Words of Woof

Expressing the unique bond we have with our dogs is not always simple. Over the years people have articulated their love of canines in many eloquent ways. Similarly, people have also captured the uniqueness of this regal species in photos. Since we get such great photo submissions from readers, I thought I'd pair them with some favorite quotes for your reading and viewing pleasure.

1 "The great pleasure of a dog is that you may make a fool of yourself with him, and not only will he not scold you, but he will make a fool of himself, too. --Samuel Butler

2 "The fidelity of a dog is a precious gift demanding no less binding moral responsibilities than the friendship of a human being. The bond with a dog is as lasting as the ties of this earth can ever be." --Konrad Lorenz

3 "If a dog will not come to you after he has looked you in the face, you ought to go home and examine your conscience.” --Woodrow Wilson

4 "One of the greatest gifts we receive from dogs is the tenderness they evoke in us." --Dean Koontz

“I love a dog. He does nothing for political reasons.” --Will Rogers

5 “I love a dog. He does nothing for political reasons.” --Will Rogers

6 "It came to me that every time I lose a dog they take a piece of my heart with them. And every new dog who comes into my life gifts me with a piece of their heart. If I live long enough, all the components of my heart will be dog, and I will become as generous and loving as they are." --Unknown

7 "Our dogs will love and admire the meanest of us, and feed our colossal vanity with their uncritical homage." --Agnes Repplier

8 "It's a wonderful thing to have a companion like that who just wants to sit by you while you work." --Chris Fabry

9 "Dogs laugh, but they laugh with their tails." --Max Eastman

10 "A dog is not 'almost human,' and I know of no greater insult to the canine race than to describe it as such." --John Holmes

11 "One reason a dog can be such a comfort when you're feeling blue is that he doesn't try to find out why. " --Unknown

  • Dr. Pia that post was wonderful. Our dogs give us so much love and when you are having the worst of days one look from those loving eyes makes everything seem better.

  • Hello ladies, Kirby here.
And hello to you too Dr. Pia. Being a dog, I can tell when my Mommy or Daddy aren't feeling good. I just sit quietly beside them and let them know that they are loved. Now there are a lot of things I do for treats, but that isn’t one of them. If you want to be loved, you must first give love. When I was a little pup, this man I now call “Daddy” picked me up and looked into my eyes. I knew right then I must be with him; love at first sight some say. Thanks for the memories Dr. Pia.
    Catch you later, Kirby.

  • Not enough pictures, Pia. I was just getting settled in and loving every minute of it and they came to an end. But THANKS for all you do.

  • Dr. Pia,
This was the greatest blog yet. Mom and I loved it. Mom says you should publish a book with all your collection of photos and your wonderful quotes. This is just what the doctor ordered for us today. Get it, doctor and you're a doctor? LOL!!!

  • Hi Dr. Pia, Thanks again for another outstanding blog post about my favorite animals, DOGS! I love cats, too, but dogs are my favorite! These photos are fantastic and the delightful look in each dog's eyes just makes me love everyone of them and I'd love to hug them all, especially the dog in photo #3! My little Dudley Do Right makes me happy everyday-he follows me everywhere I go wagging his tail and looking so happy just to be with me! Have a super day! Jan
