G.K., Show Dog!
Posted by Ghenghis Khan
If you watched the Martha Stewart Show on Wednesday, I'm sure you saw Francesca and Sharkey. But where was I, G.K., you ask? I was busy preparing for my debut dog show at the end of this month! Karen Tracy, my breeder and owner of my father Maddox, along with Jan Kolnik, an experienced dog handler and breeder of shar peis, have showed numerous dogs at shows, including the Westminster Dog Show. They were as excited as I was to begin training!
This is Karen Tracy. She's very confident about my chances at the show, but let's see how I do during rehearsal!
We start by walking back and forth on grass. There are indoor and outdoor shows, so we need to practice on both types of ground.
Wait, I do what you want and you give me a treat? I can get used to this...
How's my prance? Does my tail look good as it bounces?
Jan, I know you keep putting your foot up to stop me from sitting, but I've been trained to sit! Show dogs are trained to stand, not sit, starting as a puppy. Since I am only just starting my career, I need to be retrained!
Fortunately, my breed is very intelligent and patient! I'm catching on in no time!
We work on walking back and forth on the carriage road as well. I will have to walk back and forth and also around a circle with the other dogs in my class.
The judging is based on weight, coloring, grooming, personality, and behavior.
The judges look at not only overall appearance, but also individual characteristics, like my teeth. A show dog must be very comfortable with smiling!
The judges will also check other parts of me, like my ears and tail!
Grooming? Why, I get groomed regularly, but if you think we should go a bit shorter on my hind legs for the show, then I can get a trim!
How am I doing, Karen? Will Dad be proud of me?
Come on, Jan! Level with me...do you think I have a shot?
