Vivaldi Loves His Catnip

Posted by F&S

We, Frenchies, were outdoors the other day, when a very strong and sweet aroma filled the air.  We saw some commotion down by the long pergola and we went to check things out.

Sharkey, there's a very aromatic herbal scent in the air. Let's go see where it's coming from.

Why, it's Wilmer cutting the catnip! After harvesting, Martha likes to dry it for use it cat toys. And look! There's Vivaldi right in the midst of it all!

Crazy cat! He looks so euphoric!

Catnip, or Nepeta, seems to affect many cats in strange ways. Some stretch out really long. Others shake their heads, or stare, or even salivate. Some cats even run and leap through the air!

Franny, that sounds like a lot of fun. Do you think it could have the same effect on us?

Look how Vivaldi is just staring into nothingness.

Hey, Franny! I'm beginning to feel a little tipsy!

This is fun! No wonder Vivaldi likes it so much.

Silly Frenchies! It's the chemical, nepetalactone, found in the plant's leaves that causes the feline elation. It does not affect dogs, so dream on!!!

  • Hi everyone,
Yes Basil, I am in Maryland right now. How are you doing my little friend? I could not post a comment yesterday cause the contractor was here to replace some windows and wouldn't you know, they were in the room where "my" computer is. I missed everyone so much. Francesca and Sharkey, you look like you are having a ball rolling around in the catnip. Maybe Vivaldi will give you each a kiss cause you smell like catnip. Better stay out of that stuff or get ready to get a big smooch. hehehehe
    Love ya,
    Maddox
I gope everyone is doing well.

  • Good Morning F & S

Vivaldi looks like he has a good buzz sitting in the catnip patch. I think you girls should do some research and see if there is a plant that would have the same effect on us dogs. I'm not sure if I would like just sitting and looking into space I'd prefer running around like a crazy frenchie ;)

So I must tell you about the storm we had last night. I've never seen anything like it - we had hail balls the size of a quarter crashing down on us!! Mom took pictures our deck was covered in ice. The pool looked like someone was throwing rocks in it the water was splashing all over the place. The wind was blowing so hard we have tree limbs and leaves all over the place the yard is a total mess. Then we lost power for 5 hours!!!! Mom said her garden was hit pretty hard, lots of tomatoes on the ground she is not happy. I was very scared, I never left mom's side.

F & S doesn't your mama have a birthday coming up are you doing anything special for her?

  • Hello ladies, Kirby here.
At first I thought of saying, “I don’t know what you are on but it must be good stuff,” but I do know what catnip is. It has no effect on me at all. Maybe it’s because I’m a dog; silly me. You see, I don’t need anything to make me act silly. That comes naturally to me. I guess I take that from my Mommy. She is really funny at times. I guess that all mommies are that way. Well it’s back to work on the trailer again today. Insurance looked at it and will pay to have it fixed. Careful there “boy,” I really don’t like that (fixed) word.
    Catch you later, Kirby.

  • You tell them Vivaldi! this pleasure is for feline's only ;)
Kitty looooves catnip, eating it and rolling in it with the loudest puuurrr you ever heard, maybe I should grow some too!
    =^..^=

  • Hello Ladies,
Cats shouldn't be the only ones to have a catnipy time. Amongst all your talents, you should figure out how to market it--like medical catnip. LOL!!!!I was up 4 times during the night drinking water. Then finally woke Mom at 3:30 because I had to go do my business because of all the water.Today should be cooler, I hope. I hate the heat. Give me a nice cozy fire and snow and I am a happy boy. I am sure glad to have Maddox and Kirby back on board. I am a little nervous, as tomorrow is my one month checkup at the doctor's to see how I am doing and switch meds etc. Mom does not like my weight loss so we will have to see about that. I can take being a thin man, just no "pukefests." I'll keep you posted. Have a nice cool day all.
    Love & licks,
    Basil

  • Hi Girl Friends &G.K., Oh dear, you two girls sure did have fun visiting Vivaldi out there in the catnip patch didn't you?!!! Vivaldi looked so serene out there and he didn't even run away when you arrived! I love it when you sniffed that stuff and thought it affected you-you looked so silly and happy!! Where was G.K.? Bet he would have had fun out there, also! Glad to hear from you again Maddox-hope you continue to have fun in Maryland! Wow, Zoe, that sure was an awful hail storm yesterday! I've never see hail stones that large in my life! Sure hope everyone is doing well and has a great day today! F,S,&GK,be sure to wish your beautiful Martha Happy Birthday tomorrow! What did you make for her this time? Happy days are here again, aren't they?! Love, Dudley Do Right XOXOXO+

  • Hello F & S!
I have never smelled catnip, but I have a favorite weed ( Mimi & Papa can't find it). I wrote about it the other week. I think it smells great, the humans in my house, not so much. I just love to rub the top of my head in it & rub my back in it. I show my tummy to the sun, too! Have fun!
Hi Zoe & Maddox! Zoe, that sounds like a scary storm, I'd be under the bed. Maddox, did the workers pounding bother you? We had some workers at my house, I liked them, but not their hammers...
    Later,
    Rebel

  • Thanks frenchies for the post on cat-nip.. this is first year we planted it for our kitties and we are about to harvest...although the resident feral cats don't care for it..my pal, kit-bang is going nuts.but she is 15 years old and nuts most of the time...we are going to make toys and send them to marmot, the bengal cat, who lives with rototiller the cattle dog..over and out..

  • Good ol' Vilvaldi's all buzzed out again. Reminds me of the Cheshire Cat in "Alice In Wonderland." Hmmm...wonder what dogs would be like on doggie nip?

Good luck with your check up Basil.

  • Dear Frenchies, this is Henry the labradoodle - my owner, Eliad, may have mentioned me to you before. He wanted to let you know that you are very silly, and when will you finally learn that you can't get 'high' from that stuff! He also wanted to ask if he you had any plans to blog about that special chair you recieved?
    Love,
    Henry

  • Gee, you two are just crazy pups! Cat nip indeed, more like Frenchie Nip! BOL

    woos, Tessa
