Finding Signs of Autumn in the Woodland

Posted by F&S

Despite the continued rain, signs of autumn are beginning to show.  Fall mushrooms are sprouting all around and the leaves are beginning to fall from the trees.  Now, if it would just stop raining.  Enough’s enough!

The sunlight, trickling in through the trees, the bright colored leaves on the ground—what a beautiful autumn day in the forest, Sharkey!

It sure is, Franny! Let's go on a nature walk and see if we can find anything interesting!

There are so many new smells when the seasons change, Franny. And look, I think I spotted some more puffballs!

These aren't giant puffballs, they're just ordinary little ones. Their spores puff out of them when something causes the outer covering to break open, but I don't think they're ready to puff just yet.

Sharkey! Come and see this cluster of mushrooms growing in the woodland!

These mushrooms are called sulphur tufts and they grow in clusters on hardwood or conifer logs or stumps and sometimes in grass from buried wood during autumn months. There must be a log buried here.

Francesca, the mushroom field guide states that the Sulphur Tuft is bitter and poisonous and that consuming it can cause vomiting, diarrhea, and even convulsions. Look, but do not taste!

I don't see anymore mushrooms, but that pile of leaves looks like it needs to be played in!

Don't you love the way fall leaves crunch underneath your paws, Sharkey? Wait a minute, look over there! I spy...

  • Good Morning F & S

I hear ya about the rain - ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!!! Yesterday the sun was out in the morning and the next thing you know the skies opened up and it came down in buckets with hail then by late afternoon the sun was back out. This person they call Mother Nature is sure confused.

So I see you have those wild turkeys too. They are one ugly bird and they poop all over the place. They have the nerve to come up on our deck if us dogs are in the house and they make such a mess. Dad has to go squirt the poop off the furniture and railings it's just gross. I love when Dad opens the door and we all bolt out there trying to catch the ugly things, one day I'll get one ;)

Dad loved his new slippers and he had a nice birthday dinner with Mom, they went to The Palm in Philadelphia he got a big lobster. I was given orders not to chew the slippers I hope I can control myself.

    Have a great weekend everyone!!

    Zoe

  • Hello Ladies,
Where oh where is that G.K. these days? You girls sure have learned your stuff about mushrooms from Mama Martha. The leaves at your place sure do look fun. Zoe, we haven't been getting any rain, send some our way. Glad your Dad had a great birthday. The king of this castle, me, is celebrating my 10th b-day on Monday. Aren't I glad I didn't answer when St.Peter came knocking?

Well, Mom is in warp speed for her work and Dad and my people brother are getting firewood for our hopefully snowy winter this weekend---4 cords. That will last a few years.

Everyone, have a great weekend. I am going to try to keep this bunch here in line. It is a hard job, but someone has to do it.

    Love & licks,
    Basil

  • Hello ladies, Kirby here.
In the first few pictures it looks as if Sharkey has a shadow. You two make the farm seem like so much fun. That’s what I like about being a pet; everything can be fun. That’s just part of being a ‘good’ pet. Now as for cats, I don’t see how they can be any fun unless their being chased. Basil you keep away from that St. Peter guy; you have many more years with us. Have a good weekend all.
    Catch you later, Kirby.

  • Morning ladies,
Looks like you had a great walk. I love the leaves, too. They a fun to run through and when I sit in the sun, they fall on my head!
Hey Basil, Kirby is right, you stay far away from that St. Peter fella! Zoe, you stay away from your Dad's new slippers, I know about that one.
Today is my Mimi's birthday, I'm trying to be really good today. It's sunny, dry and cool here & I'm set to run & play.
    Have a good weekend all,
    Rebel

  • I love seeing you two out running around playing on the farm. I know you must shower MommyM with hugs and kisses for being such a good Mom. I do miss GK as well. I bet with those new smells on the farm it would be hard to contain him.
