Filling Bird Feeders

Posted by Francesca

After basking in the nice warm springtime sun, Sharkey and I decided to have a look around when we spotted Gyurme busy with chores.  It turns out that he was filling the bird feeders, which hang from the eaves of the carport/blog studio.  We decided to help him because this is a big job, as we have a lot of feeders and a lot of hungry backyard birds.

Hey Sharkey! Let's go and see what Gyurme is doing.

Gyurme - are you filling the bird feeders?

I see you have black oil sunflower seeds in this can. Did you know that this is the most popular seed at feeders? It has a high fat content and a thin shell that is easy for the birds to open.

And this is sunflower seeds without the hulls. It attracts a greater variety of birds than sunflower with the hulls on because it's easier to eat.

And these peanuts are a real favorite of woodpeckers, mockingbirds, woodpeckers, chickadees, titmice, nuthatches, goldfinches, house finches, cardinals, grosbeaks, and jays.

Ahh! Mixed bird seed! It's fun to watch birds tossing the seeds they don't like onto the ground, which actually helps ground-feeding birds like doves, sparrows, quails, blackbirds, wild turkeys, not to mention SQUIRRELS!!!!

Here Gyurme, let me lend a paw.

Wow! Martha sure feeds her backyard birds some pretty fancy looking seed mix! No wonder we have so many birds visiting every day.

Now, how do you hang this feeder way up there?

Oh, I see! You've made a special pole with a hook on the end.

OK, Gyurme - Now that Sharkey and I have helped you out, do you think you can give me a lift onto the squirrel tree?

I'm getting a strong whiff of squirrel.

Yes, I know that there's probably a nest down in this hole.

  • Good Morning F & S
You sure do have lots of bird feeders. We have 3 in our backyard and 1 on the side of our house. I like to help out and sometimes I'll even sample some of the seed that spills over, not bad tasting makes for a nice snack :)

My mom was pure white this morning reading Martha's blog. I see your turkey friends are Thanksgiving dinner this year - did you even get to say goodbye? Please go warn the others to run away it's only a matter of time before they are all golden brown and being displayed in the center of the table. I think my mom is really sick! Now she is having crazy thoughts about not eating meat. This happened several years ago when she watched a show on 60 Minutes about how cattle and chickens were treated she couldn't eat meat for years!!!

Well I better go check on her I'm sure we'll be having a meatless dinner tonight :(

  • It is truly illuminating to realize that Frenchies are avian specialists, in addition to their vast knowledge of botany and internal combustion engines. The depth and breadth of Frenchie knowledge is impressive and wondrous. Bye!

  • Well back to working like Army precision, everything has it's time and place...what good little doggies helping Gyurme!
And yes indeed what wonderful feed for those birds...I think I'll have to tell all those birds here to go to the Stewart houses. Birds don't seem to come here anymore, otherwise they will become Kitty's meal...she already killed a chipmunk on it's first day out of the hole, just can't get the feral out of her. =^..^= :(

  • Hello Ladies,
Franny, you are getting out and about and right in the thick of things. And you are still fragile and needing your rest, so don't overdue. You have lots and lots of bird feeders, so it must take forever to fill them all. We have one squirrel proof feeder and that keeps us busy. Enjoy the day all. We were supposed to get snow, but so far nothing. Mom and I are going to my specialist appointment today. I hate the thermometer thing, but they make up for it with hugs and treats.
    Love & licks,
    Basil

  • Hello ladies, Kirby here.
Good to see you are doing your share of the farm chores Franny. It seems that everyone has been working overtime just to keep up while you were away. Now that things are back to normal, everyone will have a chance to do their favorite things. As you all know, chasing squirrels is my thing in life. I am helping the birds by keeping the squirrels out of their food. I’m helping Mommy by not letting the squirrels mess up the back porch with birdseed. I’m helping myself by getting lots of running; good for my heart they tell me. Oh good, another day of thunderstorms. Will it ever end???
    Catch you later, Kirby.

  • Not to mention the squirrels - right, let's NOT mention the squirrels.... I have looked at my eves a dozen times trying to visualize bird feeders that exclude the varmits without baffels, etc.

  • Hi Girl Friends &G.K., How amazing to see that there is still a little snow there at the farm. I know it's been cold, but didn't think you would get snow now that it is spring. We are getting nothing but wind and rain all week and it's in the 50's. How fun to see you two girls back helping the farm crew like you used to! Guyrme must have enjoyed having you help him fill the birdseed containers and how fun that he let you look for the squirrels to chase again. Spring is so much fun, isn't it?! Have a great day everyone! Love Dudley Do Right XOXOXO+

  • "Back in the saddle again..." I agree with Basil Franny, you need to take it easy so you don't have a relapse and have to go back to Maryland.

I bet those birdies are happy they have Martha's farm to go to for great birdie food. Sharkey you and Franny need to remind your little brother GK that just because Franny's back home doesn't mean he doesn't have to do farm chores anymore.

  • Good day ladies,
My Mom was talking about our filling our bird feeder tomorrow. I'm not feeling too well this afternoon, had a veterinarian appointment for my leptospirosis booster this morning so I've been napping all afternoon. I took a dinner break and am writing to you, then back to bed.
Love your pink coats, too. Soooooo feminine.
    Buenos noches,
    Rebel
