Early Signs of Spring

Posted by Sharkey

I have to admit that when I read Francesca’s blogposting from Maryland, I got a little envious.  She and her Frenchie hosts, CaraMia and AislinCate, are running around outside without sweaters or coats.  Maryland looks kind of warm compared to the farm in Bedford.  I decided to put on my warm coat and head outdoors to find some signs of spring.  I wasn’t disappointed.  Also, I cannot wait for Francesca’s return back home.  I heard something about later this week!  G.K. and I are very hopeful.

Well, this is not good! A pile of snow right off the bat! Good thing it's just a little bit.

But, what do we have here?

The other day, Martha said she was so happy to see snow drops popping up.

And now I understand what she meant! These little white flowers must be what she was talking about. How beautiful and very spring-like!

There's my buddy, Sasa out in the paddock. I should ask him if he's noticed any signs of spring.

Hey there Sasa! Have you noticed anything warmer around here?

Well, hello, my dear Sharkey! I can tell you that the ground under my hooves is thawing! I think that spring is really just around the corner!

Thanks, Sasa! Perhaps Betsy will let you out of the stable without your horse blanket sometime soon. Don't you love the way the sun feels on your bare back?

Now here's a sunny looking bloom. It kind of matches my outfit.

I've heard Martha say that this is witch hazel and it supposed to be in full bloom in late winter or early spring - another good sign!

Did you know that extracts from witch hazel's bark and leaves are used in lotions for treating bruises and insect bites and also in aftershave?

Ah-ha!!! Another sign!

Look at this peony! They're growing now to bloom in late spring.

As usual, Martha's peony garden will be breathtaking! And I can't wait for that!

  • Hey there Sharkey love the jacket.

I'm sure it isn't any fun searching for signs of Spring without your buddy Francesca. I know I always like Precious to come out with me we always find good stuff out in the woods. She always brings mom a present like a rock, piece of wood anything that big old brown Lab can fit in her mouth. Sometimes mom isn't too happy with the present especially if it is really dirty and she brings it in the house.

Mom was out working in her vegetable garden this weekend and finished making the rows last night after work. That sure is hard work, Dad said she should just buy her produce at the farm around the corner but mom loves her garden. I think we are going to plant lettuce and spinach this weekend. I'll have to help mom - I can't wait.

Franny if you are reading this I miss you. I saw Dr. Pia on Martha's show yesterday I was hoping you were going to be up for adoption we would have called in and rescued you right away. We have a very good Vet who could nurse you back to health right in the comfort of your own home. (still don't understand why you were sent away for being sick)

Rocky I hope your mom is doing well.

  • Sharkey, Don't you look like a million in that jacket. Very flattering. It is nice of you to show everyone the flowers that are starting to bloom. Although I love the cold weather, my mom was complaining about all the ice we had this winter so she will be happy to see your pictures also.

  • Loved the pictures Sharkey. They are proof that spring is just around the corner. Can't wait. Hey Maddox, maybe you can hitch a ride with Francesca when she goes back to the farm, they can drop you off on the way. And if you and Francesca get to do lunch, be a gentleman and pick up the tab.

  • Hello ladies, Kirby here.
There is one sign of spring that you didn’t find; if GK is loosing his thick inner fur, spring is not far behind. Mine has started coming out a week ago and being replaced by thinner hair. Hate the feeling of loosing the hair but the brushing is wonderful. Maybe Franny will come home when spring arrives. We all miss her at the Daily Wag. I’ll bet she wants to play with you and GK more everyday. Having friends isn’t as good as being with family. OK, it’s time for my walk; where’s my Daddy?
    Catch you later, Kirby.

  • Hello All,
Sharkey, you are a great springtime investigator. All the blossoms on the farm are looking beautiful--much like you in your springtime jacket. I am afraid without my dear buddy, Tasha, around this winter I have gained some winter weight. I have my check up with the specialist in 2 weeks, and Mom says if I don't want to be put on yucky diet food, that I better shape up--really shape up. Today we are going to garden a bit, so I am planning on sun bathing. That is outside exercise. Does that take the pounds off? Hope everyone is well, and Rocky, that your Mom is still doing well.
    Love & licks,
    Basil

  • Oh Sharkey I can't wait for your beloved sidekick Francesca to come back!

I love the flowers peeking out to announce that Spring is on its way...I know I'm ready, tomorrow it should reach into the 60's, maybe this will make me happier, I'm down because of the daily Japan earthquake coverage, I feel so helpless...not only human lives but animal lives...I can only pray.

  • Hi Girl Friends &G.K., Hey,sweet little Sharkey, you look terrific in that 'witch hazel' colored jacket! Thanks so much for taking us around the beautiful areas near your great house on the farm. The little snowdrop flowers and peonys buds sure do look beautiful and it will be great to see all of the gardens as spring approaches. Sasa sure looks happy now that the ground is thawing under his hooves. I think you and G.K. will be happiest as soon as Francesca comes back home pretty soon!!! Have a great day everyone! Love, Dudley Do Right XOXOXO+

  • Did I tell you how much I love the coat that you're wearing? You and Francesca both look terrific in it. I can enjoy your blog post so much more now that Franny gave us an update on Friday and you mentioned that she might be home later this week. What a happy family reunion that will be.

Sasa looks happy to be out without having to wade through the snow anymore. Bring on the donks for some teasing! Is GK missing his snow to romp in?

Rocky, please give your sweet Mom lots of hugs and licks to make her feel better.
