Yo Mama!

Posted by Pia

Being a mom doesn't mean you have to be the same species as your "kids!" So here's a huge "Happy Mother's Day" to those of you who are the loving mothers of fur children (or those with feathers, scales, etc). You deserve to be celebrated, applauded, wagged at, sat on, purred to and licked this Sunday!

Becoming a mother makes you the mother of all children. From now on each wounded, abandoned, frightened child is yours. You live in the suffering mothers of every race and creed and weep with them. And on your special day, know that the partially chewed favorite shoe, gooey fur ball, or lick on the face is offered with as much love and appreciation as any gift a human child might give you. In fact, if fur children could make you some personalized macaroni art or a Shrinky Dink in your likeness, I'm certain they would!

And speaking of children, they make great mothers to furry four-leggers as well. In fact, it is often for a companion animal that many kids experience their first maternal feelings. So be sure to recognize those around you this weekend, child and adult alike, who are the nurturing providers to our fellow creatures.

While some moms carry a bib or burp towel, others carry a leash and lint brush. Either way, I wish you all a happy day. Keep up the great work, Baby Mama, no matter what kind of baby you mama!

  • Hello Dr. Pia,
Happy Mother's Day to you!!!! Mom and I looked over these photos and they are the best. One I told Mom I thought was you when you were little. It is so wonderful to see the love from Moms to their 4 legged or feathered babies. We sure are lucky--hats off to all the moms on the Daily Wag.

  • This made me smile and moved my heart in the best possible ways. Happy Mothers Day.

  • Dr. Pia

I hope you have a wonderful Mothers Day. My mom is the best mom ever. She has no human children just us 4 dogs oh and those furball feral cats that she considers her kids too. I get a little jealous of the furballs at times but mom worries as much about them as she does us.

Dad is taking me shopping for mom on Saturday. We surprise her with beautiful hanging baskets for the yard, mom loves flowers. I go with dad the Labs have to stay home, he can't manage 4 dogs and flowers at the same time. (he's not like mom she can multi-task)

Can I send you a picture of me with my mom?

    Zoe

  • Hi Dr. Pia, You are a very special person! Anyone being an animal lover like you and Martha sure does make me happy and your animal children are so lucky to have you!! I have been an animal lover all my life and have had 6 darling, charming, sweet baby dogs that have just thrilled me to pieces everyday that I had them. My latest, little Dudley Do Right, is such a loveable fellow and I never have to leave him alone because I'm a retired Mom for him. Never had any human children, but taught many darling children for about 35 years. Happy Mother's Day to you and all Mothers of humans and animals!!! Jan

  • Pia!

That is so great! Thanks so much for the shout out to the critter mama's. Enjoy all of yours and your day too.

  • Hi Pia,

I love the Blog and I am honored to once again be a part of it. In October 2010, we adopted Charlie and he's really made a name for himself in the neighborhood. He's a 9lb ball of terror so we have declared him the Head of Security at our house. Of course, I'm the brains behind all that goes on around here and Gus is my Silent Partner and provides Charlie with some braun. Life is great here in Long Beach, NY!!!

  • Hi Dr. Pia, Happy Mothers Day to you too!

I myself would not be able to enjoy my life if it were not for Tessa. She is my little life line.

    Blu and Tessa too
