Old Socks, New Tricks

Posted by Pia

Maybe your dryer has the dog's best interest in mind when it leaves you with just 1 sock from each pair. Here are a couple of dog- and Earth-friendly ways to put those loners to good use!

Here is my little 4-pound Minnow wearing a cute sock I got from the dollar store.

Just cut off the toe and make 2 holes for arms, and voila! You can even keep the toe part as a chapeau...that's hat in French!

Not many pooches are small enough for a sock sweater. Minnow especially likes the ones I make from chenille socks.

Minnow has a headless horseman costume, too. But I digress...

Oh, and a tie for more formal affairs.

Sock Sweater

For little dogs like my Minnow, a generous-sized sock makes a comfy sweater. Just cut off the toe and add holes for the front legs. Larger dogs with an ironic fashion sense could give a leg-warmer a try.

Old Sock Chew Toy

I got the idea for this easy to make, free chew toy from my dog-loving friend Katya Friedman. Use it to change your canine's routine, keep her busy, and let her work hard for her treats!

Materials

  • An old sock -- the longer the better (no hose or thin nylon trouser socks, as these can be dangerous if swallowed)
  • Dog treats

Instructions

  1. Put a treat at the bottom of the sock, then tie a LOOSE knot just above it. (You want your dog to be able to untie it, eventually.)
  2. Put another treat above the knot, and then tie another loose knot.
  3. If you still have fabric to work with, repeat one more time.

Hint: The smellier the treat you use, the more enticed she will be to undo those knots and stay focused on getting her treats. Just remember not to use the socks you’ll need to wear tomorrow!

And as always, supervise your pup and remove any shreds that may pose a hazard if ingested.

Enjoy!

  • Hello ladies, Kirby here.
And hello to you too Dr. Pia. Now that’s a neat trick; don’t let anything go to waste. Last week my Mommy did the unthinkable; at least to me it was. She found a baby squirrel which had fallen out of it’s nest. It must have walked quite a bit and was really tired. It was so young that it’s eyes weren’t open yet. She put it in a cat carrier and tried to feed it. Now you know that I chase the squirrels off of the back porch and her bringing one of them there was unthinkable. She went to the PetSmart store and bought some powdered kitty milk. She fed the squirrel with an eyedropper every two hours, during the day, for three days. After the weekend, she took it of a shelter where it was placed with some other small squirrels. I guess being a mom doesn’t have any boundaries when it comes to babies. That’s why I love my Mommy.
    Catch you later, Kirby.

  • Being a chihuahua, I think that I would like a sock sweater, too! It's chilly here in Illinois today.
    Thanks, Dr. Pia......Hasta luego!

  • Hi Dr. Pia, Sweet little Minnow sure does look darling in those special outfits you make for her with old sox! I have tried and tried to get my little DDR to wear outfits when we go outside in the cold weather, but he hates wearing anything. I guess the reason goes back to when he was neutered and had to wear that horrible plastic concoction around his neck so he wouldn't pull out his stitches. Being part Pomeranian he does get a little more hairy when it gets cold. We do make catnip toys for my brother's kitty using old sox. Thanks again for sharing. Have a great day! Jan

  • What great ideas. Going to try this tomorrow! Thanks

  • Oh Minnow, your so gorgeous in your tie. You sure are gorgeous.

  • Dear Dr. Pia,
Love all your ideas. I am too wide to wear socks, I would have to have 5 to begin to fit me. I know your ideas help many Dr. Pia. Thanks again for all you do.
    Love & licks,
    Basil

  • Ahhhh sweet little Minnow in her fashion socks...what great ideas....I love it! Minnow you are lucky to have your mommie Pia!
