Why do Cats Sleep so Much?

Posted by Francesca

Sharkey and I always wonder why cats sleep so much.  Do you know it’s estimated that felines will sleep two-thirds of their lives away?  That seems like such a waste of time!  Now dogs, on the other hand, are much more active and lead far more interesting lives.  And we, dogs, only sleep, on average, for half of our lives.  Yawn!

It's been thirty minutes since I last slept...time for a nap! Those silly Frenchies think cats sleep too much but we need to sleep 12-16 hours a day.

Cats conserve energy by sleeping. We are natural hunters and need to retain that energy to be able to sprint and pounce on our prey.

I need to find some higher ground. Cats like to sleep high up so they can maintain a good vantage point of their surroundings. Where is everyone else sleeping?

Vivaldi looks to have found a cozy spot on that couch.

Hmmm...this might be suitable for Vivaldi, but I think I need to find something a little bit more...private. Luckily, I'm not disturbing Vivaldi from his catnap.

The word catnap came from our ability to fall asleep easily and still be alert. Oh, is that Princess Peony? Maybe she can help me!

Well, Bartok, I often sneak outside and sleep in the shade so I can keep a lookout in the yard.

Thanks, Princess Peony, but it's a little too humid out for me. Considering that we cats don't sweat like humans and other animals do to cool themselves, I think I'll stay inside.

Verdi found a cozy couch to settle on in the living room. There's another couch in here for me!

But, I think I'd rather find a cozy spot so I can sleep until dusk...I'm not nocturnal, like many think. I'm actually crepuscular, meaning I am awake at dawn and dusk. That's prime hunting time.

There we go, a nice chair for me to snuggle in. Now to drift off and save all of this energy for playing, hunting, and chasing!

Cats, bah! Such lazy animals! We Frenchies only sleep about 10-12 hours a day! And on beds, like civilized animals!

  • Good Morning F & S

Those cats sure do sleep a lot But I must say there is nothing better than an afternoon nap.

I prefer to sleep on top of the back sofa cushion. Mom gets really mad because she said I'll damage the cushions so when she finds me there I get pushed down :( Then I'll go scratch and push the pillows on the sofa until I can snuggle down and get comfy.

The big dogs all prefer their beds. Mom has fancy beds in the family room that match our furniture and beds in her bedroom. I prefer to sleep at night in bed with mom and I'll let Precious up with us but that's it. I rule the bed and if T-Bone or Sophie try to jump up it's an all out brawl.

Good news I think the rain is gone. We had a nice day Saturday but then yesterday it rained on and off all day. Our yard is soaked and mom's vegetable garden looks pretty sad.

Well speaking of naps I think I'll go take one ;)

  • Hello Ladies,
Those silly cats sure do sleep a lot. I, myself do enjoy a rest after meals and after most everything else, but that is just me. I am happiest when Dad comes home from work. Play time is on. Cats are more concerned about themselves than others. I love my bed and Mom and Dad's at night. Speaking of beds, mine looks really good right now. Have a great Monday. I still haven't gotten much rain or cool.
    Love & licks,
    Basil

  • You girls don't fool me. You act like you don't like the cats but you take a lot of pictures of them. I think deep down you care about them but you just don't want them to know that.
Say Cora-Bell, how did the nail thing go with Quigley? Glad to see you are back Rocky. Baby Favor, you would make a good shredder, better than a machine.
There was a real loud crack during the storm last night, real near the house, and mom lost the power. But, she has a portable generator so she was able to put fans in the rooms for the dogs that have lung damage from the fire to help to keep them cool. Today the sun is shining bright. Let's hope it stays that way.
    Enjoy the day.

  • Hello ladies, Kirby here.
OHIM which means that I’ll be alone most of the day while Mommy and Daddy are away. I hope they get the trailer fixed real soon so that they will be staying home more. I am like the cats, I like to nap a lot. It saves my energy too; yeah, that’s it. I’ll nap next to the front door most of the morning and then head to the downstairs where it’s cooler in the afternoon.
    Catch you later, Kirby.

PS: OHIM stands for Oh Heck It’s Monday.

  • Hi Francesca...
It was nice petting you at the farmer's market yesterday...sooo cute! Sorry I didn't recognize your owner until you walked away.
Hopefully you'll be back in ME during our cranberry harvest and come and see us!

  • I had to laugh reading this post and seeing the towels, looks like our house, although Kitty is only allowed on a couple of pieces...She sleeps in the day time unless she sees chippies to hunt, then night-time she scours the woods for rodents, sometimes bringing them home as a prize.

Love the photos, especially of Vivaldi on the couch tucked away in the cozy spot...and Francesca, I love your shot as well!

  • Hi Girl Friends &G.K., You know, you have the nicest, most beautiful kitties living with you there at Martha's beautiful Bedford farm. These photos are so precious and I do love kitties, also. My best friend Bogie moved away awhile ago and I sure miss him. The only kitty around here now lives in my Uncle's room and she is very shy and I need to wait patiently to become her friend. It finally was like summer here this past weekend. It was 85 on Saturday and 87 on Sunday-the hottest it's been since August 17, 2010. This morning, it's much cooler, cloudy, and rain might come today. Hope all of you have a great day today. Love, Dudley Do Right XOXOXO+

  • Hi fellow dogs..Rototiller runs around like crazy..but being an old cattle dog, I like several snoozes a day..except yesterday I thought I was a puppy....campers at the far end of our property so we had to check them out to see if they were friend or foe. Thanks for asking, the Quigster toes are all trimmed..Must check the river bank for naughty otters then take a snooze..Basil, Zoe, Maddox, Rebel, Dudley,Kirby and everyone I missed I'll give the otters a bark for you! over and out..

  • After viewing Martha's post, we took a cat group meeting on the bed of our head servant, who goes by the name of Mom. After careful discussion and a few well placed swats to DJ, who doesn't understand boundaries, we all decided that the reason we sleep so much is....BECAUSE WE CAN! It is our intrinsic right. We have servants who do our bidding and clearly enjoy being allowed to serve us. Actually watching Mom work so hard to keep us happy is, frankly, tiring. Though she may grumble a bit when one of us hacks up a hairball on the freshly laundered quilt or uses the "insanely expensive" (her words, not ours) oriental rug to file our claws, we know that the work is stimulating and worthy of her. Last night, Mom asked us why we can't all get jobs. Silly Mom--cats don't have pockets to keep money in. Besides, we have not heard of any jobs where sleeping 20 hours a day is a requirement. We all were once strays before enslaving, er, finding Mom...so we think our naps are well deserved. Okay, time for a nap.
