G.K., Show Dog!

Posted by Ghenghis Khan

If you watched the Martha Stewart Show on Wednesday, I'm sure you saw Francesca and Sharkey. But where was I, G.K., you ask? I was busy preparing for my debut dog show at the end of this month! Karen Tracy, my breeder and owner of my father Maddox, along with Jan Kolnik, an experienced dog handler and breeder of shar peis, have showed numerous dogs at shows, including the Westminster Dog Show. They were as excited as I was to begin training!

We start by walking back and forth on grass. There are indoor and outdoor shows, so we need to practice on both types of ground.

Jan, I know you keep putting your foot up to stop me from sitting, but I've been trained to sit! Show dogs are trained to stand, not sit, starting as a puppy. Since I am only just starting my career, I need to be retrained!

Grooming? Why, I get groomed regularly, but if you think we should go a bit shorter on my hind legs for the show, then I can get a trim!

  • Oh my GK a show dog? I must say you are a good looking boy but do you really want all that grooming, training not to mention travel? I think I would prefer to just be a loving pet and enjoy my human family.

F & S what is your take on all of this? Look out if GK becomes show material his head will double in size. I see he is showing off his nice teeth something us Frenchies don't have to worry about. The good thing with my teeth is that I never have to floss, nothing could ever get stuck in my mouth it looks like a picket fence. I guess that is the price I pay for being so cute ;)

My Mom is so happy it's Friday she said this was the week from hell. It must of been pretty tough at work because I only chewed up one magazine this week and Dad cleaned that up yesterday before she came home from work. I'd better be good this weekend she needs some rest.

    Have a great weekend everyone!!

    Zoe

  • Alright GK!!!
I knew mom and Jan were going to visit you earlier this week but I didn't want to say anything till you posted it yourself. I heard you did well, chip off the old block ya are. I am so proud of you, if I had buttons they would be popping off cause I am bursting with pride. What dad doesn't want his son to follow in his footsteps? Jan said you seemed to like everything she did with you and mom said you picked things up very quickly. I think you will have fun. I know I did. Ahhh, and you even put mom in your blog. That was nice. You are a good son. Jan was my handler, just let her guide you and you will be fine. She is good at what she does. By the way, you are also judged on your gait, the way you move, your bone structure, a whole bunch of stuff. But you are my son, naturally you have all the qualities that are needed. And Kathi Siedenspinner, who was your co-breeder, is happy for you too. You have a whole bunch of peeople who are looking forward to seeing you show cause mom and Jan told them how good you did, and cause they know you are my son and they liked watching me show. So keep practicing and make us all proud, great granddad Paw Paw who is watching over you, Martha, Franny and Sharkey, Uncle Carlos and everyone else who knows and loves you. You won't always win. It takes a little time to get to become a team with your handler, but once the two of you have it down, watch out world, here comes my son, GK.
    Love you,
    Your proud father Maddox

  • GK .....you are so handsome!!! I know you will win your dog show!! I have every confidence in you!!! I missed seeing you on Marthas show along with Frannie and Sharky!! Good Luck!!

  • Hello Ladies & G.K.,
I have to make this quick today due to Mom's craft show. We have the In Circle party last night. I don't like this one bit because I am locked in the bedroom upstairs. Mom says to cool my jets because it is helping with my doctor bills, so I guess today and tomorrow will be alright. Now, on to this dog show stuff. If this is what you want G.K., alright then, but I find it hard to believe a boy who stay on his own property will be able to be controlled. Just my opinion, maybe you will settle down. What do you have to say Maddox, were you a wild child like the boy?
Have a great weekend and keep good thoughts about this craft being successful and being over quickly.
    Love & licks,
    Basil

  • Hello ladies, Kirby here.
Now we all know where GK has been keeping himself. I’ll bet you will gain weight with all those treats you are getting. You said, “The judging is based on weight, coloring, grooming, personality, and behavior.” Well you have described me to a ‘T.’ I only weigh 55 pounds, have a wonderful coloring on my coat, get groomed, have a really good and funny personality, and behave myself. Daddy said that I should reconsider that last one. I do behave myself most of the time regardless what he says. What do Daddy’s know anyway? Answer: EVERYTHING!!! Have a good weekend all.
    Catch you later, Kirby.

  • My my my.... GK, following in your father's foot steps is a BIG challenge. I know you can do it, you have that look in your eyes. I remember the first time I looked into your father's eyes... ahhh it was LOVE at first sight. I was your father's first and I'd like to think ONLY frenchie love. You too will have to fall in love with a french girl, perhaps my lovely daughter Tillie. I am sure the two of you will be roomies sooner or later. The best of luck to you GK. I see many ribbons and group placements in your future!!! ****Love your future mother-in-law VEGAS

  • GK

Welcome to the dog show world. You will have a ball. We might see each other at a show. I'm a Lhasa Apso and also in the Non-Sporting Group with Chows and Frenchies. I didn't start shows until I was almost 2 and in my third show I received my first points and a major. Just have fun and go with the flow. You already have the looks.

Good Luck and hope to see you in the ring.

    Sir Kirby

  • Ohhh you fluff-muffin G.K.! you will certainly do well in a show...wish I could see that, maybe on TV...yes?
Did I ever tell you we had a Chow in Germany? it was given to us by a G.I. because he was returning to America after the war...we could not keep him and I don't remember who he went to, although I have a photo of one of my aunts with a chow...I wanted to keep him because he has a blue tongue.

G.K. pretend like I have my face buried in your fluffy head smooching you! ;)

  • Hi there big guy, Jan here, just wanted to tell you how good you looked and how much you remind me of your father Maddox, you have his eyes and some of his mannerisms. Except for sitting down you did awesome for you first training session and the sitting down part is just minor. We can work that out. I am so thrilled and looking forward to showing you. Until I see you again, your handler Jan.

  • Hi Ghenghis Khan, WOW! OMG! YIPPY! It is not only great to see you in this blog post, but to hear about you being trained for a Dog Show later this month is FANTASTIC! I've always thought that you are very handsome and intelligent and it should be really fun for you to follow in the footsteps of father Maddox and great granddad Paw Paw who did well in Dog Shows!!! Sure would love to see you and trainer Jan Kolnik at Westminster Dog Show in Febraury 2012! You have about four months to get ready and I'm sure you can do it! Congratulations Maddox for being such a great father and supporter of your handsome, intelligent young son, Ghenghis Khan! The comments from both of you today were very special! Hope everyone has a wonderful weekend! Love, Dudley Do Right XOXOXO+

  • Hi GK,
What a pleasure it was to see you this week. You looked great and so well socialized. Martha did a fantastic job with you. And you did the training like you wete doing it for a long time. Maddox is right, you are a natural. I told Maddox when I left that morning to go to visit you that he was in charge here at the house and I told him where I was going and why and he looked like he smiled. It was funny.
Basil, Maddox has a swollen head right now because of GK, and he forgot to tell you that he hopes your mom has a very successful show and you will be left out of the bedroom soon.
As for showing, some dogs like to chew toilet paper, dear sweet Zoe who makes me laugh all the time thinking about her, some like to help in the garden, some like to chase critters all over like Cora Bell, and some like to show. Maddox loved it and the way the first training session went with GK, he is a born natural. If it is not fun for a dog, then there is no sense in doing it. So, that will be GK's call, but judging from his performance this week, I think he will like it.
I don't post on The Daily Wag too often but AI just wanted to say I think it is great the way you guys really care about each other and I love to read about the adventures you get in to.
GK, what else can I say except that I can see you are a happy chow who is loved by more people that you will ever know.
    Love Always,
    Karen

  • Congratulations GK! You look wonderful in your training session around the farm. You look like an absolute natural going through the paces with Karen and Jan. Do you attend conformation classes as well. Now I know what MommyM meant when she said that you needed to start showing since you've out on the prowl lately. I bet you will be a Champion in no time. Maddox you must be so proud.

Franny and Sharkey, what do you think about all of this? What's it going to be like living with your baby brother future Champion Chow? Everyone have a terrific weekend.

  • GK, you are already a winner in my book!..WE Australian cattledogs salute you! Why? Because most of us are too rough and tumble to even think of training for dog shows! ..I am worn out today, think my age (15) is creeping up on me..So Lucinda and I are going to lounge around the house..my pal, Kit Bang (the cat) is 15 also and she was sick to her tummy this a.m., so we old girls bid you all a good week-end..later, cora-belle

  • Hello GK, my name is Russia. I looked at your pictures and have been reading all the posts on your soon to be new career. You may find yourself over the next couple of weeks lying in bed at night wondering what have I gotten myself into. I think I can answer that question for you.

I have had the pleasure of being shown by the lovely Jan Kolnik. The first time she met me it was at a show and I was very nervous, so nervous my eyes turned red. Jan wanted to see if I would be comfortable with her in the ring so she walked away with me and left my mommy standing there. I was shaking and unsure of what was in store for me. Later that day I entered the ring, still confused and bewildered, then this gentle hand was placed upon my head and gently stroked down my back and whispered in my ear everything would be okay and I was a good girl. At that moment I knew my mommy had placed me in the right hands.

Later that year my mom decided to let me go off with Jan to Camp Kolnik. Camp Kolnik is when you stay with Jan and travel with her to shows. Oh what fun it is. She let me sleep with her, she fed me steak, I got to go for walks and got belly messages. Oh my, I was in heaven. We went for daily car rides to the show site, she even gave me lots of treats while I was at the show. She put me on a table and dolled me up for the ring. I fell in love with her. She is my favorite handler. So GK, don't worry you will be put on a pedestal and will be pampered at Camp Kolnik. I look forward to meeting you some day.

  • GK, You're a natural!

  • Hello GK,
I am a very very big fan of your father, Maddox. By looking at the pictures you posted, I see some of him in you. You look like you enjoyed yourself with your Showring Etiquette class. I hope you enjoy it as much as your dad does.

  • WOW WOW WOW
I just noticed that my name is in blue print in the initial comment from you GK. So, I just clicked on my name and it went right to my new website that a good friend of mine, Stephen Carlson, had done by some great people. How awesome is that. Martha is on the website as well with some of my chow puppies. You are in it too, when you were little. We will have to add some fresh pictures of you. Martha has her own section at the bottom left side of the home page. Thank you very much GK. What a thoughtful boy you are.
    Love,
    Karen

  • Hi Karen Tracey, WOW is right! Not only do I love The Daily Wag blog, but seeing your website is outstanding! Thank you so much for sharing this information with us! I added your website to my favorites so I can view it forever! You are an excellent Chow Chow lover just like Martha is-I love them all! Ghenghis Khan is very much like Maddox and Paw Paw!!! Thanks again for all you do and have a great weekend! Jan

  • GK....You are so fortunate to have Jan as a handler. She has magic hands, so just follow her lead. I know daddy Maddox is soooo proud of you. We are all excited to follow your show career. I know you will do just fine. Jan bred me and I attended her boot camp. I had a successful show career and I know you will to. You are a beautiful boy and you have many great qualities from your daddy. I have never met your mommy, but I am sure she is awesome also. Keep your chin high and enjoy your time in the ring.
