Rooting Around in the Vegetable Garden

Posted by F&S

We, Frenchies, went to the vegetable garden to see if there was anything left to pick.  We’ve had some pretty heavy frosts at the farm, so we weren’t exactly holding out breath.  After rooting around a bit, we realized that someone had already beaten us to it!

Sharkey! Where are you? You told me to meet you in the vegetable garden to get some things for dinner, but why? It doesn't seem like there's much left to harvest at this time of year.

Over here, Franny! I've found some things, like this row of celeriac. Ryan has trimmed off the frost damaged stems and now the roots are ready to dig out.

Celeriac is a type of celery that grows a large and bulbous root, like a turnip! It's a great source of Vitamin C and Potassium, and is often used in soups and purées.

Sharkey, I'm surprised to see this much lettuce still growing in the garden! You'd think the frost would have zapped it by now. It's probably too bitter for eating, but Ryan picks some every day for the chickens.

This type is called Winter Density, because obviously, it holds up well against frost. It's a bibb-romaine that's great in salads. Aren't the heads beautiful?

These are artichokes, but they're not producing any longer. Chef Pierre really knows how to prepare artichokes. I've watched him many times in the kitchen.

Come to think of it, Franny, I remember seeing a row of orange buckets outside the flower room. Let's go see what's in them.

You're right! Here are more celeriac bulbs. Maybe after they're washed, we could make a celeriac purée.

And maybe we can roast these parsnips. Roasting will really bring out their sweetness.

Parsnips are the pale, sweeter cousin of carrots! Hey, maybe we can put all of these root vegetables together and make a nice soup!

Great idea, Franny! A hot soup for the cold days ahead! Help me get these veggies inside for washing!

  • Good Morning Girls

Holy cow what's with all the root veggies? Hot soup sounds good to me send some down to South Jersey :)

My medication must be working I didn't need to scratch my eyes on the carpet yesterday. They are still a little puffy but mom said she can see a difference already.

I'm so excited tomorrow we bake cookies and I'm always available to taste test. Good thing we have a big kitchen because all 4 dogs hang out with mom she keeps saying one of these days she is going to break her neck falling over one of us I sure hope that never happens :(

Well have a great weekend everyone. I'm sure the humans will all be going crazy finishing up their shopping and baking up a storm - why - BECAUSE SANTA COMES IN 9 DAYS !!!!!

  • Good morning girls,
Next thing you know, you will be in the kitchen with little chef hats on, cooking up the veggies for a delicious soup.
I am glad that your eyes are better today Zoe. I know we don't like going to the vet but when you think of it, they really help us out and do their best to get us healthy again if we are sick. Speaking of that, Cora-Belle, if you are supposed to wear a sweater, wear one. You can have James or Lucinda sew little bones and leather and stuff like that on it to make it your style of a "critter chasing" sweater. You would look really good. Give it a try. Sometimes we have to do things we don't like but just try to make the best of it. My cousin Cyrus, who was burned badly had to wear special boots on all his feet for a long time. He didn't like getting them on but he knew it was to heal the burns.
Well Glue Squad, it is the end of another week. So, until Monday, enjoy yourselves and try to stay out of trouble beings it is so close to Christmas.
    Love ya all,
    Maddox,

  • Oooh, my Mimi would love those root vegetables! There is a lot of soup cooking at our house in the winter. Papa loves the soups & Mimi says they help to keep everyone warm & healthy.
I see your Mama is so far away, hope she gets home for Christmas!
Hey Zoe, so glad your eyes are feeling a bit better. You should be ready for those Christmas pictures.
    Have a great day everybody!

  • Hello ladies, Kirby here.
I’m not much of a vegetable fan myself, but soup sound good to me. Cooking and baking helps to warm the kitchen up on some of these cool mornings. It’s bee warm here again but they say things will change today. I like the cool weather but don’t like the rain that comes with it. Oh well, into each life a little rain must fall. Glad you are better Zoe. It’s the weekend again so everyone have a good time. Be careful and I’ll see you on Monday.
    Catch you later, Kirby.

  • Hello Ladies,
Those root veggies look mighty yummie.I heard on Mama Martha's show that she is having a party this weekend for 200 people. You better rest now,so you will be in your party form for this weekend. Soup does sound very good now. Mom is in her mass panic mode for this big, big show this weekend. Thousands of people come to it--mainly men, but right before Christmas there is an area for artisans, and thank goodness she always tries to have stock on hand, but her jewelry was about out, so there has been a working frenzy. Oh, and one of my Mom's special friends, Julie, brought me my very own gift for Christmas yesterday. It is very hard for me to get gifts now that I have the Crohn's disease and am on the special diet. Julie is around me lots and knows my issues. Let's be honest, my nickname is the stinkbomb. Now Frenchies normally have a farting problem, but I am now the king in this category, and guess what Julie got me for Christmas---my very own aromatherapy candle made special for dogs. It is called Sniff, fart and away candles. Not only will it take my stinky butt smell away, but through the natural oils it is supposed to help my tummy. I started stinking up the joint immediately after my first meds this morning and the candle is going and it is deluxe. This was a great surprise and now I am even more excited for Santa. Did I ever tell you I saw him one year, when I was just a pup? Yes, and he is something!!! Be good all, Zoe keep getting better and everyone have a great weekend.
    Love & licks,
    Basil

  • Thanks for the great lesson on Veggies my dear F & S, so nice to be learning here all the time. Great salvage of veggie!

I hate wasting, so made a delicious "refrigerator Dump soup" yesterday...I added whatever veggies were left in the frig and freezer, then added slices of Hebrew National Beef hotdogs (hubbie and Kitty love them, but sometimes add other types of meats or fowl) Because I get food poisoning often, I clear the frig of food before it gets bad and make soup, something my mom taught me when we had little food to eat. Having had malnutrition as a child during the war I suffer from bone loss...ahhh it's wonderful getting old! :-(

Kitty loves soups with veggies, maybe because she was starving when I found her and she ate anything I put outside. :-)

Have a Blessed weekend everyone...stay Healthy and Happy!

  • Hi Girl Friends &G.K., I love seeing you girls out in Martha's garden looking for edible vegetables! How fun it would be to be there with you because I love to dig around and smell everything and I love most veggies! Mom gives me delicious veggies in my food everyday and I love it! Did you make some delicious vegetable soup? Sure would love to taste it! Being such a happy fellow, I love reading all of your terrific comments everyday! You all share such great things-thank you for making me happy everyday! Zoe, you sound like you are doing better today-yea! Maddox, you sure have great ideas for helping others-superb! Hey Rebel, Martha is back home already and has a big party this weekend! Hey Kirby, I don't like rain either, but we get a lot here in PNW! Basil, you sure are doing better and that makes me happy! • Roots, roots, and more roots ladies. It's so cute seeing the two out in the garden digging around. The three of you need to be nice to MommyM at night when she's walking you. I was watching a clip online about pet gifts and she mentioned how she loved the blinking lights collar because she often loses both of you & G.K.

Zoe, I'm so glad that your eyes are feeling better. Try to get some rest this weekend but with your Mom baking that might be hard. Basil, anytime you make a stinkie you can just blame it on Guido. Rest up Cora-Belle, there will always be critters to chase later. Everyone have a marvelous weekend!
