Inspecting the Bald Cypress Trees

Posted by Francesca

Yesterday was not a nice day at the farm, as it was rainy and chilly.  We, Frenchies, needed to go outside and I had to find our warm rain jackets.  While we were outdoors, Sharkey and I became concerned about a grove of trees and made an inspection.

Hi Vivaldi! I know our basket of Frenchie clothes makes the perfect cozy nook for catnapping, but would you mind if I grab our raincoats? It's wet outside and Sharkey and I have got to go, if you know what I mean!

Thanks for being brave around Vivaldi and for getting our rain jackets, Francesca! We need them on a drizzly, autumn day, such as this one!

We certainly do! Hey Sharkey, I think we should investigate that grove of trees over there. It looks like those conifers are losing their needles! Could they possibly be sick?

I'm right behind you, Franny! We simply can't lose any more trees on the farm!

Look, Sharkey! The ground is covered in bronze feathery foliage from these trees! I'm confused - aren't all conifers evergreens? Evergreens are supposed to retain their needles and color all year round.

You're partially right, Franny. While most conifers are evergreens, there are a few species which are deciduous, meaning they shed their foliage in the autumn.

Ah, yes! It's coming back to me now. Upon closer inspection, I remember this tree from previous autumns. This is the Taxodium distichum!

It is a deciduous conifer, most commonly called the Bald Cypress. A pretty apt name, don't you think?

It isn't quite a member of the Cypress family, which includes both trees and shrubs, as they are all actual evergreens.

Franny, why is there fencing around the base of the trunks? Is that some sort of winterizing for the Bald Cypress?

You must remember a little problem I have with chewing bark? I actually think I can gnaw a tree, cause it to fall, and get the squirrel hiding in it. I'm afraid this fencing is more of a Francesca-proofing than winter-proofing!

  • Hello Ladies,
Mama Martha must be very proud of you girls and how educated you both are on "EVERYTHING", especially today's tree. Why you both must have gotten an A+ in Botany. I learned about this tree from you today---never knew the info before. Forgot to tell you yesterday how much Mom and I loved, loved, loved you both on the show yesterday. We were disappointed it wasn't Holiday decorations yet however. You girls are on the ball, but someone is taking a nap. Have a great Wednesday all.
    Love & licks,
    Basil

  • Hello girls,
I am so glad for Martha that the trees are healthy. As you said, she lost enough trees on the farm. So,
Francesca, just how many trees have fencing around them to protect them from Franny, the squirrel hunter?
    Take care,
    Maddox

  • Hello ladies, Kirby here.
November is almost over and I know what comes next; winter. I know that some of my northern friends don’t like that, but there is nothing that can be done so enjoy yourself while you can. I have seen plenty of those fenced in trees and didn’t know why. Now I know it’s to keep Francesca from chewing on them. That girl sure does get around. I have asked some of my beaver friends to help me out when a squirrel climbs up a tree but they tell me that by the time they chew through the tree the squirrel will be long gone, so that won’t work Francesca; give that thought up.
    Catch you later, Kirby.

  • Oh my goodness the Frenchie's knowledge book...it amazes me all the stuff you know! I think Vivaldi was warming up your coats! Kitty always finds the clean laundry to sleep on, guess it's a Gato thing.

  • Hi Girl Friends &G.K., I don't know what's wrong with Mom's computer, but it took a long time for your great photos to appear today-same thing happened when Mom was checking out Martha's blog, also. Thank you so much for these delightful photos and the terrific information about those bald cypress trees! Seeing Vivaldi sure was fun-glad he let you get your raincoats to go outside! I don't remember seeing bald cypress trees loosing their needles so this is very interesting and you girls are great teachers for all of us to learn new things everyday-terrific! We are having rather cold, light showery days right now after close to 10 inches of rain last week and it's very cloudy today. They say we will get sunshine, but we just have to wait. Sure hope everyone has a delightful day today! Love, Dudley Do Right XOXOXO+

  • Franny that was so sweet of you to politely ask Vivaldi to move so that the two of you could get your pretty coats. Why, you'd think that the two of you were the closest of buddies.

MommyM is very lucky that she has the two of you to inspect the farm and monitor the health of the trees. Francesca-proofing the trees?

  • ..yes, sometimes chewing on the base of a tree is the only way to unnerve a tree-rat...good going frenchies...I went to the beach today..we drove on the beach and drank mochas and ate maple bars..a good time...except I had to drink water..did get out and race up and put my paw in the ocean..brrr...my buddy Kit-Bang the cat has been sick all day..must help Lucinda give her some medicine to calm her down...over and out..Cora-Belle
