Hunting For Wild Mushrooms in Maine

Posted by Sharkey

When we were last in Maine, I took these photos, but misplaced my camera.  Good thing that Martha found it and packed it with her things to take back to Bedford.  So, here’s another blog from Maine – better late than never!

Hey Francesca, why just read about them?

After all, we are in Maine, you know.

And, the cool, damp weather we're having is conducive for mushroom hunting.

Let's do it then, Sharkey! Hey, G.K. Do you want to come along? You can't sleep all day, you know!

Yes, girls! I am quite eager to join you and you can rely on my excellent nose for the hunt!

Why don't I take pictures with my Canon G12 camera so we can show Ryan our finds and post the photos on our blog?

Let the hunt begin! Let's start sniffing!

Hmmm, I'm not picking up a trace of fungi around here.

Girls, maybe we should venture out into the woods.

With all this fog, the woods look a little eerie, but I think we'll have more mushroom luck in here.

That book Ryan had said that mushrooms like to grow in cool, damp places. How about we search in this drainage area?

Well look at that! This is a fine specimen of a Bracket fungi, which are mostly found on trees, living or dead! Mushrooms are a type of fungi, as well, so I have a very good feeling about this!

EUREKA! A crop of toadstools right near the bracket fungi! Good idea to venture into the woods!

This one looks like it's dancing! Just look and do not touch! That book said that many mushrooms can be mind altering or deadly! We don't need that! Let's settle for a photo.

  • Hello Ladies & G.K.,
I'm back!!! Hooray!! I missed all of you but enjoyed catching up on things. The fashion show was mighty fine ladies. Now for this mushroom hunting. You all are quite advanced. That Ryan must be a great teacher. Is Shaun gone and Ryan is the new Shaun? Mom and Dad had a great time on their little get a way for their 35th anniversary. I am really glad they are back though. I missed them lots. Hope everyone is keeping cool.
    Love & licks,
    Basil

  • Hi Girl Friends &G.K., Oh how I missed you yesterday! So glad you finally found these wonderful photos so you could finally post another fabulous blog today! It's easy to tell that all three of you really had fun at Skylands with the gardener who works there, Ryan Mc Callister. I know how much you love seeing your Bedford gardner Shaun and how fun it is to once in a while get to see Ryan, too! You all did a fabulous job finding some cool looking mushrooms and I'm glad you didn't touch or eat any of them since it's hard to tell which ones are not poisonous! These photos were superior! So glad you're back!!! Have a great day everyone! Love, Dudley Do Right XOXOXO+

  • Oh what fun! We have mushrooms here in the Pacific NorthWest. But you are correct no touch or lick until you are 100% sure if it is edible!

    woos, Tessa

  • Good Morning F & S

My mom received a box of mushrooms yesterday from her family in Oregon. They did the hunting out in the woods and shipped us Morels, Coral and King Boletus. Mom is going to make wild mushroom soup, boy was she a happy camper opening that box. Who would think mushrooms could put such a big smile on her face. Now if it were a box of dog treats I could understand.

Today I'm going to show off my good looks. I'm going to my nephew's school for a dog show. I think I'll wear my new Phillies shirt and dazzle the crowd. Mom's happy it's outdoors because when I get really excited sometimes I pee. I know - that can be my trick - pet me and I'll pee :)

  • Oh I forgot - WELCOME BACK BASIL :)

  • Oh Happy Day. I was worried about you girls and GK. I didn't see new posts for a couple days and I gotta tell you, I wondered if everyone was alright. I am glad Martha had your camera and everything is back to normal. Great mushroom pictures.
Hey Basil, tell your parents congrats on their anniversary from me. Kool.. Now where the heck is Zoe? Rocky? Rebel? I hope they are all alright.
Well, I think I did enough worrying and thinking for one day. It is a BEE U TEA FULL day today so I am going to spend the day outdoors. Enjoy.

  • Hello ladies, Kirby here.
I’m a little late with this message, but who is counting? I just love going into the woods and finding strange things. I don’t have any woods around here where I live now. When we travel, Daddy always finds some woods for us to explore. I have some news for you; Chow Chows can sleep all day. I slept about 23 hours yesterday. I have some “hot spots” and they are not doing so well. I have to take some medicine and that makes me sleepy. I’ll be glad when this is over and things will get back to normal.
    Catch you later, Kirby.

  • Boy, does mushroom hunting look like fun! My Mimi says that once she & Papa owned a log house in the woods and had morel mushrooms. That was way b/4 my time with them.
Welcome back Basil. My folks tell me they are going to the Smokies next week & I'm going to sleep over at my vets. I wonder if the Smokies smell like little hot dogs? It's storming this morning. Mimi is taking me to work. I like going to work, it takes my mind off the "boomers".
    Have a great day everybody,
    your pal.....Rebe

  • Oh shoot, I was hoping you found some Morels! we have a lot of them growing in the woods, people will not disclose where and guard the secret...I saw them in the woods that I use to ride in and marked the trees near the spot, so it would be easier to find...although I have not been able to do it this year.
Lovely woods you guys get to stomp in!

  • Hello F, S, & GK good to have you back. Photo #1 looks like you're plotting something with Ryan Franny and photo #5 reminds me of the Rat Pack with Sinatra, Sammy, and Dean getting down to business for some reason.

Basil, glad to have you back and feeling better. Kirby Bear, get some rest so you can feel better. Zoe, have fun I just know you will steal the doggie show. Everyone else have a great day!
