Canines, Collaboration and Calendars...

Posted by Pia

Why a calendar makes a great gift is basically a no-brainer- it's both useful and you can invariably find one to fit the specific interests of it's intended recipient. That much you already know... That said, I have NEVER been so excited about receiving or gifting a calendar as I am about the one i'm holding right now!

Whether or not you know, live with, or love, a pittie pooch is almost irrelevant- The Unexpected Pit Bull Calendar (UPBC) fits the bill for a broad spectrum of giftees on your list. I can practically real off a list of perfect UPBC recipients in my sleep...

Anyone who has: ...known or loved an animal companion, adopted a furry family member, felt misunderstood themselves, taken up for the underdog, been a victim of prejudice, needed an advocate at some point, been a loyal friend, brought joy to others, appreciated great photography, needed a second chance, helped educate and change misperceptions, taken a risk, set out to make a difference, advocated for fairness, given voice to the voiceless, had a loyal companion... (the list goes one and on) ... would appreciate this gift!

The UPBC is a labor of love and it shows! A collaboration between advocates and artists since 2004 -and with qualities like the dogs it serves to support - this loyal calendar educates, empowers and supports widening the circle of compassion! And all of this comes with amazing photographs, compelling stories and enough space to write down appointments!

According to UPBC non-profit founder, Jyo Buyyala, "By illustrating stories of pit bull dogs sharing their lives with a variety of people and animals, we hope to inspire a better understanding and appreciation of these dogs and combat the negative stereotype held against them.
100% of our net profits to pit bull rescue, education, and advocacy organizations in need of support. In doing so, our aim is to:
• Keep pit bull dogs with the people who love them—and far away from the ones who don’t.
• Fund pit bull specific legal, rescue, advocacy, and education initiatives throughout North America.
• Create calendars that communicate the unexpected surprise, delight, and satisfaction that comes with loving pit-bull dog ownership."

Jyo adds, "2012 is a very exciting year for us since, for the first time, our calendar is collaborating with HeARTs Speak, an organization made up of an international community of artists working to improve the lives of animals in need. Their members have contributed the photographs that grace our calendar pages this year, creating an energy we are certain you will love."

According to HeARTs Speak founder, Lisa Prince-Fishler, "A compelling photograph can reach into the heart of a potential adopter, and bring an animal one step closer to a long life outside of a shelter. An artist can be a life-changer, and that is priceless."

HeARTs Speak's mission is to unite the individual efforts of animal advocates and harness the power of art into collective action for social change.

Amen!

In kinship,
Dr. Pia Salk

P.S. Be sure to stay up to date on other great gifts, info. and unexpected pittie tidbits.

  • Good morning Dr.Pia,
I am so happy about that calendar. As you may know, chows get a bad rap too. It is not fair. I hope the calendar is a huge success.
I like the statement on the last picture, "I come in peace"
    Later,

  • Hello ladies, Kirby here.
And hello to you too Dr. Pia. I have to agree with Maddox about Chows getting a bad rap too. In my travels I have found some campgrounds that will not let Chow Chows in. I don’t know why some feel that way; I’ve never hurt anyone. But let that doorbell ring and I’m at the door barking and growling. Daddy often laughs and says, “If ADT doesn’t stop you, Kirby will.” I protect what’s mine very well thank you. That’s my job around the house. Anyway, what does it take to be a calendar dog?
    Catch you later, Kirby.

  • What a great calender! Pit Bulls are so misunderstood. I love the photo of Theodore, Louie and Simon playing...what cuties.

The two Pit Bulls I painted for a wedding gift are the sweetest dogs...they are huge and look tough, but their eyes tell their hearts...

I got an "error 404" message when I clicked on the HeArt's links.

  • Hi Dr. Pia, I love all animals and can't live without sharing my home and heart with them! This is another terrific posting about letting all people realize that all dogs will be great companions when they are treated with love and understanding by humans who care and love them! Hopefully this beautiful calendar will help more and more people learn that pit bulls are great dogs! I agree with Maddox and Kirby that some people don't understand how great Chow Chows are, also-perhaps they could make a similar calendar explaining Chow Chows, also! All people need to understand animals and treat them with respect. Wolves also need to be protected and not killed. Thanks so much for sharing and have a great weekend Dr. Pia! Jan

  • ..dogs are only what people make them..we cattledogs are misunderstood, too.....like my fellow doggers big or small our goal is to protect our people when someone comes to the door or property...sometimes it is a bluff sometimes not..Michael Vic did nothing to promote our buddies the pit bulls image...and people have to realize you can't rush up to me and start petting me if I don't know you..you could get nipped..after all people do you stand for strangers to maul you? just my thoughts..later.. Cora-Belle
