will be alright. It was enough with all the damage to the trees this past year. Martha doesn't need her flowers to be ruined also. I don't know why, but yesterday Dr. Pia's blog did not come up on the computer here, I checked several times. Now I see it is up so I will have to go back and read it.
Another weekend, where does the time go? I hope no one gets snowed in this weekend. That town in Alaska that got over 18 feet of snow, that is not good. I hope everyone will be safe.
I think I will go back to bed. I don't have friggatriskaidekaphobia (the fear of Friday the 13th) but I am not taking any chances.
I will check back with everyone after midnight when it is the 14th, not that I am superstituous or anything, but why take chances. hehehehehehehe
    Love to all,
    Maddox

  • Good Morning F&S and GK,

I just love the flowers popping up in the yard. I am able to get right in there with my teeth and pull them out of the ground roots and all. LOL. Mom is always yelling at me when I am running around with roots hanging out my mouth. She said she has no idea what her garden is going to look like come spring. HAHA I did hear something about having to fence in her vegtable garden too :)
She wasn't too happy with me last night. I didn't want to come in for bed. It rained all day so I wanted to have some play time outside when it finally stopped. But I guess 11:00pm is too late for play time since mom gets up at 5am. But me, I'm good cause I get to go back to sleep after I do my "business" at 5.
Anyway, I hope you all have a great weekend. And I think the cold will be back. :)

  • The warm none snow weather is gone! that changed yesterday having snow fall all day, but not the big flakes just the tiny wet stuff with high winds...no sooner done clearing, the wind covered it all up again. :-(

Kitty refuses to go outside, I opened the door and she saw the snow and ran back into the house. I placed her outside to go potty...immediately climbing up the wooden support posts of the deck refusing to walk in the cold snow...sooner or later she has to go potty outside or use the box...or she'll blow up :-o

We still have the big buck walking our yard, very odd he comes here daily.

For all those that watch their favorite Football Team...Good Luck to all...especially games without injuries. :-)

    delia & Kitty =(^..^)=

  • Hey ladies,
I think we are sending cold weather your way with a bit of snow! I'm staying home today.. it's toooo cooold for me. I'll hunker down in my basket. Maybe Mimi will start a log buring today, hope so. Mimi had a great time shoveling this morning. The snow was light & easy to push. I stayed out long enought to do my business & high-tailed it to the front door!
Hey Chloe - you are a stinker! Roots hanging from your mouth - too funny! Go Broncos!
    Your pal,
    Rebel

  • Hello ladies, Kirby here.
Well another week shot all. . . . Ok Daddy I’ll stop. I wouldn’t want to get into trouble on Friday the 13th. It’s been warm here too in Georgia. It’s been 12 to 15 degrees warmer than it usually is. It was cooling down a little last night and tonight it will be below freezing. Some of the plants in the front yard are starting to bud out already; tonight should stop that. Some trees, such as peach, need a time of cold weather or they will not produce good fruit. So far we haven’t had nearly that many days. Have a good weekend all.
    Catch you later, Kirby.

  • Hi Girl Friends &G.K., You girls look so cute in your nice, warm jackets out there checking the flower bulbs that are showing up way too soon!! You sure gave us some great information about how safe the bulbs will be even in the freezing weather-thanks! How fascinating to learn about the snowdrop plants having treatment for alzheimer's-Mom was amazed at that! Hey Bazil, I live over here south of Seattle in a small town called Des Moines very close to Puget Sound. Cora-Belle, we are supposed to get some snow maybe Sat. or Sun. and next week. It's pretty cold right now already. Hey Zoe, I love bseball, too! We have our Mariners and Mom loves the Yankees! Hey Chloe, digging up those bulbs isn't a good idea, but I guess you will learn as you get older! Hey Deila, I understand why Kitty doesn't want to go out in the snow because I grew up with a kitty outside and she didn't like the snow either! When I got rescued by Mom, everything turned out much nicer! Hope you all are safe on this Friday the 13th! Have a great weekend! Love Dudley Do Right XOXOXO+

  • Well if any bulbs had thoughts of blooming early, that got squashed yesterday with the snow and now really cold air. Bah! As always, you two are on top of farm activities and making sure everything is going well.

Football Divisional Weekend: Packers vs. Giants; Broncos vs. Patriots; Ravens vs. Texans; and the 49er's vs. Saints. This is going to be fun, everyone have a great weekend!

  • Good Morning F & S and of course cuttie pie GK
No blog today?? So if figured I would post here. I am getting into a lot of trouble this morning so I have to stay outside. Mom is at work and Abbie is home here with Jenna(she is Abbie's brohter's girlfriend) I don't know what it is but I just seem to always get the urge to jump up on her and take little nibbles at her hand. Mom is always yelling at me but she is not here so I am doing as I please LOL. I am also a little nervous about my training classes tomorrow night. I just want to make mom proud :)
Had a nice weekend. Nice cold temps for me to enjoy. Everytime mom filled my water bowl outside it froze so I had chuncks of ice to play with. Well, off to see where Jenna is at, getting that feeling again...... haha

  • yikes..it is snowing non-stop here in the Northwest (s.w. Washington) and i do not like it one bit..too deep for this old girl to get around in anymore..yes, Lucinda and James shoveled an area for me..but i don't like that area..so I am worn out from trudging around in the snow...even the critters were smart enough to stay in their houses..didn't see one track...I must curl up on the couch in front of the pellet stove..hope all you my dog buddies are warm and dry..over and out..Cora-belle
