Make Way For a New Hoop House!

Posted by F&S

As you know, Martha loves her plants, especially her potted tropical plants.  She keeps acquiring more and more, but at the same time, the plants in her collection are growing larger and larger.  Guess what?  We’re running out of winter storage space!  It’s been decided that a new and larger heated hoop house will be erected in the next few weeks to accommodate this expanding group of tropical specimens.  The new location is the wood and stone yard.

Sharkey, did you hear Shaun and Ryan talking about how a new and larger hoop house is going to be built in this spot? Apparently, they're running of space to store all of Martha's tropical plants during the winter.

This location has been known as the wood and stone yard. It's where all of the extra pieces of building projects are kept in case things need to be added onto or repaired.

So, Franny - do you think we should take an inventory before things get moved?

Wow! There sure are a lot of boards stacked up here. They've been covered with tarps, protecting them from the elements, but the tarps are kind of shredded. This move couldn't come too soon!

These wooden stakes are used all around the farm. They mark the edges of the carriage roads, which is especially important for the snow plow when snow starts falling.

And this pile is, of course, Martha's pile of antique Chinese granite posts. She bought a ton of them and they're used as uprights for all of the pergolas at the farm.

Franny, there are still so many of these granite posts left. I wonder what other structures Martha will have made using them?

Ah-ha! Here are all the blocks of marble. Martha said they came from a contemporary house she used to own in East Hampton designed by architect Gordon Bunshaft.

Franny! Don't you recognize this marble? Martha had it sawed into thinner pieces and used it for the kitchen floor. We love stretching out on that cool marble in the summertime.

Sharkey, there are still plenty of these edging stones, which get used for so many things around the farm.

  • Good Morning Girls

Wow your mom sure does have a lot of stone at the farm. It reminds me of our local garden center! I feel sorry for the guys who have to move all that stuff.

Well this morning the guys come to close our pool, it's a sad day here summer is officialy over :( No more water fountain, no more sparkling water BUT we get our playground back. I love to chase the Labs on the pool cover. It's one of those safety covers and we can run and get wet at the same time. Of course we get yelled at Dad has a fit but we sure have fun :)

It's a good thing I'm cute I can get away with being a little devil ;)

  • Good morning girls,
Wow, Martha sure does have a nice supply of building materials. I love the Chinese posts. I think I would look good standing on those posts cause I am Chinese too. How about it Kirby Bear?
Today I go back to the vet to get a recheck for my eye but it is good as new. ZOE, is there a day that goes by that you don't get in trouble? Now you run on the pool cover. It must be very interesting at your house. Whatever you do, do not chew your dad's birthday slippers.
I guess I will go lay outside while it is nice and cool this morning. Cora-Belle probably has half her chores done already. She is a busy busy girl.
    Until tomorrow,
    Maddox

  • Hello Ladies,
Now I can call you job superintendents since the two of you are overseeing the Hoop House construction. You will have to keep us updated as the construction progresses. Dad thinks this is his last week of working 60 hours. Good, just in time for Mom's craft show next week. She is driving me nuts with all her pricing worrying etc. etc etc. She hasn't even been able to watch any of the new Martha shows, but she has them taped for after the craft show. Then Dad's retirement party at work is the 27th and the 28th is his last day. I will get double the pampering when he retires. We are picking the last of the garden tonight. Frost is supposed to hit this weekend. Have a great day all.
    Love & licks,
    Basil

  • Holy guacamole my senoritas!
That's a whole lotta stone! It's smart to have a supply in case of an emergency. Good luck with the move. I wonder how many pairs of leather gloves the workers will wear out?
Zoe, you are one little stinker (who has a lot of fun). Mimi is making my bat wings today. I wonder what the squirrels will think about my new costume?
    Hasta manana,
    Rebel

  • Hello ladies, Kirby here.
I know from first hand how hard it is to get things ready for a building project. Mommy and Daddy had to repair the “french drain” in front of the house this spring. It took days just moving things before the work could begin. After the drain was repaired it took a rather long time just getting things back to normal. They installed a wall and new plants along the front walk. Now you all know how I can’t take the heat and it was too hot for me outside. I provided the moral support between my naps, hehehehehehe.
    Catch you later, Kirby.

  • Hi Girl Friends &G.K., You brilliant girls sure do know how to check out every part of Martha's wonderful, beautiful farm!! All of those fantastic building items that you are showing us, look like great materials for fixing so many great things there! I love seeing the wood, granite posts, marble blocks, edging stones, and slate shingles-wish we had some of each! What a great idea to protect the stable and chicken coops with the slate shingles and use the marble blocks in Martha's kitchen!! Can't wait to see the new hoop house that will be built to protect all of those tropical plants and the new place where these great materials will be kept! Sure hope you get G.K. out there to help! Sure hope everyone has another fun day and glad you are all doing well! Love, Dudley Do Right XOXOXO+

  • ..wow, Martha has some cool stone, Lucinda and James would love to have that....I got sick all over the kitchen floor this a.m., told Lucinda no big deal but she is wigging out..won't let me go out alone, no riding in the truck, just have to rest all day..geez, I had things to do today! talk to you all tomarrow..later, cora-belle

  • Ladies I love your newest job project of supervising the new Hoop House construction but I have an even better idea: open your own building supply center! You two and GK can run this on the side and make some extra cash for yourselves. All you have to do is set up a website with photos and people can order what they need. Just don't sell too much of one item otherwise MommyM might catch on.

  • What a Lucky lady your mommie martha is! All those beautiful Chines stone, that is so awesome...we can only dream watching you Frenchie girls take us through the property so we can enjoy it as well....Thank You for that pleasure!

Today another glorious weather day, almost 80 degrees and just a hint of a breeze...I stopped by the Rotary Garden to see the leaves changing and all the colors...a great day indeed! ;)
