Coaching the Donkeys About the Cold

Posted by F&S

The weather has been so crazy lately and it seems like you just don’t know what will happen from one day to the next.    First we had a freak snowstorm that ruined so many trees.  Then it got really warm and melted all the snow.  Today, the temperatures were frigid again and the wind was howling.  We went to check on our friends the donkeys because it’s no fun being cold!

Rufus, Clive, and Billy! Franny and I came down from the house to check on you. The temperature is dropping and it's supposed to be very windy tonight!

That's right, Sharkey! The recent snowstorm broke a lot of branches off and many are still hanging in the trees. A few strong gusts of wind and those branches could come crashing down on our heads!

There are no tall trees around your paddock, but I'm especially worried about you three staying warm! Miniature donkeys, like yourselves, do not grow thick winter coats as horses do.

Rufus, maybe you donks should invest in some warm weather apparel like Sharkey and I have! Our fleece sweaters certainly help fight the brisk fall breezes!

Oh girls, you two are so sweet to be concerned about Rufus, Billy, and me!

The horses do grow thick coats that repel ice and snow because of natural oils. Our coats, as with most miniature breeds, aren't going to get any thicker than they are, so we'll need more protection from the elements.

And that's why we have this house! It shelters us from snow and harsh winds and we can huddle together for warmth.

This layer of straw that Dolma puts down is used not only for bedding but also to insulate the icy ground.

Rufus, you should also be eating a little extra now. Franny and I know from talking to the horses that putting on more body fat keeps equines warmer in the cold!

Don't mind if we do! Clive, Billy and I have been chomping on the grass before it's hidden by the snow again. We're so lucky to have you girls to care for us like this!

  • what good frenchies you are..checking on your buddies the donks..they look great...My pals, the chiweenies came to visit..what goof-balls, they are city doggies and nervous about the outdoors..so I didn't take them on a tour of the farm/ranch, a raccoon would have made short work of them..but we had treats and lounged around the house.I must catch up on my rest..chiweenies wear me out! later dog buddies, cora-belle

  • Good morning ladies,
Such thoughtful frenchies you are. I don't know what the other animals on the farm would do without you. You are always so concerned about all of them. I was going to talk to GK about the shows that he went to this past weekend but he already went back to bed. He must be worn out too, like Cora-Bell. Maybe it is going around, like the flu. The worn out virus. I hope I don't get it. hehehehehe
Well, the air is nice and chilly this morning, great for dogs like me and Kirby Bear. So, I guess I will go lay on the deck and take in all the morning crispness and wait for GK to wake up again to tell me how the shows went.
    Take care,
    Maddox

  • Good Morning F & S

I agree this weather is crazy!! I've been hanging out on the heat vents in the morning until the sun warms up the deck then I'll go catch some rays :)

I had lots of mom time over the weekend which made me very happy and Friday night my buddies Nicole and Abbie came over to play with me - just a wonderful weekend :)

Today dad has to finish putting away all the pool equipment so I'll be busy helping him. I won't mind it's suppose to be sunny and warm the next few days.

  • Hello ladies, Kirby here.
Well it’s the start of another week. I saw Mommy and Daddy packing up some things this weekend; road trip in store for me. We’ll be away for about two weeks. They have some snow in the mountains and it is calling to me; I must go. It’s been cooler the past few weeks and I have be out in it. I want my winter fur to come in so I won’t be cold in those mountains. You two stay warm and keep a sharp eye out for the other farm animals so that they don’t get chilly.
    Catch you later, Kirby.

  • Hi everybody!
I have missed seeing Clive, Rufus & Billy. You gals are such good friends to them. I have my sweater on today, it is chilly & rainy here in Illinois.
Hey, Maddox, we'll all be waiting to hear about G.K.'s first show.
    Have a good day..........Rebel

  • Hey Donks, I love your lean-to-shed...very fancy!

I saw a baby Mini Donk in the local paper ad section, needing a home...wish I had the space. :(

    got to run.............

  • Hi Girl Friends &G.K., You two are the best girl friends that I have ever had and I'm sending you many hugs and kisses and I thank you from the bottom of my heart for all of the wonderful things that you do and share with all of us!! Clive, Rufus, amd Billy sure were happy to see you and they appreciate you more and more as time goes by especially when it gets colder! I love your sweaters, you both look beautiful! Cora-Belle, you are so nice to your friends-I would love to meet you, also! Maddox, can't wait to hear about G.K.'s Dog Show! Zoe, I love it when it gets nice and warm outside, also! This week we may get rain off and on but it shouldn't be too cold, I hope! Kirby, sure hope you have a great two week road trip and hope you stay warm in the mountains! Rebel, sure hope you stay warm and dry with the rain like we have here near Puget Sound! Juanita Schulze, what a thoughtful person you are to adopt those sweet doggies to fill your emptyness! My Mom does that, too! Hope everyone has a great day! Love, Dudley Do Right XOXOXO+

  • Hello Ladies,
I am a bit late today. Getting into this retirement routine with Dad around is a challenge. He is soooo busy doing this and that---all the things he has wanted to do for some time. Mom had knitting classes on Saturday and Sunday, so it was a lot of guy bonding time over the weekend. I am very glad the donks have you very, very, intelligent Frenchie girls looking after them. We are supposed to get some snow today. One day raking and the next shoveling. I am back to my morning rest. I am a bit more tired than usual as well. In a day or two I will be fine after a lot of napping. Have a great Monday all.
    Love & licks,
    Basil

  • What a timely posting F&S!

The snow storm, the power outages and now I have drain issues I needed something to brighten my day!

And lo and behold the donks magically appeared.

I think I will follow suit with the Donks and 'beef' up for Winter time, for I don't want to get too cold!

    Love ya

    gail :)

  • As always Franny and Sharkey, you two are so kind to check in on Rufus, Clive, & Billie. Even though you (that means you Sharkey  ) love to tease them, you always make sure they and everyone else on the farm is well taken care of.

Cora-Bell you lead such an interesting life as a cattle dog. It must be a lot of hard work to maintain everything. Awww Maddox, how great that you are getting some father-son bonding time with G.K. Can't wait to hear how he did. Have a great day everyone!
