Helping in the new Greenhouse

Posted by Sharkey

At long last, the new greenhouse for storing all of the tropical plants during the cold months has been completed.  It was a lot of work building it and even more work moving all of the plants into it.  Ryan and Wilmer have it nicely organized and they can now focus on caring for the plants and dividing and repotting, where needed.  Of course, I lent a paw.

Hi, Ryan! How're you doing, Wilmer? I can help you divide and re-pot these giant Alocasias. Alocasia is a tropical plant, and it will love being out of the cold and in the new heated greenhouse.

I'll just grab this scoop and get started.

I'll fill the pots with some of the Metro-Mix Professional growing soil. Alocasias prefer very moist soil, so we'll have to make sure to water them regularly while they are forming new roots.

I'll use this garden knife to make an appropriate sized hole in the soil. Actually, Wilmer, maybe you should help me with that. Supervision is always good with sharp tools, for little creatures, like myself!

Job well done! This pot is prepped and ready to plop in a divided alocasia.

If you divide a stem in two, you can plant each section separately. This is one way to propagate alocasia.

Many alocasia are hybrids, grown as small house plants. Those hybrids tend to be sterile, so they cannot produce on their own.

There, that looks great! I can see why this plant is nicknamed the Elephant's Ear. Look at how large and floppy these leaves are!

Guys, I think I'm done for the day. It's so toasty and warm in the new greenhouse that it's making me sleepy! Time to find Franny and cuddle up for a nap!

  • Hello Ladies,
Sharkey, it looks like you are the lone worker today. Is everyone pooped from Thanksgiving? You look a bit tired yourself. I think some snow and a long winter's nap is in order. Thanksgiving was great and now we are in full swing for Christmas. Mom and I love Christmas. I have supervised she and Dad putting up 2 of the 3 trees. Today we will put up Dad's fisherman tree outside the bedroom, and it is 10 feet tall. We have a family tree in the front room and there is a silver aluminum tree covered in snowmen in our t.v. room. Snow this week too---it is beginning to look a lot like Christmas. Zoe, I wish you could get your Dad to post while Mom is on her trip. I am glad Kirby is back. Any news on G.K. Maddox? I will be extra good for I am writing my letter to Santa this week. I want another nice soft bed for in Mom's new work room. Have a great Monday all, and rest Sharkey.
    Love & licks,
    Basil

  • Good Morning F & S

That dirt sure looks yummy. Mom uses some organic soil in her pots and we all eat the dirt :) She has a fit and has tried everything to keep us out but we all love the taste.

What a busy weekend, between Thanksgiving and decorating the house for Christmas I'm exhausted. I put my special touch on a few things already. Mom has an antique baby sled she puts under the tree each year so I thought I'd change the looks of the rope used to pull the sled - it's now much shorter ;) I also removed a few of the decorations on the lower limbs they were hitting my head when I lay under the tree. I'm sure I'll find a few more things to change before Christmas gets here. We picked out our live tree and that will stay outside in a bucket of water until mom comes home.

Mom leaves tomorrow so I won't be on the computer much Dad won't type for me. She'll be gone 12 days and I'll be very sad :(

Well I'm going to go write my letter to Santa so mom can mail it before she leaves.

    Zoe

  • Hello ladies, Kirby here.
As you know I really like the cold weather and working in a greenhouse would put me to sleep shortly. I kind of envy Basil and all the snow around his house. I like the cold weather so much and miss it. Oh well into each life a little rain must fall; so they say. With me I hope it’s snow, hehehe. I saw a “Dog Show” on the TV this weekend but no GK. I guess he is too busy with other shows to have made this one. Ok, so I’m no show dog but I still get lots of love and treats. Rain today which means I stay inside for today and tomorrow until the ground dries up. Wouldn’t want to get my feet wet.
    Catch you later, Kirby.

  • Good morning,
That looks like it was a big job, moving all those plants. They look very heavy. It was nice of Ryan and Wilmer to help you.
I hope everyone had a good Thanksgiving and that you got to spend it with family and friends. Yes, Basil, there is news regarding GK but I will let him tell you about it.
Speaking of Christmas trees, Karen has a sock monkey tree. There are all kinds of sock monekys on it. There is a cheer leader, a maid, a cowboy, a scuba diver, a sock monkey angel, etc. She has sock monkey bedroom slippers. Now she is looking for a sock monkey cap. I don't get it but if it makes her happy.......
    Love always,
    Maddox

  • Hello everyone,
Sharkey, you better not go in that greenhouse too often. You look very tired.
12 days without Zoe? That will be tough. Zoe, just text your mom when she is away and have her go on a computer where she is and she could post your message for you. Is your dad prepared for 12 days of taking care of you? I hope the antique baby sled will still be there when your mom gets home, or at least parts of it. I wish I could see your letter to Santa, especially the part where you say, "I have been a good girl" hahahahaha I am only teasing with you Zoe, I think you are awesome. Maybe Santa will give you a whole bunch of Barbie Heads for Christmas. Wouldn't that be neat?
I can't wait to see what all of you want for Christmas.
    Take care,
    Karen

  • Wow, Sharkey!
That was a lot of work. Not so much at our house for me to do yet. Mimi & Papa bought a new table for the addition & Mimi told me she was going to get a Christmas tree for out there.
I do a lot of supervising decorating the tree and helping in the kitchen. I thing I'm still worn out from Thanksgiving! No snow here yet but it is quite chilly outside.
    Will miss you Zoe!
    your pal....Rebel

  • Hi Girl Friends &G.K., Ms Sharkey, you are a terrific helper working in the new greenhouse with Ryan and Wilmer and I love reading the great information you share with us about the alocasias! That work you did was great and it's easy to see how tired you were after all that work! Where was Franny? Is G.K. back home from the latest Dog Show yet? Love seeing all three of you again whenever possible! Hey Zoe, we are going to miss you for 12 days! I love hearing from all of you great friends everyday! Sure hope everyone has a great, happy, safe day! Love, Dudley Do Right XOXOXO+

  • Looks like nap time for Sharkey! it's always nice when you can give a paw to such a great project..
Kitty finally came in the house without fear of all the dogs here for three T-Days...we gave her Turkey and pork loin to get her to come home everyday...now she is sleeping peacefully in her spot...we are all happy!

Zoe enjoy your time away! ;)

    delia & Kitty =^!^= meeuuu :)

  • Good job on helping out there Sharkey, you did a wonderful job as always. Don't you look cute in your pink 'Dog' sweater. Sounds like everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving and is now getting into the swing of Christmas. I still like to wait until the first of December before starting the Christmas season.

Zoe what will we do without you for 12 days? Maybe your Mom will help you send out a greeting before she leaves and maybe you can sweet talk your Dad into posting once or twice while she's gone.

  • GK,

You look beautiful w/ Jan. You have it all under control and have what it takes. You are a true champion. It was so nice of your daddy to give you his favorite toy. You remind me so much of him. Keep up the good work and have fun!!

    Dawn

  • Hey handsome,

All those ribbons are pretty impressive. I have a lot of ribbons also. Everytime I win daddy gets me a toy. Doesn't get better than that.

    Your girl,
    Jerz
