Further Steps to Becoming a Champion

Posted by Ghenghis Khan

You may recall last week when Karen Tracy and Jan Kolnik came to the farm to begin my training for an upcoming dog show in Leesburg, Virginia.  My father, Maddox, who is owned by Karen, is a seasoned champion, and both she and Jan think that I have excellent potential, as well.  Yesterday, they both returned to the farm to continue my training, but this time, they had a little surprise for me by the name of Trinity.

Hi Karen! It's so nice to see you and Jan again, but I'm especially excited to see my cousin, Trinity! She's very good looking.

Hi, cousin, G.K! I'm here to help you train for your big debut! I may be younger that you are, but I'm already a show dog! So, pay attention!

But I went over everything with Jan and Karen last week and it all seems so basic. What else do I need to know?

See, Jan? I haven't forgotten a thing. In fact, I've got this in the bag! As you can see, I'm very good at walking.

G.K., it's easy when it's just you running around the yard at home, but at the show there will be other dogs in front of you and behind you, too. I'm here to make sure you can stay focused!

Trinity, is it really necessary to follow so closely behind? I feel a little uncomfortable.

Yes, it is, G.K! But like I said, don't pay any attention to me at all. Stay focused! The judges will be watching you very closely.

And because we're so good, we both get treats! You're doing a great job, my cousin. This show dog thing must run in the family!

  • Wow, it Chow Chowapalooza going on at the farm! Your cousin Trinity is very pretty. What a treat it must have been to have her help guide in show dog training. Do you think Daddy Maddox might make a surprise visit as well? Franny, I seem to remember that both you and Sharkey also come from Champion Show Dog lineage as well.

Also, don't you think that with all the responsibility that you and Sharkey have helping MommyM manage the farm that you wouldn't have time to be beautiful show dogs?

  • Hi son,
I knew mom and Jan were going to visit you again and that Trinity was going along to help you. I wanted to be the one to help you. That would have been great, but I left to go back down to Gerry and Dick Roberts in Maryland, the people that co own me with my mom so I couldn't. But, I hope to see you one day soon. Don't get a swelled head, but mom sent me a text and said you did very well, she was really impressed with you. She said you did better than Trinity cause she is a busy little thing and she was interested in Sarah's camera and thought that Laura, Nartha's sister, had treats so she kept trying to jump up on her. Goofy Trinity.... Hey, I saw in the one picture that you gave Trinity a smooch. That is part of the training too. Kissing girls. hehehehehe
I am very proud of you son and I jope you like showing. It can be a lot of fun. If you need any advice or have any questions about it, I am only a phone call, an email or a text away.
    Love you so much,
    Maddox

  • Good Morning F, S & G.K.

Looks like Chowland at the farm. Hey Maddox why don't you go show G.K. how it's done! Before you know it G.K. will be traveling all over gathering ribbons.

I don't think I'm show dog material. First of all when I get excited and meet someone for the first time I pee - I just can't help it I get so happy. Maybe I should invest in Depends I see those on TV for the old people. Second, I like to cause trouble and if I was in the show and some other dog looked at me with some attitude I'd have to attack. Oh and the last thing I want to do is walk really close to another Frenchie's butt because I know that there is going to be gas passing through that little stub of a tail at any moment. We are famous for gas and snoring. When I run up the steps at night for bed and mom is behind me she yells at me because I get the walking farts :) So I think I'll just hang out with my humans.

  • Good morning F, S, & GK

Such beautiful dogs you both are. I'm sure Maddox is a looker, too!
When I came to Mimi & Papa, I knew my name and the command "stop". Now they are teaching some manners and tricks. I feel very important now 'cause someone cares what I do. Problem is, I get so excited for my treat (Papa gives me Cherrios)that I go through all my tricks before commands. I guess I need to slow down and listen better. 1st I sit, then I lay down & then I give Papa a high five.
Hey Zoe, I think you'd fit into our house, 'specially that walking fart thing...ha,ha,ha
    Later everyone......Rebel

  • Hello Ladies & G.K.,
I think this arrangement is perfect--G.K. can run off that nervous energy at the dog shows and you two can be in charge at home, and the occasional trip to the office. Trinity is a very nice cousin to come and help you. Zoe you are right about the gas thing, Frenchies are known for the gas, but then you add Crohn's Disease in like I have and I am now known as the stink bomb. It gives everyone a chance to invest in really nice candles. I am catching up on my rest after being stressed from the craft show. Mom has been a lunch lady fool meeting with friends she couldn't see as she was soooo busy. Have a great Wednesday all.
    Love & licks,
    Basil

  • Hi G.K.,

Wanted to tell you that you look like a shoo-in as a show dog. I know your dad and mom (your mom, Eden, is my sister) and you are bound to follow in their footsteps. My human parents don't think I could be a show dog because I'm too nosy and I don't like it when anyone is too close to my rear. But frankly, I like being a companion dog...no pressure and lots of treats!! You have great trainers and we are looking forward to seeing you at Westminster in the near future to carry on the family name. We'll be rooting for you.

    Love, Aunt Winnie

  • Hello ladies, Kirby here.
OK GK you are doing just fine in your training sessions. I don’t think I could get used to another dog being that close to me when I can’t see them. I guess I would have to let my ears keep track of them. That’s what I do when we are out walking and another dog is around. I find out where they are and then I don’t look at them again. If the dog is barking, my not looking at them really makes them unhappy. I use my ears to keep track of where they are so I know how close to me they are. Daddy says that I am passive aggressive, what ever that means. GOOD Birthday yesterday; where do I sign up for retirement?
    Catch you later, Kirby.

  • Hello again GK,
I was very impressed with you yesterday. Francesca was comical, as she usually is. I met Sarah before and I am pretty sure I have talked to Laura on the phone before, but it was very nice to meet her in person. Well little buddy, relax the rest of this week cause next week you will be busy packing your suitcase with your treats, food, pictures of Martha, Franny and Sharkey so you won't miss them so much, any of your favorite toys, and anything else that you want to take along for your first trip to the dog show. Trinity will be your traveling companion so the two of you should have fun.
    Again, good job yesterday.
    Love ya,
    Karen

  • Hi GK,
I was born at Karen's 10 years ago, and I've been living in Michigan for 7 years now. I did the show thing when I was young, but I didn't like it much. You seem to be well suited for the show. You're going to do great. Good luck, and keep us all posted on your progress.

  • Good morning GK,
I heard you did very well again yesterday. Good job.
You look so handsome on the pictures. Karen told me that Martha speaks to you in Chinese so I think that both she and Jan will have to learn more Chinese words besides wonton soup, chop suey and moo goo gai pan.
    Love as always,
    Mammy Jean

  • Gorgeous Chows, you and Trinity...I'm sure you will do well in the shows G.K.. Love the full face photo and the two of you nose to nose kisses.
My back is still out so have to get off the computer and lay down, till tomorrow well wishes to all fur-friends and their owners here.

  • Hi Girl Friends &G.K., WOW! Once again I love seeing your wonderful photos and comments about your training for your first dog show that is coming up real soon, Ghenghis Khan! • GK,
Trinity here. I know that you did not know I was going to be visiting you yesterday but none the less, I want you to know that I had a great time. It was fun working with you. The best part was the treats. They were delicious. Thank you for sharing them with me. You were a true gentleman. OK, now I have to go see what is going on in the house. I like to keep an eye on things. I am like a detective, alwasy checking things out.
    See you next week.

  • Hi GK
Just want to let you know you did a great job yesterday. I can see you are a well rounded boy that had great social skills. You are going to have so much fun next weekend. Maybe your daddy can see you off for your first weekend away!! Keep up the great work!!
    Jan

  • GK, I hope you enjoy your dog show experience. My NewMom just went to 4 National Specialties with FirstMom. She got to see Shar Peis, Pugs, Dobies, and most importantly FRENCHIES all strutting their stuff. Maybe someday they will see you at the Chow show! When I was very young, before I had my babies, I went in the ring at some dog shows and won some points-- not as many as you have to get to be called a champion, but that wasn't the life for me. Show dogs or not, though, I think all my babies are champions!
